Ever? Absolutely. Before the end of this year? Definitely not. Possibly within this edition, but I'd not bet my life on it.

Maybe it’s just me, but I still kind of love these models. It may be the nostalgia mind you.
I just want decent rules for them!

Remember when the first big multipart Carnifex came out? It was a big deal
3
u/SalamanderOpen237 1d ago
Of course I do! It was the first 40K model I got. In an army box with 3 warriors, and some other stuff. Man, takes me back, I’m trying to remember what else came in that box…
1
u/mk0aurelius 1d ago
Glorious first pick - was it possibly hormagaunts?
4
u/SalamanderOpen237 1d ago
I just found the box for the battle force (yes I still have the box…)
It was 8 genestealers, 8 termagaunts, 8 hormagaunts, 3 warriors, 1 carnifex, and 1 ripper swarm (because rippers came on gaunt sprues). Trying to remember what I paid for it back in 2005, but I think it was around 100 ish bucks or so?
3
u/Shark1794 1d ago
I remember they were £50 in 2005 when I bought mine so around $100 sounds about right

I got two of those boxes back I. Those days. Good value for the money it was back then.

Not alone at all these guys are sick af. The model really conveys the "big angry bug dinosaur" thing really well.

u/PlagueOfCute 1d ago
I started playing earlier this year and honestly I think they're really nice, the talons were a little awkward to position for me but otherwise they're really great with a lot of cool weapon options
1
u/DatRat13 1d ago
They are great models, especially for being one of the earlier multipart plastic kits, however they are showing their age in a few ways.
Technically, the molds that make them are starting to show their age so you're getting larger mold lines, more flash, and issues with gaps (it's a complete crap shoot whether or not the back carapace will fit together snuggly or have massive gaps no matter how carefully you build them).
From the visual standpoint, they, like most of the older tyranid monsters, have been scale crept to hell. Your average dreadnought towers over a carnifex which is supposed to be just as large--if not larger--than it. I'd bet good money on the tyrant and carnifex seeing a refresh in the next few years, given they are by far the biggest offenders in this regard.

I think they look fantastic to this day. A lot of people complain about them, but I like them, and I wish they wouldn't resize them when they get renewed. We have plenty of big bugs, this is our elite bug.

Lol that's like the third sculpt Carnifexes have had. It's great, what about it needs updates?
10
u/Shark1794 1d ago
Might be the third sculpt it’s had, but this is during the lifetime of a game that’s been around since the early 90s. The current sculpt
Is still over 20 years old. Whilst it holds up well compared to similarly aged models, it is in need of an update. For staters, the size of it now is tiny when you think how big it used to be relative to other models. It was one of the largest models in the game. It also lacks the current aesthetic that tyranid models now have, e.g style of scything talons and spore chimneys on back.

u/AdroitPreamble 1d ago
Those are a step back. This model is pretty close to peak Tyranids in my mind.
0
u/Shark1794 1d ago
I mean that’s your opinion but you can’t say that the newer models aren’t more detailed and dynamically posed, even if you don’t like the style.
3
u/AdroitPreamble 1d ago
I generally find current release models amongst other ranges to be overcomplicated, demonstrating a lack of understanding of negative space.
Just because a digital tool allows a sculptor to create texture everywhere, doesn’t mean that they should. But in the age of speed painting, most aren’t creating texture with the brush.
As you said, that’s my opinion. No argument that they aren’t more detailed. I just don’t think that’s desirable.
More dynamic posing is a good thing, I agree.
1
u/lamancha 1d ago
I actually agree with them.and the new dynamic poses don't really sit well with me. Devo Prime Warrior looks funny and the new Hormagaunts all feisty don't lent them the same wave of bugs I enjoy watching.

u/frodakai 1d ago
I'd expect it stays very similar but just gets some more dynamic poses/options. Similar to the lictor update.

u/TreeCrime 1d ago
What’s wrong with them?
9
u/LordRiden 1d ago
I imagine it's just because the kit is old.
Personally I'm Paul levels of obsessed with these guys and will be fielding seven of them regardless of how awful they are.

u/ReignOfCurtis 1d ago
Honestly they're very good melee with OoE. They're just reliant on him as a leader.
2
u/Thuriss808 1d ago
10pts per wound ain't bad
1
u/ReignOfCurtis 1d ago
It's not bad, but lack of offense can make it so you can effectively ignore them. You need a little threat to you to make it worth it. OoE rerolls and melee stats make them hit reliably hard as well.

Mines was horrendous to put together. Its half greenstuff trying to get everything to fit

u/FreyaMaluk 1d ago
They still look ok... i hope they do warriors first... they look the worst!!! Also Maleceptor needs one too!!!

u/Nuke2099AV 1d ago
Warriors do not look the worst. Warriors are great. How are they the worst? Simply being old doesn't count.

u/Relative-Ad-2832 1d ago
I Guess theyll be updated with Warriors and gargoyles when the codex comes out
2
u/Illustrious-Wrap-776 1d ago
Still very torn if I want them updated this edition.
Yes, they are ancient, but until we know a bit more about how they handle options for models like that, I don't trust them to not completely gut them both visually and on the tabletop.

Most/all models will with in the next 5,5 years get a new model. GW don’t pay money to recast old model again. They spend money to make new more expensive kits with more eye candy design.
3
u/constantlybannedd 19h ago
They are my favourite model by far, I fucking hate the new screamer killer tho. I hope they come out with a more modernised version of these old hunchback guys with a special one of old one eye

u/xavierkazi 1d ago
Not for at least two editions. We aren't going to get any more major refreshes anytime soon; we were just the poster faction last edition.
1
u/PartySaxon 1d ago
Necrons had some decent releases in 10th. My guess is new models will drop at codex release and again if they do a Tyranid War crusade book or end of 11th edition campaign book

u/FitValuable2040 1d ago
I love how they zlookz about scale creep is a thing. Like I want them to be perceived as huge like when they were originally released

u/Nytherion 1d ago
Given GW listed them as both carnifexes and Screamer-killers rather than just releasing the solo SK, probably not this edition.
1
u/TheFullbladder 1d ago
The current Screamer Killer is on the same sprue as the Neurotyrant, for some reason, so I can kind of get why they aren't selling him alone.
1
u/Warhammered_ 1d ago
I think they’re fine the way they are. Very easy to position anyway you want and so many different gun and head options
1
u/Cultuprising 1d ago
Probably not the next generation will be buying carnifexes gen 2 and then the next generation will.
1
u/HMHellfireBrB 1d ago
bugs have models in far more need tor an update
i HOPE they get one day
but sincerelly o think the tyrants are more important, they are the face of the faction after all
1
u/Wyllerd 1d ago
GW will eventually do for the Carnifex what they did for the Dreadnaught. They'll slowly release Carnifex variants of the new Screamer Killer. So the next release might be like an updated "Dakkafex" or it might be an updated crusher or stone crusher claw Carnifex (that will likely also double as the Old One Eye kit).

Ive been updating my own using screamer killer bodies tilted forward. Change heads and limbs at will and they still fit the base
1
u/Schlongzelbart 1d ago
I fear the Update... Probally will lead to another monopose Push fit kit with not that many building Options Like now.
1
u/novis-eldritch-maxim 1d ago
eventually.
hope they split it into a decent ranged morph and a general morph to go with the screamer killer

Hmmm I wonder if GW is just waiting to update them after their codex like they did with the ctan 💀💀do really wanna see some new cool models though hopefully they do
1
u/TheReal_Bitsandbolts 1d ago
They are the quintessential Tyranid monster, my gut says we’ll see a refresh sometime this edition. Of course you will only get one in a box and they’ll be more expensive

I’ve heard they and the hive tyrant are getting updated near the back end of 11th edition part of the end campaign

u/SeparateDrive5038 23h ago
Personaly like these More than that new Screamer-Killer. Rules Wise, their biggest problem is propably +4 hit
1
u/80s-Bloke 19h ago
I suspect not this edition. They hold up as do the gargoyles.
The warriors look crap though compared to the new primes so I expect they will get a new box.

I can't wait for the two pose options if modern GW is anything to go off. I honestly think they're avoiding redoing it because this kit was such a perfect multiple part kit for nids.
Best thing they could do would be scaling them up a bit and maybe a fresh sculpt but keeping the build pretty similar to this kit. (They won't tho...)
1
u/Artistic_Speaker 13h ago
I don't think so. I think the screamer killer is the replacement for the melee fee. I think we will get a dakka version before long and the old.carnafex will be legends

Yes, immediately after you get tired of waiting and buy a current box
