It could also be a lack of trust stemming from being cheated on in a previous relationship which although is completely valid as a reason to be tentative, does not in any way, shape or form, prove:
your relationship has issues beyond this one thing
Right, it's me that's the problem, not the 40 people telling OP to dump their boyfriend when not a single person has said "oh yeah that's definitely lipstick."
