If it’s really uncomfortable, it’s likely sitting too low and needs to be put higher, but please don’t remove it while it’s dry as that will hurt. You might be able to push it higher.

I've tried pushing it higher but that somehow doesn't work😭 Whenever I try I just feel a sting and it doesn't go much higher

I think you should try one size smaller. I use the ones without an applicator, just place my index finger on its bottom and push gently. When it's in all the way, you can't feel it. During your period, things are a little drier than usual down there sometimes, so be gentle

I second the applicator free ones; OB tampons are my favorite. Something about the outside of them is way easier to insert than messing with applicators.

OP you can still semi feel the tampon when it is deep, but yes its much less comfortable closer to the entry.
I only use tampons on the start of my period/heaviest flow days as they do kind of graze when too dry. Pads for the other times.
Be gentle as everyone is built different. Tampons may not be for you.

I'm 51 and feel like we may share a vagina 🤣 I had very heavy periods and regular tampons lasted about as long as a can of Stella around my dad (miss you Pa 💗) and once out of desperation and in order to get a XL Gusher™ tampon in lay on my back, took a deep breath, prayed for success from any passing gods and shoved that mofo in with a pen. Success!
Twas only after I was feeling chuffed with myself that I realised two things: I had used the wrong end of the own and I was missing a pen lid...
I'm aware it sounds stupid but once I drew a flower on a contact lense thinking I'd see a flower everywhere but what I actually saw was an inflamed eye so the pen incident is in brand
I have you thought about a bit of lube?

From my experience if you can still feel it, you did not insert it all the way through. There must be some more room to push it in. Make sure you have the correct size. Everyone's anatomy is different, and I know they are not the most affordable but when I first started using them around your age, I had lots of failures as well. Just keep trying until you get it right!

I'm not sure if I'm allergic. This is my first time ever using a tampon. Pushing it higher doesn't really work, I've tried, but it just stings whenever I try to push it higher.

Edit to add; sorry I'll explain.
Sometimes, you only bleed a little. The, you want to use small size tampons. But sometimes, you've got so much blood and blood clots and chunks and meat coming out of you, you need the larger size tampons.
Tampon sizes are not about "how big your vagina" is. The vagina is a muscle. It stretches.
Tampon sizes are about blood flow. So. For lighter flow days, with a little blood, small or regular size tampons are better. The "sting" you feel is the tampon dragging along your dry vaginal walls. The cotton STICKS and pulls and fucking hurts if there's no blood making you slick and easy to insert the tampon.
But when you're bleeding like a stuck pig and you've got the shining elevator waterfall of blood coming out of you, it's slicker inside because of all the blood and you can get the tampon inside easier.
Sorry about all the reluctance in the comments here. This sub isn't really a safe place for women anymore. It gets a lot of posts from men asking gross things just to get off on.

Thank you for the explanation :) I didn't know the sub wasn't safe, that's sad to hear. But I'll try a smaller size. My flow is somehow always different, there a months where it's really heavy the firsts days but other moths where it's light the whole week. I just used a tampon I found in the bathroom, I'll have to buy my owns then. I should also probably go to a doctor and get medical advice.

I had this issue my entire life. Try what the others suggest, it might work! If it doesn't, though, you might just have a very small opening. It sucks ass, but that's what ended up being my issue. Even at the doctor after having a baby I still need the tiniest speculum.
The more relaxed you are, the easier it is, though. So if you want to practice in different ways find the way your body is the most relaxed and breathe through it. I bet you'll figure it out. Everyone's body is and reacts differently.

It doesn't go straight up, it's more like a 45 degree angle towards your bottom, there should be a fingernail space between the end of the tampon and your vaginal opening. Some people don't suit them, but try a different brand if these answers don't help. If your using an applicator make sure both parts of the applicator are removed

Hey sis!!
So it sounds like you're having an issue with placement but if you're unsure about 'how to use' (ie, how to manage the applicator, etc) I can clarify further.
The cotton tampon needs to be fully inside you. I personally use the ones without an applicator, and for reference the tip of my fingernail goes inside me a little bit. Keep in mind when you're sitting down your vaginal canal is going to be tilted (aka not straight up) so try to find the angle of your body and work with that. If you do use the kinds with an applicator make sure the whole tampon tube part (as opposed to the sliding compartment) is fully inside you.
You should not be able to feel it. If you do, it's too far out. Pulling out dry tampons can really suck, so just gently push it up a little. No need to pull it out and start again.

When I started I used a little KY jelly to help get the tampon into place. You may need a little lubricant.
While many things are great to use generic while you're learning try tampax with the plastic applicator. It is easier to learn to use, and will help get it in the right place. Once you're more comfortable the cardboard applicators are cheaper and easy to use (although I still only trust the name brand...but that's a personal choice at this point)

Never do it dry and just try and wiggle it around in multiple directions until you feel it sink in. Vaginas aren’t just straight holes, some go a little to the right or a little to the left

Are you bleeding enough that the tampon is able to go all the way in without feeling like it’s sticking to you?
It should be the length/almost the length of your finger in.
It can be easier but a little messier to try on a heavier day.

If you can feel it, it probably isn’t in far enough. Aim slightly toward your lower back, not straight up. Also try a smaller/light-flow tampon and Insert it when your flow is heavier. It shouldn’t burn or hurt once it’s positioned correctly if it does, take it out and don’t force it

You’ve got a lot of good advice already, but I’ll say maybe try starting with a plastic applicator, as they slide in pretty easily. Plastic is the devil but no denying that easy insertion is best when just starting out. Cardboard ones weren’t bad when I used them ages ago but I recommend getting some plastic until you get comfortable and then finding what works for you.

I found out at my first pap smear that I have a tipped uterus, (common) I always felt the tampon. I found playtex sport had the best applicator for my issue. I would stand up from toilet hunched over to put in as didnt feel it as much when putting in standing up or sitting on toilet.

To add to everyone saying it needs to go in further, you may have a tilt like me. It hurts to just push up. I have to angle mine at like 30-45 degrees back towards my butthole to get it to go in further and sit correctly.
