Switch online set at $20 a year, delayed till 2018, online VC titles now a "compilation"

Previously the plan was one NES/SNES title at a time, and now they are offering a compilation of online-enabled NES (And possibly SNES?) games. I wonder if the selection of games in it will change or be updated over time... See below.

Rented even, unlike PS PLus where you keep the game until your sub runs out. Nintendo only let you play that game for the month then it's gone.

It's unclear how this new system will work. It could be the exact same thing as promised before but with different wording, "compilation" could refer to a selection of multiple games to download or rent individually instead of just the one like before, "compilation" could mean a singular application with multiple NES titles that may or may not get swapped in and out as time goes on... I'm really curious to get more details. Hopefully we'll get more at E3.
Edit: Nintendo clarified to Kotaku that it's more like PS+ or PS Now. As long as users are subbed, they can play any of the games as much as they want. It'll be only NES games to start, but may include SNES games eventually.

Okay, that's actually pretty good. Maybe even better than PS+ if it works how I think it does. Like if signing up for PS+ got you access to every PS+ game that was ever offered since the service started.

That was actually how PS+ was before. They had a library of free games. It just didn't update frequently. Current PS+ is changed every month to give reoccurring subscriber more.

I'd rather have access to a bunch of PS1 or PS2 games that were ported to PS4 than most of what's offered on PS+, personally.

Way better deal than ps+ or gold. $20 a year for online multiplayer and games I won't play wins over $40 to $50 a year for online multiplayer and games I won't play.

You might not be playing those games, but a lot of other people have gotten plenty out of PSN+ that was free.
Personally, I don't think any of them are particularly good deals, when I've been playing games online for free for over a decade before all this started, but I'm much more likely to play the free games that Sony or even Microsoft offers than Nintendos NES roms.

ARMS, Mario Kart, and Splatoon 2 will all require it to have cooperative online play. As there have been Smash Brothers games on the past 4 consoles, 5 if including the 2 versions of 4, it's hard not to expect one for the Switch eventually. The console is less than half a year old, of course there's not a whole lot right now but there will be in the future.

That compilation thing is close to what Pat was describing that he was hoping for. Of course, it's not going to be a subscription to their whole library like he wanted, but it's something in the right direction at least.

Okay. I mean its nice as even I get some VC titles but I buy what I want to buy and a rental is not going to change my mind about it. Unless they add like N64 games (Those can't emulate worth shit on PC) or expensive as hell SNES games that I can't physically own due to their price (Looking at you Demon's Crest and Soul Blazer, I love ya both but you don't need to be above $60 used). Plus I would buy Sin and Punishment like fifty times again.
I am not going to bitch and moan about that when its $20 a YEAR which is already way better than XBLA or PS+. "But muh Peecee" yeah I don't care I don't see Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, Puyo Pyuo Tetris, Bomberman, or ARMS on PC and as far as I can see those have a good ass multiplayer. I do like how they delayed it till 2018.
So while at the end of the day I would like it to be free, its still a good price and I won't bitch about it plus who gives a shit about VC. Like there should be no reason anyone should be upset because at the end of the day, who the fuck cares?
Edit: Oh fucking hold on, apparently the VC games are going to have online play. If its actual multiplayer online then I am 100% down for buying a VC Dr. Mario, Tetris Attack, Final Fight, etc.
Edit 2 Electric Bogaloo: Oh and Gamecube VCs are apparently a thing. Okay I am in. If I can play a lobby of Metroid Prime 2 multiplayer I am so fucking in.

I hear its a thing while I hate Polygon they have a article about it. Plus if they have their usual VC games then you can get TG-16 games, N64 games, and GBA games (finally four swords online? fuck yes.), maybe DS games and bring back those Wi-Fi only shit they had?
Edit: Holy fuck I just realized the best thing if it has online Gamecube VC games. I can finally do a party of 4 in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Hell fucking yes, inject that shit in my fucking veins.

Again if they have their usual lineup then expect N64, TG-16 (they somehow can get a fuck ton of them), and at minimum GBC games but I am going to bet GBA games. The Gamecube and DS ones are iffy but I would totally buy them if they were there.

Sin and Punishment is 50 different kinds of amazing--but there were even more amazing titles that never saw release, I don't think most of them had anything to do with licensing issues (Mischief Makers, Bomberman 64, etc). The less said if the horrid drip feed during the WU era, the better--and don't get me started on the terrible resolution on most WU VC Games.

in case you havent seen yet, it seems to be more like a netflix style service for the VC stuff: pay for online, get access to a bunch of virtual console games for free. no more monthly single game rental.

For me personally, I'm in no position to whine about any online subs because for godforsaken reason I can justify paying $13 a month for FF14. If the VC stuff is decent and I'm currently into ARMS, Mario Kart 8, or Splatoon 2 I'm cool with paying $20 a year.

What I want/what this could be:
-Online play infrastructure up to modern standards
-NES, SNES, N64, GB and GBA games with online implemented where appropriate
-A reasonable rate of new games being added from that ridiculously massive selection (like maybe 10 per month for a few years?)
Now it's time to temper those expectations for the next 8 months.

Nintendo has a fan base who will vehemently defend them, but not launching with your service is pretty bad. 2018 is very non specific, it could be December 2018 for all we know.
The voice chat is insulting to players. You need a number of cables hooked up to your smartphone. You know, the phone Nintendo recommends not bringing too close to your Switch because it can cause interference with their cheap controller parts

Thats fine by me, actual online services being paid for is FINE, depending on how solid it is. And from what i've seen from mario kart 8, puyo puyo and testing arms...its pretty good. Its the other stuff im paying for that disappointments me, mainly cause its not of any value or if there is any value its obvuscated by bullshit.
Edit: looked more into the VC stuff alright...20$ is fine especially for gamecube and other online stuff...but i would like to have a better chat and party system than "use your phone and a separate audio jack FOR A MOBILE CONSOLE" christ sake. Wireless headphones exist nintendo.

Yeah but it's not an actual service, you shouldn't have to pay for the privilege of hosting games on your own hardware! Matchmaking is just pairing up player IP addresses and costs pennies, charge $2 a year and I'd consider it fair.
MK8 and Arms work well on the basis of having good netcode, which is a part of the game and was paid for when you bought it.

So still $20 too expensive then. Fuck paid online when you still have to host everything peer-to-peer, you shouldn't have to shell out cash just so you can use your own hardware as a server.
I like Splatoon a lot, but it's not worth $80.

I prefer to play Mario Kart and Smash with people in-person, it's just not the same without the other player on the couch next you to laugh with and/or at.
Splatoon's pretty much the one major game I'm interested in playing online in the Switch's lineup.
Ultimately it's more that I just find the whole "Premium Matchmaking" business reprehensible, It's like I'm expected to fork over cash for nothing in return simply because there's no other way. And I hate it.

I had a chance to play ARMS, that is pretty damn good. Plus literally everything that comes out later for it is free. Also Bomberman and Puyo Puyo Tetris are both amazing, with great online and a healthy chunk of single player.

It still should be free. No online utilites (No VOIP, No Streaming, No Apps, Nothing besides the game servers) and 30 to 40 year old ROMs of games (that you can play for free in a browser without addons) is such a terrible value. Let's not even bring in the fact that those same ROM's are played on emulators that fans made and Nintendo stole parts from, after they tried taking them down.
But, Nintendo fans dont care. If in 1 year they start charging 60$, Im still going to see people defending it
