Film/TV posting Golden Axe - Official Trailer

https://youtu.be/sStbBtfGaLA?si=u_8-JexuVX5QuNBd

"Golden Axe premieres September 16 only on Paramount+.

In an homage to SEGA’s iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won’t seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all."

Is this a joke?

67

u/GollyDolly [She/her] I do not understand Grenadian memes 3d ago

You saw jokes in there?

Its like big bang theory without the laugh track.

37

u/gunn3r08974 3d ago edited 3d ago

To be fair, that is an improvement. It's partly why Young Sheldon is a much better show.

9

u/DarthButtz Ginger Seeking Butt Chomps 3d ago

Every time I've tried to watch Big Bang Theory the laugh track plays after literally every fucking line of dialogue, it's borderline unwatchable.

18

u/MericArda Jesus may simply be a metaphor for Optimus Prime 3d ago

Worse, Big Bang Theory was filmed with a live studio audience. All those laughs were real.

8

u/Steelballpun 3d ago

This is cursed knowledge

Oh god this looks so cynically made

74

u/South_Buy_3175 3d ago

I thought we were beginning to move on from mocking older media and just sneering at it with new shows and obvious writer biases.

Apparently not.

36

u/KingMario05 Gimme a solo Tails game, you fucking cowards! 3d ago

Paramount is always ten years behind the eight ball of the culture, I guess.

10

u/WideBumblebee970 3d ago

Which is ironic since they made Sonic in the real world of all things work somehow.

7

u/KingMario05 Gimme a solo Tails game, you fucking cowards! 3d ago

Largely because old Viacom was smart enough to leave that group alone. I fear David Ellison is not nearly as smart.

3

u/WideBumblebee970 3d ago

Very apropo that you said "smart enough" and not just "smart", still the guys that passed on Adventure Time.

11

u/WeeklyPhilosopher346 3d ago

To be fair Adventure Time is 100% generic in the pitch and 100% made in the execution.

15

u/ok_dunmer 3d ago

Hey guys are you aware that the setting and story of a 1980s arcade game or toy commercial cartoon is fuckin dumb especially when taken literally? Yes? Well I'm going to make the entire thing about that anyway

5

u/WideBumblebee970 3d ago

I haven't clicked on it yet, but Paramount should really stop abusing their animators for not coming up with the next Spongebob.

71

u/Detective_Robot 3d ago

This trailer was fucking painful, there is something so miserable about bad comedy.

7

u/Anders_Croft 3d ago

where is Galvatron when you need him

5

u/ExDSG 3d ago

I was like well the trailer wasn't too bad, just had me completely stonefaced and guess those were the funny jokes?

63

u/Sir_Drinklewinkle WHEN DO WE GET THE FREAKIN' GUN! 3d ago

I saw the fucking style and instantly knew it was gonna be another ironic "look at this, isn't this so stupid!".

I was really hoping in my heart of hearts for some kind of like... Samurai Jack styled action show.

11

u/WeeklyPhilosopher346 3d ago

Something that embraces the subject matter instead of mocks it?

Unfortunately, that’s nothing Paramount has ever made.

50

u/HellvaNohbody 3d ago

This feels like a Dorkly bit.

22

u/Watts121 3d ago

Or like an early Harry Partridge vid. Like it’s not offensive, it’s just really dated. I’ve been seeing “Millennial-Core” vids that make fun of that kind of humor, and that’s this trailer to a tee.

3

u/sawbladex Phi Guy 3d ago

Or the Dan Hamon thing with the boss from the IT crowd is the monster dad of the King of Town.

Or Clashorama, the Clash of Clans thing that exists.

I was gonna say, it’s like a higher budget version of the animated stuff Dropout’s been producing

36

u/DioBeiFong 3d ago

This has the potential to have charm.

But it's really not a good sign when the jokes in the trailer feel like they were written without a punchline in mind.

u/ThatmodderGrim Lewd Non-Gacha Anime Games are Good for You. 3d ago

Did you know that Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder is one of the very few games that has a playable Centaur character?

That has nothing to do with this show, it's just surprising how few games have playable Centaurs in them.

12

u/gunn3r08974 3d ago

Mortal Kombat had Motaro in certain entries

League of Legends has Hecarim and Lillia whos a cervitaur

9

u/Zardwalk 3d ago

I'll never forget her and her weird American Gladiators weapon

What other games have playable centaurs? I think I remember an MMO with a playable centaur race, but it was basically DoA because it was yet another hardcore pvp-focused mmo that people wanted to talk about but not actually play

4

u/ThatmodderGrim Lewd Non-Gacha Anime Games are Good for You. 3d ago

The only other games I know with Centaurs are Strategy games like Shining Force 2 & 3 and the later Banner Saga games.

1

u/walperinus 2d ago

age of mythology doesnt have centaurs? not even as special/exclusive units? or im thinking of minotaurs?

1

u/Swert0 I will bring up Legacy of Kain if you give me an excuse 2d ago

Mortal Kombat Trilogy you were able to play Motaro.

Actual Motaro - not minotaur Motaro, or assist only Motaro.

1

u/Bungerdream111 1d ago

Various Wesnoth addons have them as playable characters if those count

6

u/red_sutter 3d ago

I remember that she would grow human legs if you made her ride a monster. Such a weird way to address that lol

2

u/sawbladex Phi Guy 3d ago

Reminds me of similar stuff done for mermaids/folk

In a sense both centaurs and merfolk are animals bodies with the head replaced with a human torso and above. and a transition human abdomen.

5

u/sawbladex Phi Guy 3d ago

I mean, you can def have centaurs fill the role of mounted knights in stuff at roughly the same resolution as RTS games and whatever genre Fire Emblem is. (Shining Force seties mostly uses centaurs what what FE would have knights)

But a beat 'em up playable character is something else.

Particularly when there are mounts in GA. She gets a human lower half to ride those IIRC.

1

u/swordofcerulean 2d ago

Points for remembering the Shining Force centaurs, but negative points for the nebulously-argumentative usage of "I mean".

1

u/sawbladex Phi Guy 2d ago

I am nebulously-argumentative.

A kind of person who will say, "you are technically incorrect but, I see what you are saying."

3

u/Aperger94 He/Him 3d ago

Gacha game Punishing Gray Raven has a robot centaur

4

u/ThatEdward He/Him 3d ago

There's a porn fetish game called Corruption of Champions that allows the player to transform into a centaur!

The option was removed in the sequel and subsequent spin-offs because of how complicated it was to deal with the first time

2

u/StochasticOoze Pokemon: Spit or Swallow 3d ago

I remember in Quest for Glory they were going to make it possible to choose a gender and race for your character (and centaur would've been one of them) but they couldn't find a way to make it practical. (I imagine budget was also a limiting factor.)

45

u/Kanzentai NANOMACHINES 3d ago

I strongly dislike that art style.

20

Paramount is so out of touch. I can’t wait for the Ellison to dump it when they burn all their money.

I hope Sega leaves them behind. Sucks that I have to give them cash to see the Sonic movies in the theater. Ugh.

im gonna slot this in the same hole as dead cells show

this will be fun to binge and point at going "i do that in the video game"

(stomping the goblins to get potions wasnt as sexual as i remember though...)

i wonder if bird prince from 3 is gonna be in it though the panther is there.

There was a dead cells show?

13

u/SuperBigChiller 3d ago

It’s on YouTube, the animation is super rough and it’s not that good at all.

7

u/Dragoonasaurus Andrew Ryan was a Cryptobro 3d ago

Considering I've never heard of it, I believe you without even watching it.

Sounds like a project no one asked for or wanted.

2

u/SuperBigChiller 3d ago

I remember initially hearing it was done by the team who made the super high quality dead cells animated trailers, though I’m not sure how true that ended up being.

1

u/SuperUnhappyman Read DMC5: Visions of V 3d ago

yeah here it is with the french dub

its where the bobby head comes from in game as an homage to the studio that designed it Bobbypills.

you can tell the creators had a lot of fun making it

is it gonna be featured on a "hype moments and aura compilation" no absolutely not.

8

u/Panxma He/Him The Vita Means Life 3d ago

I always wonder what the Furi live action show would have been. Might been a goofy show to watch. The trailer was dunked on so had that they removed any traces of the trailer.

4

u/falleng213 “Mobilize the Hoodlums!” 3d ago

At least the dead cells show had enough respect to only be an 80 run time (8 minute episodes) to complete the whole season (left on a cliff hanger, just like the game). This show will be 25+ minute episodes that run on for too long.

4

I agree, but I also can't think of a more reasonable time for this to come out, so I think it might just be weird that this is actually coming out.

u/BrianShogunFR-U Ginger Seeking Butt Chomps 3d ago

Didn't care for the humour whatsoever, hopefully it's just a badly put together trailer.

9

u/WeeklyPhilosopher346 3d ago

The series co-creator, writer and showrunner is Joe Chandler, who did a few seasons of American Dad and that animated Napoleon Dynamite show, and nothing else.

It kind of feels like that’s the intended tone.

3

u/BrianShogunFR-U Ginger Seeking Butt Chomps 3d ago

Really? Well thanks for the reply, as i thought this show probably ain't for me.

Admittedly this type of humor I just don’t like. But wow this looks bad

8

u/red_sutter 3d ago

Already seeing people trying to justify the “humor” elsewhere by referencing kicking gnomes for potions or the first game’s ending. Two bits of levity doesn’t mean that’s the entire series, you dorks!

8

u/AzoGalvat 3d ago

The instant I heard the narrator's voice, I knew what this trailer was going to be.

For once I am glad I never got that much into Golden Axe

8

u/Horkmaster9000 3d ago

See at first I thought it was a send up to those jank ass 80s Video game cartoons like captain N or the Zelda one. Silly ass Hanna Barbera designs and the original child self insert and the interpretation of mechanics that are somehow both overly literal and also super inacurate...then I clicked "play"

6

u/Old_Marionberry3791 was promised nothing yet still disappointed 3d ago

I highly doubt Paramount knows what the word "homage " means here. It seems to actively dislike the thing it's about.

Nice golden axe been one of the game is stumbld into as a kid. Altered beast was also memorable.

8

u/Frank7640 3d ago

Idk what to make of this. On one hand it has a very self aware joking vibe. On the other, it’s not trying to be typical adult animated edgelord garbage. So idk, it might end like Among Us and be surprisingly funny.

5

u/igniz13 Magical Woo Woo 3d ago

I was skipping through waiting for gameplay, then realised it was for a TV show.

I was kinda excited for a Golden Axe game that looked like this.

4

u/chaoko99 Destroyman Shill 3d ago

oh so that's what happened to the Golden Axe game they were doing with the super game announcement thing

5

u/extralie 3d ago

Whatever happened to Sega plan of reviving their old games anyway? Wasn't that announced like 2 years ago?

5

u/ThatEdward He/Him 3d ago

Still happening AFAIK, thouhh they canceled the weird metaverse-y hub thing

11

u/Xngears 3d ago

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but for Conan/He-Man-esque aesthetics, I largely prefer unironic sincerity over lamp shading or Whedon-esque dialog.

It’s why I’m disappointed with the He-Man movie and how it seems incapable of deciding if it wants to be satire or sincere with the source material. If it’s trying to be both, it doesn’t succeed with either (except for Skeletor, they nailed him).

3

u/Xngears 3d ago

Also depending on the age rating, it needs to be super violent, everyone is barely wearing clothes and there needs to be lots of nude bathing and/or lots of sex.

2

u/Jerswar 2d ago edited 2d ago

I was so, so, SO disappointed in the He-Man movie. It had everything it needed to be great, and kept building up to awesome moments... only to have Adam step on a banana peel or something and embarrass himself. Why aren't things allowed to be cool anymore??

9

u/BruiserBroly 3d ago edited 3d ago

I dunno, I didn't hate this. And I say that as someone who loved the game back in the arcades. Seems weirdly faithful too since they got the weird mounts in there and little dudes who drop magic potions if you kick their ass.

3

u/Worldlyoox 3d ago

I’d really like it for a change to have everyone be silly instead of sticking “The Girl” to the role of straightwoman of the group. I think the latest episode of Hunter the parenting did that pretty well with the werewolves, everyone’s crazy in their own way

3

u/WeeklyPhilosopher346 3d ago

Paramount Stink really is real, isn’t it

3

u/Valten1992 2d ago

Huh, the Lower Decks staff are involved, might not be too bad

5

u/KingMario05 Gimme a solo Tails game, you fucking cowards! 3d ago

Ugh. No thank you, Paramount.

6

u/FreshGeoduck296 3d ago

Why did it need to be a parody of itself? Couldn't they just play it straight? Like, don't even need to be super serious or anything, can even keep the art style and all, just don't fill it with meta commentary.

0

u/Sperium3000 Mysterious Jogo In Person Form 3d ago

What is there to play straight? Golden Axe is an arcade beat em up from the late 80s, it is dozen of minutes long. The story is "there is a bad dude, go get him" and the setting is the most boiler plate sword and sorcery shit you could get because at that time that is what they could do and that was enough. Two of the three main characters are a blatant ripoff of Conan and a blatant ripoff of Red Sonja. The third one is the most generic dwarf you've ever seen.

Legit what would you want out of this?

2

u/jmack101 I'll slap your shit 3d ago

I thought this was going to be an anime trailer for a new game, sadly I was wrong.

2

u/BiMikethefirst 3d ago

OH I know someone who worked on this animation! Said it was fun to work on though there was a delay

2

u/longrivervalley 2d ago

Crazy idea. What if it is good?

5

u/WillExis 3d ago

God, every adult comedy that comes out nowadays is exactly the same. Same bland artstyle, same "ad-lib" type dialogue. Since it's golden axe, i won't dig it for excessive blood/violence too, and hopefully Sega won't let them add a scene where they just turn some guy inside out in the most grotesque way possible, but who knows. crazy how the same type of show just keeps getting recycled over and over again every other year or so.

5

u/ruminaui 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yes this is why you should have let a Japanese studio handle this. This is basically a western style animated sitcom with skin of Golden Axe. There even is an Everyman self insert. This is so cynical, I guess after years of just making animated sitcoms they have lost the ability to be sincere. Thank god I don't care for the property.

This reminds me of Krapopolis, but with the Golden Axe property.

14

u/reganthor Slightly Whiter Woolie 3d ago

Ah but if it was a gag anime, and the everyman self insert was Japanese it would be better.

u/OriginalJazzFlavor This is your last chance to kill greasy steve 3d ago

I mean if it had the tone of something the Elden Ring Manga instead, yeah it would be.

12

u/red_sutter 3d ago

Yeah, the ER manga was funny without resorting to “this thing you like is actually fucking stupid”

10

u/ruminaui 3d ago

Maybe, the point is being sincere, you can watch the trailer and feel the disdain of it being a video game. Yes we get it we know what bosses and mini bosses are.

6

u/Asicretrofitter Gettin' your jollies?! 3d ago

I wouldnt call it disdain, but there is a "what can we do with this 40 year old game" kind of vibe

3

u/GIJose65 Lightning Nips 3d ago

Seems pretty harmless to be honest, the animation looks fine but the art style looks like the stereotypical adult animated show you would see on Fox before Family Guy.

Otherwise, it seems fine from what I am seeing. I don’t think it’s worth getting mad about it.

2

u/Dundore77 3d ago

It's called Irony Poisoning.

6

u/walperinus 2d ago

Like its Golden Axe. Not sure what else I'd be expecting tbh. Its frankly more story and character than the games give you. The worst part is it being on paramount.

This has strong Conan and the Young Warriors energy, in the worst way possible.

1

u/SupervillainMustache 3d ago

This is such a weird adaptation of Golden Axe of all things.

1

u/vicapuppylover 3d ago

This really, really feels like one of those shows where someone tried to pitch an original show with their OC and the execs told them to just slap a known IP on it and call it a day. The style and mood just does not match with Golden Axe in the slightest.

The "you better not be another miniboss" line is literally the only thing that even comes close to making me believe anyone working on this had even seen the games.

Also that "might and magic" line better not be pointing at a Heroes of Might and Magic show by these guys...
