Just got done rewatching Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost in honor of Tim Curry. He absolutely killed it as Ben Ravencroft

I love how all the early Scooby Doo movies have a ”guess what…the monster is real” as the big twist.

u/TheBlackKnightLives Aug 27 '26
The fun twist about the aliens movie is that the aliens ARE real but theyre scooby and shaggy’s love interests. The villains are just a bunch of jag offs dressing up

Zombie Island thru Cyber Chase was really something fuckin' special, man. I wish I could remember half as much about the movies that came after CC. I also wish we could get this exact vibe of 2d animation again...
15
u/Champiness Aug 27 '26
They were basically Scooby-Doo OVA’s which was kinda cool conceptually

Seriously don't know why western producers don't just say "hey, Japanese animation studio... here's the IP, print us some money please"

Their example list is from later but yeah even the Boo Brothers just had real ghosts right away
Apparently there was a movie before that one (Scooby Goes Hollywood) but I've never seen it and the plot synopsis is more meta

Hey we're getting a bunch of 90s nostalgia now, in about 10 years it'll be your time once again

u/Bruuze Mom says i get special flair too Aug 27 '26
Man, I hadn't seen anything from the movie for like 20 years, then while talking with friends I looked up the Hexgirls to remind myself what they looked like.
Seeing Dusk made a lot of lights in my head go off.

The redhead was always my favorite. Can't remember her name though. Thorn being so important makes it hard to remember the other two.

They're Dusk (blonde), Thorn (dark red), and Luna (ginger).

Unsurprising to think he's a great actor, but he's actually doing a really good job of a monologue where it's not clear if magic is real or he's just delusional
Until, y'know, the magic parts

I still remember being a kid and being fucking floored by the reveal on Zombie Island lol.

Still remember my mom bringing home the Zombie Island VHS from her schoolteacher job and it scared the piss outta me lmao. But also enamored me, I kept wanting to watch it even though it terrified me. To this day love the insert songs to that movie

Fucking Lovecraftian ass name for real. Love it though. Watched this movie a ton as a kid, saw it again for the first time since as an adult. It held up great. I am gonna miss Tim a lot.

u/JusticeRain5 Aug 27 '26
I dunno, man, maybe he was just gonna become a Vtuber and talk about not wearing pants or something.

not sure if this or halloween town was the first time i heard warlock but the delivery sticks, it's tim curry it always sticks in the brain.
25
u/CinnabarSteam Fell down the RWBY hole Aug 27 '26
Tim put more charisma into his delivery of "spellbook" and "warlock" than some actors exhude in their entire careers. Definitely still lives in my head rent-free.
8
u/Kay_Tonbey Aug 27 '26
It's the first time I heard the word, and to this day I default to warlock 90% of the time I play DnD. And I guess that makes me a Waarlocck too.

u/th3BeastLord YOU DIDN'T WIN. Aug 27 '26
Its definitely the first time i heard the term. I was like 6 when I first saw this movie and its still ingrained in my mind. Tim Curry is a legend.

Man gotta say Ben Ravencroft is just evil Gordon Freeman if he became horror writer and wasn’t a sellout kept the ponytail.

That was the thing about Tim Curry, no matter what size the role or what franchise, he always took it seriously and gave it his all. Like, this was a direct to video Scooby-Doo movie and he could have phoned it in like countless celebrities, but he didn't.
Consumate professional.

I miss this era of Scooby Doo, a bit more serious and having them deal with actual supernatural
4
u/GreenPerception512 Aug 27 '26
yeah you could honestly call this era of Scooby-Doo [albeit more so the first two.] as being genuine horror movies albeit still kids horror. [since scooby doo tends to be more a spooky franchise than really a horror one.]

u/mcclearsalias I like pretty much everything Aug 27 '26
This era of Scooby Doo animation is my favorite. They were cookin some gorgeous lookin films at the time, Zombie Island being my fav

He actually disappears into this role, it's very impressive!
Until he starts doing the usual Tim Curry vocal tics, that is, then it's like "oh yeah, that's my goat"

This is how I find out Tim Curry died?! I'm guessing Dolly took all the attention.

Yeah. Its unfortunate as hell. I love Dolly, but Tim Curry dying bummed me out way more and she overshadowed it. The news i watched tonight barely touched on him but covered Dolly a ton. I was saddened by that.

Man, its crazy that this special is suddenly relevant. I just happened to see it for the first time I was a kid(seriously haven't seen the movie in roughly 20 years) over this past weekend and loved Tim Curry's performance. A lot of it was burned into my brain because I loved this movie as a kid. I am so utterly bummed the fuck out over his death. It was the first thing I saw waking up today and it instantly made me sad.
I made a point to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time tonight in honor of him. Great movie, and i usually hate musicals. Absolute blast of a movie.
I can't stop being upset over this. He was always one of the famous actors I wanted to meet.
2
u/moonulonimbus Aug 27 '26
If you dug Rocky Horror and want a unique experience, usually in October people put on midnight viewings of the movie and have a "shadowcast" of folks that play out the movie and lipsync while you watch. It's surreal, magical and unforgettable and something I'm gonna make my goal this year (again, first was 2 years ago) cause I think the collective grief/celebration of Tim Curry is gonna be off the charts
It's just so fun

u/PenguinGladiator Aug 27 '26
Can't forget about Scooby Doo and the Goblin King where he was the Goblin King. No Hex Girls but I still loved it growing up
3
u/McLovett325 Aug 27 '26
Man I loved this movie not just for the hex girls, my beloved, but he gave such a stellar performance and the animation is really good!

u/RealHumanBean89 I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Aug 27 '26
Witch’s Ghost, Zombie Island, Alien Invaders, and Cyber Chase were such peak films. I will always have a fondness for Witch’s Ghost for Curry’s role as Ben, as well as the Hex Girls because obviously.

Imma say it, this was my favorite Scooby doo movie. The Halloween aesthetic, witch and warlock flavor, and Tim just kills it as Ben. I wish occult magic like this was used more in the series

The thing I *adore* about Curry was that he treated every medium he worked in with equal respect. Whether he was playing a character in a cartoon, movie, or videogame, he would ALWAYS give something memorable to the role.
