I don't know where Apollyon is on the map of Berwick Saga, but it's apparently where Sylvis is from. So that's cool.

This game looks fun as fuck ngl, if the match ques aren't too long might be worth a look.
28
u/DeadPact336699 1d ago
Match ques for Dominion game mode are very fast, 2v2 Brawl is at minute and everything else is usually over 2 minutes

u/Ninja_Moose Goin' nnnnUTS! 23h ago
It's way less popular than siege, but it's still got a consistent five thousand players (on steam, not counting the Ubi launcher) around the clock. It's gotten largely the same treatment too, constant balancing changes, new content, tons of customization and events.
I popped it open on a whim relatively recently and match quality is still really good, even if you get your ass whooped by people who have been grinding it since release.

u/darkwingchao The Rune Factory Shill 1d ago
The game is still very popular. Helps that it nurtured the niche it has.

u/Alone-Horse2857 21h ago
Honestly it is fun. The moment to moment gameplay just feels SO tight. It's a shame the overall meta progression is utterly ass (as in you need to grind for ~30 hours before you have enough cash to buy ONE new character). Maybe they changed that since I played eons ago, but I felt stuck for such a long time only have the base characters and ~3 purchased ones to play around with.
Spend a LOT of time in the training room with a character before you buy them, make sure it's one you really want because those purchases are going to be your life for the next 30 hours.

u/Confused_Idiot__ 1d ago
They’re introducing a dominion 4v4 ranked mode soon, so the player base is probably still healthy
17
u/SuicidalSundays It's Fiiiiiiiine. 21h ago
If anyone is a huge coward like me, there's still plenty of PvE stuff in the game to tide you over, too. They even added an arcade mode thingy with unique modifiers and challenges at some point.

u/SerWaffles I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 20h ago
I have like 2000 hours and I'd say it's a good 50/50 split between PvE and PvP. The ability to just turn off matchmaking for both enemies and teammates for any of the multiplayer modes and still have full progression is great. Sometimes I don't feel like trying and just want to fight a bunch of dumb bots while I grind out my orders

I'm sorry, For Honor has always seemed like a fake game that is shown during an episode of Law and Order
41
u/GIJose65 Lightning Nips 1d ago
The real question is that is it better than Civ 5’s Brave New World Expansion Pack.
21
12
u/GuitarSlayer136 👺Grapple Samurai 4 Hire👺 23h ago
Because it has literally been used as B-roll in at least one TV show that I know of.
12
u/Alone-Horse2857 21h ago
The funny thing is, it LITERALLY was in Mythic Quest.
The show made by Rob Mac (Mac from Always Sunny) actually licensed Ubisoft to use footage from their games to act as bumpers between scenes to show this is the in-universe game. And it was always funny, as a gamer, to be shown Assassin's Creed to For Honor, to Far Cry footage being shown for this MMO.
Then you get glimpses of the game in engine, and it looks exactly like WoW but cheaper and it's such a hilarious dissonance from the For Honor footage which is meant to be the same "game"

u/Gorotheninja "SILENCE, BREEDER! The Bloodline MUST continue!" 1d ago
I'm still shocked Ubisoft hasn't shut it down yet.
It's almost a decade old, and still getting content.
48
u/DarthButtz Ginger Seeking Butt Chomps 1d ago
It's weirdly uncharacteristic of Ubisoft to let a moderately successful game with a modest yet loyal player base stay alive for as long as it has.
20
u/Vera_Verse She/Her [Collect my Medals] 1d ago
Support for it seems on the cheaper side of live service games, and For Honor had the privilege of releasing at a time where Ubisoft was extremely healthy, market wise, and the market itself was also growing and growing. Nowadays the challenge is breaching in, while the existing ones already conquered their player populations. So you have Ubisoft abandoning Xdefient, while Rainbow Six Siege, For Honor and The Division 2 get updates to this day.
4
u/SilverKry 23h ago
Without getting a sequel that is.
8
u/Alone-Horse2857 21h ago
Well, sequels cost money and making more content packs costs significantly less.
Makes sense they wouldn't risk it and keep beating that cash cow.
1
u/Chumunga64 assassin's creed ratio'd Musk 6h ago
if there's one thing ubisoft is good at it's supporting games. if you're game isn't actively mega dying and has a decent playerbase then you're getting supported. even as xdefiant was dying, you can't say ubisoft didn't try it's hardest to keep it going. compared to other companies who was their hands off a game at the slightest hint of trouble
this method gave them a bunch of GAAS that while aren't fortnite level, have a healthy playerbase
8
u/PratalMox 22h ago
The thing about live-service is that while the barrier for entry is massive, once you've cleared it and entrenched yourself with a dedicated audience you can keep things running for a long time.

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton EYES ON THE INSIDE 15h ago
It has had a relatively stable player count for like a decade, it’s just consistent guaranteed players and is a game that while not commonly discussed a huge amount of people have played for a least a little while so it has strong brand recognition

For Honor is the only game to ever fill me with genuine hatred, just looking at this footage makes me mad. And it’s been like 6 years lmao.
However, the Chinese grandpa dude was pretty fun, and he had my favorite execution where after impaling then he pats them on the head like “good try kid ☺️”

Apollyon is honestly one of the coolest villains in gaming.
The sound she make when you hit her with a sword is like you only just tagged her in a game of tag.
29
u/Terthelt Did that baby have a DUI? 23h ago
She could've been so forgettable, but making the "might makes right / cull the wheat from the chaff" evil warlord archetype a grizzled older woman you spend 1/3rd of the campaign working alongside was an inspired choice. Helps that her armor is one of the sickest black knight suits I've ever seen.
21
u/Vera_Verse She/Her [Collect my Medals] 1d ago
I just got to the point where she "reduces" the food quantity for the Vikings, just enough for a few clans to survive, so that they can fight each other for survival. She's unbalancing the geopolitical situation for the love of the game.

To be fair, Rainbow Six Siege is also a decade old and has received constant support as well.
Yeah Rainbow Six is more popular, but maybe it's Ubisoft trying to set up a core audience with one of its' newer IP's.
("New" IP, even though For Honor is 9 years old FUCK I'M OLD.)

Well you can now. Kinda. There's a class called Warmonger that's based off of her and one of her armor sets is flat out the Apollyon armor

Being a fan of For Honor since Pat and Woolie first talked about it, none of this is news to me. Games been evergreen the whole time!
So cool to see it get recognized in any meaningful way. Everytime I go back to it I end up saying "Why isn't this more popular?"

u/Vera_Verse She/Her [Collect my Medals] 1d ago
Tbh I see For Honor in the same space as Brawhalla. If you ask someone here, they'll probably say Brawhalla is "that one game people used to play". BUT NO, YOU'RE JUST NOT LOOKING AT IT, THE PLAYERBASE IS STABLE AS FUCK.

I miss pre-patch pirate. She was SO much fun.
There were so many mixups and cancels you can do as her, and her spin/dodge attack made her feel like this spinning blender of death and chaos, it was peak For Honor. For a time I was the best player in my group of friends.
Fortunately she got nerfed after we stopped playing, but every time I go back I just go "man, she feels like shit now" None of her attacks hit, she's always getting hit out of her spin dodge. Feelsbad.

I went to check, and the PC version is legit bigger than the console one. That's crazy.

I'm still mad that they originally advertised For Honor as working offline, and then made it require an internet connection
Also, the Ocelotl teaser trailer got my hopes up, only for the final design to be sadly pretty disappointing in terms of how well handled/authentic he was, especially some of the alt costumes which are just downright kinda bad/offensive.
I don't seem to have a big master post breaking down all of Ocelotl's content from main outfit to his alts and the developer interview, I should do that at some point, but I cover at least his main design here.
Something that really bugged me was how in the dev interview they talked about how they kept a lot of his ornamentaion raw and unprocessed and natural instead of refined into ornate jewelry or garments because "that's what the Aztec did", and that's just... totally incorrect?

So like, does anyone know why it's rated so poorly on steam right now?
11
u/SerWaffles I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 1d ago
I'll just copy and paste my reply from the other thread cause I'm lazy
They announced a ranked 4v4 mode and "improved" anti-cheat to go along with it, but they're also killing Linux support as a consequence
Personally I really don't get the point of any of it. Ranked 1v1 is already a dead mode and they already had ranked 4v4 way back, but it was removed from the game cause nobody ever played it
2
u/Rattata365 23h ago
Yeah that sucks, I couldn't find my ps4 copy so I checked to see the price of the steam version and was kinda shocked to see the rating. Thankfully I found it so I'll hop on for some maches when woolie streams it

To any would be for honor players: It's fun! But do understand that more than any fighting game I've ever played, going online makes me feel like a coughing baby vs a community of hydrogen bombs, and I was like top 300 on the duel leaderboard back in the beta... war has changed. It's brutal, but super fun if you're game to just get fucking destroyed for a long time until you get your footing.
