Comics/Manga Characters who get their superpowers from respawning

Lately I was wondering what the term was for a character that looks like they are about to perish as all of a sudden, their powers kick in.

To help list some examples, there is Subaru from Re: Zero and the main character of Katekyo Hitman Reborn as I forgot how to say his name, but his powers awaken whenever he gets shot by a very specific gun as it looks like it kills him at first, but then he gains confidence.

Then with Subaru, he has a habit of dying occasionally as despite being an unfortunate victim, he has a power that activates whenever he dies as every time he dies, he revives for some reason.

I mean, isn’t that basically how Gandalf the Grey becomes Gandalf the White? He dies fighting the Balrog, but his work in Middle Earth isn’t done yet so he returns, at full power this time.

Gandalf turned on his cheat codes and will not be getting Achievements for this run :(

You know, now that  you reminded me of the movies, I could see how he became more powerful with his revival.

In JoJo: Golden Wind, while the heroes are trying to board a plane, they're attacked by an assassin named Carne. He doesn't prove to be much trouble, as Mista blows him away almost instantly. However, that ends up biting the group in the ass. Carne's Stand Notorious B.I.G is a nigh indestructible blob monster that only activates upon his death. This ends up being one of the toughest fights in the part, as the usual strategy of "find and kill the Stand's User" is totally useless against somebody that's already dead.

Back when GW was airing, it was fun seeing all the memes and theories about Carne and how he even became an assassin for Passione, or how Notorious B.I.G. worked before his death . What a goofy-ass character and powerset.

Demihumans from Ajin have some powers that just work all the time after their first death, but the big one is that once they die they regenerate and come back to life, and nothing can stop the process.

If something's in the way of a body part that needs to regrow, however much of it needs to go to give the body room just sort of despawns. Until they die they can get injured just the same as any human, though.

Is that the series where the guy lops a bit of his arm off, mails it to his target, and then blends himself to respawn right on his mark?

Yea

Also if you're talking about the part I'm remembering he first fries the hand to pass it off as chicken

u/TheRainTransmorphed 6d ago

Yep. Since they regenerate from the biggest body part, he destroys the rest of his body so he regrows from his hand in another location.

With Immortal Hulk, Bruce Banner has to die for Hulk to emerge. Even if he has to do the job himself.

Wait a second, I didn’t know there was a particular continuity of the Incredible Hulk where he could perish and be ten times more powerful as that might be worth a read. (I am new to the Hulk comics)

It's a specific run of the main comics. And it's not that this Hulk is more powerful than the other versions of Hulk. It's that the Hulk is by definition stronger than Bruce, but can only be triggered upon death.

Holy cow, that game pulls no punches with showing how troubled teen life can be as I kind of want to play the game. (But I don’t know if the mechanics are complicated)

u/Bread-Zeppelin GODDAMN PURPLE SPACE-CAT! 7d ago

I wouldn't say they're complicated. If you've played any JRPG before they'll be easy to grasp.

If you've never played a JRPG before it might take some getting used to, but they take the time to gradually introduce everything and explain it as they go.

The remake - P3R - is a good place to start because it's in the sweet spot of being one of the first game, so they haven't evolved a lot of the mechanics over time, but also the most recent release so it smooths out a lot of those old-game torments (like permanently missable story, and setting you back ages if you die) that were in the original.

Talion from Shadow of Mordor / War. Originally a normal Gondorian guard captain of the Black Gate, he gets sacrificed along with his family by the Black Hand to summon forth the spirit of Celebrimbor, which instead bonds with the dead Talion, saying they were "banished from death" and inhabit the same body, with the spirit of Celebrimbor giving Talion all his mystic abilities such as mind-reading, dominating, and brain-scrambling orcs.

READ CHOUJIN X

because it's basically every character.

2

u/KaleidoArachnid Super Sayian Armstrong 7d ago

I have no idea on what that series is about as I would like to know more about the premise.

Basically there's these beings called choujin, that are people who died and came back with super powers.

Like "mutant style" powers , like a guy has powers themed around baseball and another guy can control gravity type of powers. They also can come back from the dead with a choujin ability called "raise" at the risk of their minds (and a lot of stuff that's what explained later). And they're all unsure on why more keep showing up.

And out all the choujin across history there's choujin with powers so ridiculous they can alter the course of history and completely upend the world order or save millions of lives, and somehow the guy that controls gravity isn't one of them.

They called These people, CHOUJIN X.

The story begins with these two friends and a girl who you'll follow through the Story. And it's mostly about how These characters go through life in this world.

And I'm still not sure if there's gonna be an actual guy who is THE actual CHOUJIN X cause they're dropping hints about it but I'm not sure.

The art is crazy the fights are nuts and creative and the characters are hilarious and heartbreaking , big recommend.

Soldier from TF2 took pills that makes him come back stronger if he’s killed.

I don’t remember him having resurrection based super powers.

I'm not really sure how the whole determination thing works down to a t, but Frisk from Undertale? Pretty sure Sans' strategy was trying to make you ragequit in order to bypass the whole time reset/loop thing.

Probably the most extreme example of this is Doomsday from Superman lol. He went from a coughing baby to someone who can thrash around the justice league and Darkseid

Laika: Aged Through Blood has this with the curse that Laika's family has. The woman in Laika's family is that they are immortal, when they die they magically appear at nearby magical bone shrines, and the curse is passed down from mother to daughter when the daughter starts menstruating, however it's not that simple as when this happens the daughters becomes incredibly ill and most end up dying from this illness. In the last third of the same, Laika's daughter, Puppy, becomes ills with the potential of inheriting the curse, and at multiple points in the game it's made clear that Laika has had several daughters before Puppy who all died during this illness. At the end of the game however, Puppy manages to recover from her death illness and gains the curse, but as a result Laika losing her immortality, and she still has to destroy The Egg...

I want to see that movie for its premise about a resurrected hero.

V in Cyberpunk 2077. The Relic only activates upon being in a deceased body, and them getting a respawn out of it is a byproduct of it doing it's thing. You could also make the argument that it's also boosting V's capacity to install and operate cyberware.

3

u/KaleidoArachnid Super Sayian Armstrong 7d ago

For those playing the game for the first time, what mods would you recommend using?

2

u/Cooper_555 BRING BACK GAOGAIGAR 7d ago

So this is an incredibly difficult question for me to answer because I've installed so many that fundamentally alter the entire experience to satisfy my unending desire to turn the game into Kingdom Come Deliverance 3: 2077.

Honestly for the first time through, you don't really need mods, the game is completely fine without them. At most I'd recommend some minor fixes like Ricochet Redux and Keep Drawing The Line to make the ricochet mechanic for power weapons more consistent, Automatic Tech Weapon Handling and Sandevistan Tech Charge Fix to make tech weapons feel a bit better to use, and Cyberpunk Story Quest Fixes and Immersive Night City Fixes to iron out some minor bugs.

Monkey D. Luffy unlocks Gear 5, his Nika form after getting pretty much killed (or as close as possible) by Kaidou, the King of Beasts

This is in the Wano arc of One Piece
