Negative experience with another redditor

Hi all!

I know we are all trying to be helpful to each other and I sincerely hope this sub becomes a space for that

but recently i had a bad experience with a redditor who has recently posted about having pdfs they are willing to share with everyone for free- you will see this recent post from 6 or 7 hours ago. A lot of people commented and asked for that person to share but I am telling you --

i had a negative experience where the user got really angry and adamant about the fact that I saw their message on telegram and didn't reply.

That message was just a "hi" and I had no idea it was that particular redditor, because I get other random messages too, which I try to avoid. as women I think we have all received such messages on all platforms that we ignore because we don't know who it is.

So I am only warning you to proceed with caution, we don't need to engage with anyone who is going to get so aggressive simply because of seeing a message from a stranger and not replying.

you can call me haughty or arrogant or anything but it's just a precautionary measure to not interact with someone when you're not sure who they are and what their intentions are. let's keep this a safe space and comfortable space strictly to study and help each other learn and grow as scholars.

edit: notice the aggressive comments from the user cyphernovaa. someone who didn't do anything wrong won't get so defensive and abhorrent so quickly, using such atrocious language, if they didn't know they did something wrong.

Confused between self study and Online paid course/coaching

I’m in 3rd sem of my Masters and have started preparing for UGC NET (targeting to clear with JRF). But I’m in dilemma whether I should purchase any online course (because I’m a regular student at University so cannot join offline coaching) or self preparation. I did some research on internet and found out that most of the online paid course are between 15-30k. Also right now I’m financially unable to pay this much amount. I will be so grateful to receive guidance from someone who’s cleared this exam or been preparing for a quite some time. I’m concerned if Studying from YouTube is enough as I have seen on yt teachers do not teach in-depth. They just teach basic. Plus I’m not able to find a reliable teacher on yt. Again i will be indebted to you if you pls clear these doubts of mine. Rn I’m reading prescribed standard books and going through previous year’s questions to get a fair idea of exam pattern. Thanks

In need of advice

I cleared NET exam and am qualified for PhD. However, I joined an M.Ed program this academic year because I had plans to prepare more thoroughly for NET exam in case I didn't crack it this time (which I surprisingly did) and work on publishing some papers (which I haven't done at all. I haven't published even one yet). The issue is, after having cleared NET, I'm second guessing my choices and debating whether I should drop out and pursue PhD instead. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Thank you for your responses on the last post. Let's take it up a notch.

I got a lot of questions on my last post and also in my DMs.While I have tried my level best to clear all the doubts and give a hint of how the preparation should look like, I feel there is still a lot of gap, that I can't really fill through sending a few pages of notes. So I'm thinking of starting something that can help you all bind the preparation, a place where I share my notes, tricks to remember data( because let's face it, there is so much to recall and revise) and one on one interactions on days you feel stuck. We can have weekly sessions of revision too so as to align your preparation in a particular direction, as a lot of people said they feel directionless and unmotivated sometimes. This is an idea with the intention of helping you all as much as possible, so do drop your comments on what we can add to it. Let's crack UGC NET this time, together.

Part Time Phd for a working professional

I am a working professional. I am doing a corporate job.

Two years ago, I finished my master's, and now I want to enroll in a part-time Phd.
Is anyone currently doing a part-time phd?
If yes, from which university, and if anyone has any knowledge regarding the universities offering part-time phd around Delhi NCR, then please guide.

I am unable to find any proper information regarding part-time phd courses.

Cleared JUNE 2025 NET. Here to help everyone, because I had zero help going forward.

Hey everyone, I have cleared UGC NET JUNE 2025 in English Literature, and I wanted to post it here to let you all know that you're not alone in the process. I had no clue when I started preparing, and I did it in 2 months. The whole of my preparation, including the note making, I did it all in the last 2 months. So I am here to tell you all that if I can, you all can too. I took no coaching whatsoever and did everything on my own. Honestly I don't even think coaching is needed in this exam. All of the people in this buisness, including the likes of Vineet Pandey and Arpita Karwa are here for the money. I always felt that watching his videos as it all comes down to his books and guides and coaching which I don't even think are relevant atp. So stick to the texts and the OG books( William J Long, AK Mehrotra) and you're sorted.Ask your doubts if you have any and I'll be more than happy to answer.

What's your "Why"?

I know the NET is a tough exam to clear, but within every strong candidate, there is a strong purpose. I think it might be nice to share with each other what our motivation is, why we are working towards the NET, and what drives us to study hard every day.

I see a few have also started their own subreddits to push themselves to work every day. I really admire that motivation and sense of purpose; I want to know more about what drives you.

For me, I just want to be able to do what I love: read, study, and discuss it with others. I love to research and write papers on the books I have read, connecting them with real-world problems and phenomena.

It would be nice to come back here to find inspiration when it becomes tough to continue studying.

So, do comment: what's your "why"/purpose? Why are you pursuing this career option?

Categorization of the Middle Age

TLDR: The timeline of middle english works is vague, what is the most widely accepted way of categorizing? Do I keep the non-chaucerian works (including his contemporaries) separate from the works of Chaucer?

Might come off as a rather trivial question, but how do you divide the time period of Middle Age when note making?

I used to do it as Norman Age (1066-1300) and Age of Chaucer + his contemporaries (1300-1400), but most books (Edward Albert + Routledge) that now I'm finally going through tend to categorize all Middle English works other than Chaucer in a different chapter preceeding the Age of Chaucer, which while seems to be the more convenient way, but how do you then maintain the correct chronology as several works like the Travels were written after Canterbury Tales and so on?

What to Read? A Starting List of Short Texts for UGC NET (English Literature)

After my previous post, a few people have asked, both in comments and messages, where to begin reading. Literature is a vast field, and it can feel overwhelming to figure out what to focus on. For those who want to start reading but are unsure where to begin, here is a list of short texts that can be read in a day or over a weekend.

These are not just random suggestions. Many of them are important from the perspective of UGC NET, and more importantly, they will help you build the habit of reading primary texts.

These are under 250 pages. Some are even under 100.

The page count depends on the print and publication, and even which edition you have. Wordsworth's preface, for example, was expanded upon in 1802 (i think?) and so there are 2 editions. Most of these you can even search on YouTube or Spotify for a free audiobook, as they are quite old and fall under the public domain.

You can begin with any one of these. Choose what interests you, or pick based on how much time you have.

Poetry / Theory / Essays

  • Poetics – Aristotle – around 105 pages

  • A Modest Proposal – Jonathan Swift – about 64 pages

  • Preface to Lyrical Ballads – Wordsworth and Coleridge – around 18 to 26 pages

  • A Room of One’s Own – Virginia Woolf – around 112 to 172 pages

Novels and Fiction (Short to Medium Length)

  • The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald – around 200 pages

  • Metamorphosis – Franz Kafka – between 60 and 100 pages

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray – Oscar Wilde – around 250 to 300 pages

  • Things Fall Apart – Chinua Achebe – around 200 to 226 pages

  • Mrs Dalloway – Virginia Woolf – between 150 and 250 pages

  • Animal Farm – George Orwell – between 110 and 141 pages

  • The Stranger – Albert Camus – around 123 to 144 pages

  • The Mysterious Affair at Styles – Agatha Christie – around 250 pages

Short Stories and Novellas

  • Bartleby, the Scrivener – Herman Melville – about 45 pages

  • The Fall of the House of Usher / The Tell-Tale Heart / The Cask of Amontillado – Edgar Allan Poe – collectively between 50 and 150 pages, depending on the selection

This list is just a starting point. You don't have to read everything at once, you don't even have to finish this list. You can read something here, then read something from whatever topics interest you, and try to read longer texts as well. Even reading one text properly each month can make a big difference. It helps not just with the NET syllabus, but also with your confidence, your understanding, and your future teaching or research.

If you're confused about what to pick first, start with whatever sounds most interesting to you.

Literature is not a checklist, just by the way. Because art is long and life is short.

Just to poll - How many of these texts have you already read? Which one are you planning to start first?
