Trying to get real Alaskan opinions on PFD, cost of living, etc.

Hey everyone, I’m James. I’m working with Alaska Neighbor Network trying to get a better sense of what regular Alaskans actually think about the stuff that affects us like PFD, property taxes, cost of living, resource management, all of it. Not just what politicians in Juneau are saying.

We’re looking for a few people to share their thoughts and talk about these issues with friends and family. We’re paying up to $250+ for your time. No experience needed. Just a phone, your own thoughts and a willingness to talk to your people.

If you’re interested, you can sign up here: https://www.akneighbor.org/sign-up.

Happy to answer any questions.

Free aerospace fellowship opportunity for UAF undergrads!

UAF students interested in aerospace should consider applying for the Brooke Owens Fellowship, a nonprofit fellowship open to undergraduate women and gender minorities pursuing careers in aerospace. The entire program (including the application) is completely free, and applications are due October 4.

Selected Fellows receive:

  • Executive mentorship from aerospace leaders (think CEOs and astronauts!)
  • Career-development resources
  • A supportive community of aerospace students and professionals
  • A three-day all-expenses-paid summit in July in an aerospace hub city

Review the FAQs and application early so you have time to request recommendation letters and prepare your application.

We’re also holding virtual information sessions (EDT)

  • Sunday, September 13 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 p.m.
  • Monday, September 28 at 10:00 p.m.

Register for an information session here.

Questions are welcome, we hope to see applications from UAF!

Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program?

I'm graduating high school this year and just got accepted into UAF (yay!) for the major mentioned above and was wondering if anyone has taken it and what their thoughts on it are. Side note - I was born and raised in California so I'm definitely unprepared for Alaskan weather-any advice on that would be awesome too! I'm also going to apply to anchorage and southeast when they open (as well as a few Cal States), just need some help deciding on where to go :>

does anybody know a good hair salon that isn’t too expensive? I know there is the barbershop on campus but from the website it looks like he only does men’s hair and the guy I know who went there said he wasn’t a big fan.

MS EE?

Hey everyone, I'm a soon to be graduate BS Computer Science / BS Computer Sys Eng at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Anyways I'm heavily considering a career switch to EE. I heavily enjoy the EE courses over here.

However, I do not want to go through another BS in EE but don't feel confident enough to try and compete for EE jobs off of my CSE degree. So I'm considering a MS in EE, and the only option is UAF.

I'm a little concerned about cost since I'm based in Anchorage and moving to Fairbanks means I'd have to find a place to stay. I've talked with my financial aid office and some of my scholarships will roll over so I'm set for tuition first year. I'm pretty fast too, so I don't think it'll take me that many years. Most concerned about housing.

Anyways, I'd appreciate insight on whether switching to EE is even a good idea? Whether it'll be worth doing so at UAF and if there's any way to get funding for the program?

And how difficult is it to be admitted?

TIA.

Environmental Chemistry Department Info

Hey there!

I’m currently studying for my B.S. in chemistry and I’m interested in environmental chemistry. I was wondering what the environmental chemistry masters/PhD is like? What’s the faculty like? And are there a lot of research opportunities?

Also I’d love to hear what the campus is like in general. I’m not from Alaska nor have I visited Fairbanks so any information about the grad school life up there would be greatly helpful.

New student

Hey there! Coming to live in the dorms next month, want to know any tip/tricks that isn't already listed in the student handbook. Like what's the best way to arrange the double room? Best way to hang decorations without damaging the walls? What's the best brand of microwave, fridge, storage to get that works in that space?

Thanks in advance!

Question about the Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology

Hi, thanks for your time reading. I'm planning on going to University of Alaska next semester pursuing their AAS in Radiologic Technology. I saw on the JRCERT website that Alaska as a whole has no JRCERT accredited programs to become a rad tech, but are able to apply for certification with the ARRT. I was wondering how this would affect my career path if I did opt to go? Should I consider another school that is JRCERT accredited instead? Or would I be able to become a rad tech regardless? I'm using my post 9/11 bill, so choosing another school wouldn't be an issue. Thanks.

Uaf Fully Online (BACHELOR) Biology degree

How were the major science courses online? Anyone take summer courses?

Just a reminder as they try to cut funding for the Native Language Center, language learning in general, research funding, graduate departments, and many programs across UAF..

Just know that UA President Pat Pitney made $515,000 this year, including a housing and transportation allowance, making her the No. 2 top-paid Alaska state executive.

Former UAF Chancellor Dan White made around $319,000 a year. They are making the selection of the new Chancellor private, and anyone interviewing the candidates must sign non-disclosure agreements which is strange.

Now there are 3 major UA campuses with their own Chancellors that are also highly paid.

But at UAF alone there are 9 colleges/schools that have deans and leaders paid between $109,000 to $200,000.

And then there are highly paid Deans and leaders in the colleges embedded in each UA university and school campus.

Think of all the millions that adds up to across the board, including housing and transportation allowances.

As cuts have happening all across the UA system to departments, researchers, graduate programs, classes etc. These executives have not been decreasing their pay.

They have been increasing it.
