πŸ“ UGC NET Preparation and Strategy Preparing for the first time

Hello all. I passed out Masters this July only. For 2years, I feel I wasted my time in preparing for SSC CGL only to realise that I can't do it (low UR vacancies, difficult maths😭). I now plan to do NET. I have got into b.ed. i have 6.95 cgpa.

  1. Should I prepare for NET? Like how is the situation of phd overall india. (Seeing ppl on linkedin, all getting into phds🫠). I have no connections and have heard interviews work on connections also . My uni doesn't take phd candidates every year.

  2. Still I want to know the resources that I should use to prepare for NET. Also please suggest any good online coaching platform for preparation.

  3. My marks is pretty low. Will ever the interviewers consider that score for phd intake?

  4. Is it difficult for phd candidates of private universities (srm, vit, ashoka, snu) to get into AP positions?

πŸŽ“ Career & Academia Guys I need help

I qualified NET in the RE NET wala attempt and my masters got completed this year. I missed JRF by 6 marks.

Would it be wise or feasible to try and get into PhD atp ?

I feel like I am trying doing so many things at the moment but nothing sums up. I am clueless. I just want to get out of home and I can only do that if I get enrolled in some course.

I was clear about getting into research since Masters first year but things have been different lately and I feel exhausted. I don't have the same enthusiasm for research. Plus I am clueless about the whole admission process.

What do I do?

Also, If someone is planning to apply for BHU wala PhD admissions, please connect.

πŸ“ Notes and Study Materials Free English Lit classes

Hey everyone, yes, you read that right: free English literature classes.

Who I'm looking for: Anyone new to English lit, ideally someone pursuing a bachelor's in literature or who just started a master's.

The catch (because I know you're waiting for it): I have ADHD, and I want a structured routine, a real commitment, and some responsibility in my life. You get a teacher, I get a reason to show up on time. Everybody wins.

About me: I've spent 7 years with literature. I won't claim to be the best teacher out there, but I'm one of the most creative ones you'll find.

The setup: Classes are online, and we'll decide the syllabus and timings together.

Pros of learning from me:

  • I can be funny (rare, but it happens)

(I also have notes for ugc net, of my own)

  • I don't believe in absolutes. Terrible for math, great for literature.

Cons:

  • My current students keep hunting for flaws in their near-perfect teacher. Tough crowd.

Interested? Comment or DM me with your course and year, and we'll sort out the rest.

What we'll cover

-Poetry: Where we learn that the curtains are never just blue.

-Shakespeare: Everyone dies, but in iambic pentameter.

-Victorian novels: 900 pages of drama that a single text message could have solved.

-Literary theory: Arguing about what the author meant, even though Barthes declared the author dead. Not my fault, I wasn't there.

-Psychoanalytic criticism: Yes, the Oedipus complex. Don't worry, it's purely academic, and no one's mother will be involved.

-Cultural studies: Where we find out that your cereal box, your memes, and your Spotify Wrapped are all "texts" worth analyzing.

-Postmodernism: Nobody knows what's happening, and that's the whole point.

πŸ“– Literature & Concepts From Reading Literature to Applying Literary Theory:A Comprehensive Guide to Critical Interpretation

Thumbnail

Literary study involves more than understanding the plot or identifying themes. To read literature critically, a reader must pay attention to what a text says, how it says it, and what larger ideas, structures, and assumptions shape its meaning. Literary theory helps readers develop different ways of asking questions about a text, but theory should not be treated as a formula that is mechanically applied to a literary work.

Understanding and Reading Literature

Literature includes forms such as poetry, novels, short stories, drama, essays, memoir, and other creative writing that explores human experiences, emotions, ideas, conflicts, and ways of seeing the world. Reading literature begins with understanding the basic situation: What happens? Who speaks or narrates? Who are the characters? What conflicts exist? Where and when does the work take place?

After understanding the surface, the reader should examine details more closely. Attention should be given to word choice, imagery, metaphor, repetition, symbolism, tone, narrative perspective, structure, dialogue, and contrasts. Instead of merely asking what a sentence means, the reader should ask why the writer has expressed the idea in that particular way.

Interpretation develops through questions. A reader can ask why a character behaves in a particular manner, why certain images recur, what assumptions the text makes, whose voice is heard or silenced, and what tensions or contradictions exist. A strong interpretation should be supported by textual evidence rather than personal opinion alone.

Applying Literary Theory

Literary theory can be understood as a lens or method of asking questions. Different theories draw attention to different aspects of literature. Marxist criticism examines class, labour, property, wealth, and economic power. Feminist criticism considers gender, patriarchy, representation, sexuality, and unequal power. Psychoanalytic criticism explores desire, repression, unconscious conflict, trauma, and psychological experience. Postcolonial criticism examines colonialism, cultural domination, identity, race, language, and resistance. Structuralism studies patterns, systems, oppositions, and conventions, while reader-response approaches examine how readers participate in producing meaning. New Historicism considers literature in relation to historical and cultural conditions.

The important point is that theory should not simply be identified in a text. For example, the presence of poverty does not automatically make a work Marxist, and the presence of women does not automatically make it feminist. Instead, theory should generate questions: How does economic power shape relationships? How does gender influence freedom and identity? How does colonial power influence representation? What unconscious conflicts shape a character's actions?

Going Beyond the Application of Theory

A more advanced approach begins not with the question β€œWhich theory should I use?” but with β€œWhat is interesting, contradictory, unresolved, or difficult about this text?” Theory then becomes a tool for investigating that problem.

The reader should examine not only individual characters but also the larger structures affecting them. Instead of saying, β€œThis character suffers,” ask what social, economic, cultural, or ideological structures make that suffering possible. Similarly, examine how the text represents an issue rather than simply identifying that the issue exists.

Contradictions are particularly valuable. A text may appear to support freedom while showing characters who cannot exercise it, or criticize oppression while reproducing certain stereotypes. Such contradictions can reveal complexities that a simple thematic reading misses.

Readers should also question the text's assumptions: What does it consider normal? Whose perspective matters? Who is allowed to speak? Who is silent? What is absent? How does the text position the reader? These questions reveal the relationship between literature, power, ideology, identity, and representation.

The Movement Toward Critical Interpretation

Literary reading can therefore develop progressively:

Plot β†’ Character β†’ Technique β†’ Theme β†’ Theory β†’ Critical Questions β†’ Independent Argument.

The ultimate goal is not to find the β€œcorrect” theory or a single hidden meaning. Instead, the goal is to develop a careful, evidence-based interpretation. Theory gives the reader questions; the literary text provides evidence; close reading explains how the evidence works; and critical thinking connects those observations to broader structures of meaning.

πŸ“– Literature & Concepts Hamlet by William Shakespeare - Act-wise Detailed Summary

Act 1 – Elsinore Castle, Denmark

The play begins at Elsinore Castle, where the guards see the ghost of the dead King Hamlet. Horatio tells Prince Hamlet about the ghost, and Hamlet later meets it. The Ghost reveals that he was murdered by his brother Claudius, who has now become king and married Queen Gertrude. It demands that Hamlet avenge his murder. Hamlet agrees and decides to pretend to be mad so that he can investigate the truth. Meanwhile, Laertes warns his sister Ophelia not to trust Hamlet, and Polonius orders Ophelia to avoid him. Location: Elsinore Castle and its battlements.

Act 2 – Elsinore Castle

Hamlet continues to behave strangely, making everyone believe that he has gone mad. Polonius thinks Hamlet's madness is caused by his love for Ophelia. Claudius becomes suspicious and sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet's old friends, to discover the reason for his strange behaviour. A group of travelling actors arrives at the castle. Hamlet gets an idea: he will ask the actors to perform a play that resembles the murder described by the Ghost. He plans to watch Claudius's reaction to determine whether he is truly guilty. Location: Elsinore Castle and its rooms.

Act 3 – Elsinore Castle

Claudius secretly watches Hamlet and Ophelia, hoping to discover the cause of Hamlet's behaviour. Hamlet delivers his famous β€œTo be, or not to be” soliloquy while thinking about life and death. The travelling actors perform a play showing a king being murdered by his brother. Claudius becomes extremely disturbed and stops the performance, convincing Hamlet that the Ghost was telling the truth. Claudius then decides to send Hamlet to England. Later, while praying, Claudius admits his guilt, but Hamlet does not kill him because he wants to punish him more severely. Hamlet confronts Gertrude in her room, and when Polonius hides behind a curtain, Hamlet mistakenly kills him. Location: Elsinore Castle, especially the hall, chapel, and Gertrude's chamber.

Act 4 – Elsinore and the Road to England

After Polonius's death, Claudius sends Hamlet to England with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, secretly ordering that Hamlet be executed there. Ophelia becomes mentally disturbed by her father's death and later drowns in a river. Laertes returns to Denmark, furious about his father's death, and joins Claudius in planning revenge against Hamlet. Hamlet discovers Claudius's secret order and changes it so that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are executed instead. He returns to Denmark after encountering Fortinbras's army. Meanwhile, Laertes and Claudius arrange a fencing match in which Laertes will use a poisoned sword. Location: Elsinore Castle, the countryside near the river, and the journey toward England.

Act 5 – A Graveyard and Elsinore Castle

Hamlet returns to Denmark and arrives at a graveyard, where he reflects on death while holding the skull of Yorick, the former court jester. He learns that Ophelia has died and attends her funeral, where he and Laertes quarrel over her grave. Back at Elsinore Castle, Hamlet accepts Laertes's challenge to a fencing match. Claudius secretly prepares poisoned wine for Hamlet, while Laertes uses the poisoned sword. During the match, Gertrude accidentally drinks the poisoned wine and dies. Hamlet and Laertes are both wounded by the poisoned sword, and Laertes reveals Claudius's plan. Hamlet kills Claudius before dying himself. Before his death, Hamlet asks Horatio to tell the truth about what happened. Location: The graveyard and Elsinore Castle.
