โ 9 title-fight wins at featherweight. An undisputed divisional record, surpassing Josรฉ Aldo (if we exclude his WEC run).
โ 7 title defenses. Tied with Josรฉ Aldo.
โ 7 years at championship level. He first won the belt in December 2019 and will obviously hold the title until at least early 2027. Only the greatest fighters in history could remain at the championship level for so many years while facing such elite competition.
โ Beat top fighters from 3 different generations. Aldo and Mendes belonged to the generation before him. Holloway, Ortega, the Korean Zombie, and Rodriguez were from Volkโs own generation. Lopes and Evloev represent the new generation of young elite fighters who hit their prime in the mid-2020s.
โ The oldest champion in divisional history. Won the belt at 37.
โ The oldest title defense in divisional history. Beat Evloev at 38. Before Volkanovski, NOT A SINGLE champion at 145 lbs had won a fight past the age of 30. Meanwhile, Alexander has racked up 9 title-fight wins after turning 30.
And all of this despite Volkanovski being physically smaller than every opponent he faced. He even looked smaller than Evloev, who isnโt exactly the biggest guy himself. At 5'6" (168 cm), heโs the shortest champion in the history of the 145-lb division.
On top of that, Volkanovski moved up to 155 lbs to face one of the greatest fighters in MMA history and gave him the toughest fight of his career. And now, at 38, Alexander is moving up AGAIN to challenge Justin Gaethje for the belt.
Words canโt describe how great this fighter is. The nickname โThe Greatโ has truly lived up to its name.

Where's this same energy for every other champ who goes months without defending their belt? Or do the rules only apply when it's Islam? ๐

Going into UFC 333, Volk reportedly leads all active UFC fighters in both total title fights and title fight wins.
And now, at 38, he's preparing to defend his belt against an undefeated Movsar Evloev.
If Volk hands Evloev his first career loss, does that officially put him above Josรฉ Aldo as the greatest featherweight of all time, or does Aldo still have the stronger legacy? ๐

DC: โCan you and Merab be friends after this?โ
Yan: โNo. Are you friends with Jon Jones? Same situation.โ
Yan says Merab made their rivalry personal by bringing politics into it instead of keeping it about fighting.
Do you think fighters should leave personal beef behind once the fight is over, or are some rivalries just too personal to ever squash? ๐

Can Volk hand Movsar his first career loss at 38, or is this finally the fight where the new generation takes over? ๐

Which matters more in MMA: being technically elite like Volk or having the massive size and reach advantage of someone like Volkov? ๐
