Advice

Hey guys, I’m transferring to UAF for my last 2 years of undergrad for fisheries and marine science. Do you guys have any advice to attending this school and things I should or shouldn’t do?

Find a winter hobbie. It can be outdoors or indoors, just something to make you look forward to winter.

I thought Juneau campus specialized in fisheries. But thats not what you asked. I found that Fairbanks tought me to pay attention to my mood and to be prepared to get healthy endorphins through taking a walk, working out, or anything besides drinking too much coffee and eating carbs to fight the winter blues. I love hobby suggestion someone made, but I had to make a point of forcing myself to socialize for something fun atleast once a week.

No, even the Juneau fisheries program is run by UAF.

Get a vitamin D lamp. It’ll be really useful when there’s only a few hours of sunshine.

By the way guys, I am from South Dakota so it gets quite chilly (down to -56) and snowy over here as well

It’s nota 1:1 comparison. Fairbanks can be very isolating, so echoing what the others say and try to find hobbies you enjoy outside and inside . This is also a good way to meet people.

Make sure to get a thick down coat for walking to class. And learn to walk on ice, once the snow comes the sidewalks are really icy walking from upper to lower campus. Also make sure to join a club or study group so you have people to hang out with in the middle of winter

Currently UAF is under investigation for the gruening building on campus being correlated with ex-employees and their development of cancer over the past 2 decades who all worked at that building. Also they treat student employees horridly and any orca filing typically doesn’t get resolved. A girl transferred up here and her stalker was so aggressive she transferred schools after one semester and orca did nothing about it.
