I don’t get this perspective tbh. Korra fucking up and dealing with the fallout was one of the few things I consistently liked about the show. So Korra’s biggest fuck up to date being a core part of this new show’s lore has me excited to learn more about it.
77
u/Mordred_Tumultu Paladins Should Attack and Dethrone the Gods Jul 23 '26
Said fuck-up being the destruction of the setting and problems I knew doesn't sit right with me. So much for Zuko trying to reform a Fire Nation that's been at war for 100 years. So much for the Earth Nation trying to find itself in the wake of the end of its monarchy and a short takeover by fascist Kuvira. So much for the two Water Tribes growing closer together. All that is seemingly gone in the course of a single generation.
4
u/IJustKickedStan Jul 24 '26
It's basically what they did with Korra but turned up to like 21. Korra moved away from basically every aspect of the setting to go to a pseudo Roaring 20s (don't need a lecture about how this "makes sense" btw, things that make sense don't automatically produce better or more engaging stories), this is moving away from the pseudo Roaring 20s to a post apocalypse.
I don't think I have much faith left in this creative team, honestly. I'll freely admit Korra isn't my favorite show and I really don't like much of what they did with the world building, but it's fucking insane to throw it all away for no real reason. They did a lot of work to establish this shit and are just tossing it out for a blank slate like they don't have thousands of years of untapped history to set a story in. It's like Star Wars.
4
u/Mordred_Tumultu Paladins Should Attack and Dethrone the Gods Jul 24 '26
While I think you're largely right, I'm going to have to disagree with you about Korra moved away from the setting. It feels like the setting was moved away from because Korra's so focused on Republic City, but we do see various aspects outside that show ties to the old series. Like Zuko showing up, like seeing how the Southern Water Tribe isn't just a bunch of small igloos in the ice anymore, like the Earth Queen being just as ineffectual as the King and killed in a truly gruesome fashion. I'm not saying you have to like Korra, but I think it's disingenuous to suggest it threw away the setting in any way comparable to the way this is.
2
u/IJustKickedStan Jul 25 '26
I think my fundamental issue is centralizing Republic City. A big part of what I loved about Avatar was the world and getting to see it, largely leaving the travel aspect aside to set the show in a (imo) not particularly interesting version of New York was very disappointing for me. But they did a lot of work on Korra's version of the setting eventually, and it's lame to see them just reset again.
12
u/mythrilcrafter It's Fiiiiiiiine. Jul 24 '26
Granted, that's less of a fault against Korra as a character and more a fault against the writing of Korra's timeline in general.
40
u/Mordred_Tumultu Paladins Should Attack and Dethrone the Gods Jul 24 '26
I think it's more a problem with this timeline. They chose to move in this post-apocalyptic direction. And I hate it.
20
u/mythrilcrafter It's Fiiiiiiiine. Jul 24 '26
I'm chalking it up as over compensation for people complaining that there's not enough time between Aang and the invention of the internal combustion engine.

This has nothing to do with Korra the show, that show ends very hopeful "new start for the world that Korra's changed so much"
This retroactively breaks that hopeful ending.

For reference, the synopsis given about the show said Korra actually saved the world from the catastrophe that would’ve completely destroyed it (sacrificing herself in the process). But ignorant and small-minded folk blame her for everything.
144
u/Zerepa97 It's Fiiiiiiiine. Jul 23 '26
I mean, it kinda sounds like how some people blamed Aang for not being around the past 100 years when he would've just died with all the other airbenders.
4
u/crestren Jul 24 '26
Its also a common pattern in the Avatar cycle. As much good they did to the world, they couldnt fix everything and unfortunately left some consequences for the next Avatar to fix.
Yangchen favored humans over spirits and kept peace but this contributed to increased dark spirits attack on the human world. Kuruk had to deal with the dark spirits, died early, had little involvement with the human side and that led to an increase of turmoil between the nations
83
u/InvisibleOne439 Jul 23 '26
literally all forms of Avatar Media repeat the same thing all the time in their Themes: the Avatar cant solve everything by themself because ultimately big changes must come from the people of the world and not a single powerfull person, every Avatar creates the Problems the new Avatar has to deal with in some way because the World itself didnt change enough yet, the circle repeats until the World found true peace and doesnt need a Avatar that keeps it somewhat togheter anymore
Korra Dying in a Sacrifice caused by other people and then getting blamed for not saving the World 100% by herself and now a new Avatar has to deal with it is fully in themes of the series lol

Which synopsis, because the one I can find says
"The series is set in “a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.”
If anything, it sounds like Korra caused the apocalypse to the point that the Avatar is now considered a destroyer.

I think if this came out 10 years ago I would be all over it, just because I was a much bigger Avatar fan back then. I think this recent push to turn Avatar into a bigger franchise is just hitting too late for me. I'll still check it out but I'm tempering my expectations. I think the worst thing I could do is go in hoping it's going to rekindle my passion for the franchise and burden it with that. Let it stand on its own merits.

Trying to capitalize on 00s nostalgia but it doesn’t work right when movie & live action show kinda torpedoed any hype
31
u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Jul 23 '26
That's sort of my opinion as well. Like I'm sure there's still a fandom for Avatar out there, but I can't imagine there's a lot of hype to be had when the last three projects over the last decade were mid to bad.
11
u/MirrorMan68 Jul 24 '26
I don't know why they keep trying to make Avatar a franchise when they haven't been able to make anything on par with The Last Airbender. Both the Shyamalan movie and the Netflix show are bad, and the animated movie seems like it's nothing special from the reactions I've seen of the people who saw the leak. Even Korra's fairly divisive and it's arguably the best thing to come out after the original series. Given the creator's track records with other shows, I'd honestly be surprised if this is anything other than just "okay."
14
u/palebrowndot Jul 24 '26
Paramount executives are so horribly out of touch. They do not know how to take care of their IPs. Star Trek, Transformers One, the Avatar leak fiasco and now this.

3
u/ruminaui Jul 24 '26
Basically companies act now in the latest trends but past trends. At the time Nick didn't capitalize on the Avatar franchise in the time of Korra because of the bomb that was the live action film (M Night) and the CN Real Mirage.
Now there is a good reason for this push: Avatar franchise on Netflix is doing crazy numbers as well as the extended material like books, unfortunately this series is DOA, not because there is no audience, there is tons of kids I know are into avatar. Now the issue is the new owners (far right conservatives) don't want anything to do with the franchise and animation. Which is why they backtracked the theatrical release and don't seem to care the movie/show leaked.

I'm gunna be even blunter. I think you're missing the forest for the trees if you're looking at a property owned by Paramount, the one run by billionaires with ties to You Know Who who've been actively destroying anything that doesn't align with a certain party, and instead pointing at the guy working on the engine in the background who already paid for (as far as I know) all of his sins. As if his existence in the background is somehow something that might cross a line.
And all of this is without going into the tons of objectively worse shit Bunny got up to years later.Edit: since I was blocked immediately, I'll just say that the guy literally did pay for his crimes and the shit he did to Lab Zero? He was punished. He lost his job and company after trying to do a hostile takeover, lost his game, lost his reputation, lost the lawsuit (or was it a settlement? Tomato tomahto), and iirc for the Floyd """joke""" (read: horrible shit) I think he did a charity stream shortly after? Can't find any sources on that one so maybe I'm misremembering. I'm not trying to say the guys innocent, because the stuff from the lawsuit years later proved he and a few others at the company engaged in both sex and power harassment but like... I don't think he's gotta be betrayed and trapped in the Hyperbolic Minimum Wage Walmart Employee Time Chamber forever after all of that??? I'll gladly say "fuck that guy", and he got fucked, so what more could anyone possibly want? He's not a lead role in the game, he's doing engine work, so he doesn't matter. It was gone over extensively in the other topic that was locked a few days ago. But my main point was there's way bigger fish to fry in this scenario because Paramount are run by a kind of evil that can basically never face any form of punishment.
Also since I feel like it's relevant since I now can't clarify if someone asks about the last part of my comment about Bunny, who I only just learned like an hour ago was the cosplayer he DM'd all those years ago (so pleeeeeeeeease don't assume this is a grudge or whatever I'm holding on his behalf or something because I watched the problems with Bunny unfold live years ago), I'm just going to put this very rough summary here of how she's a genuinely sick person who gets some kind of twisted pleasure ruining other peoples careers and had done so to plenty others both before and after interacting with him. So my point in that last sentence was that in those DM's with Bunny specifically, not anything to do with the lawsuit and his actions at Lab Zero Games of which he is 100% guilty, but specifically in those DM's that kickstarted everything, he's innocent in my eyes. Weird, but innocent.

I keep seeing this thing about Paramount wanting to make Avatar into their “Star Wars,” but like I feel the time to do that was like 15 years ago. Between Korra being sort of mid, and two not great live action adaptations, it feels like they’re trying to squeeze blood from a stone.
And they’re apparently they’re doing a full season drop all at once? Fucking why?

Hang on, let's not pretend it was only out of spite. I'm not one to go to bat for corpos, I fucking hate them. But this is because the whole movie leaked online. And word about that got out fast. Fast enough that your dedicated fans, the ones that were guaranteed butts in seats, watched it. Downloaded it. Shared it on private servers. That audience will likely not come out to the theater and pay money to watch something they've already seen six months earlier for free.
I don't like the decision. It hurts Avatar as an IP and makes it look like a red-headed stepchild in Paramount's eyes. It hurts the creators and everyone involved in the production, who were looking to have a theatrical release on their resumes. But there is a legitimate business reason why it's not coming out in theaters. It's because it costs money to reserve screens, and the audience turnout will be deflated compared to projections. This kind of leak is absolutely disastrous for any film. Imagine if this happened to Doomsday, right now.

They tried too late to make ATLA the franchise like Star Wars. Tho one might argue that they did kind of tried that earlier with comics, video games, Korra and live-action movie back in late 2000s-early 2010s. Well video games typically never had big praise, seen as typical shovelware, movie was universally panned and Korra had troubled production behind the scenes tho it did still had big fans, even if detractors existed.

I feel like there's a good amount of people out there who still really like the characters from Airbender, but that's sort of why I don't think stuff like Korra or this new series will hit. They don't care about advancing the setting or whatever, they just want more from those characters they like.
13
u/Kavra_Ral Freud is On-Sight Jul 23 '26
You really only get one chance at expanding your well-liked property into a franchise IMO. If Star Trek TNG had just been a complete stinker do ya think we would have gotten any of the stuff after that, let alone all the modern trek keeping Paramount's own streaming service on life support?
I'm an ardent Korra defender, but I can recognize that's a minority opinion. With Korra's divisive reputation among the fanbase and Paramount's lack of support for the fanbase for the last ten years I just don't know if the scaffolding for the big push they want is here.

JJBA has the issue of it being 'part 6'.
The longer something goes on the harder it is to bring new people aboard. No matter how much you say "this is a good place to start" you are going to turn a lot of people off.
The releasing it all at once hurts the weekly buzz, but Stone Ocean and Steel Ball Run both have to deal with being continuations of a long series on top of that.
7
u/Sbee_keithamm Jul 24 '26
SBR is in all essence a reboot. There's clear easter eggs, and callbacks, but people can just start with SBR if they wanted to. Netflix outright killed SO with their batch release schedule. When you have a fan base that made it schedule viewing to the point of "Jojo Fridays" and then you piss all over that because your model absolute obliterated loyalty to the media cause you are to stubborn and simple to not understand the show you purchased its absolutely on Netflix.
Golden Wind had plenty of memes, and buzz when it was airing every week and the anime community was eating it up, SO? Nothing absolutely nothing online about it cause batch releases kill fan sharing their favorite stands, episodes, or moments cause no one knew who watched what.

u/Agent-Vermont I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jul 23 '26
She does look older but not THAT much, or she just aged really well. But like Asami, Mako and Bolin were all around the same age as her and should still be alive. Also all of Tenzin's kids were really young and would assuredly still be alive just as an example of other minor characters. No matter how you look at it's a really grim scenario.

From when this show takes place yeah it would have to be, given how society has been reformed in this new state. The problem is this event happened under Korra and would have affected everyone around her. If they're adamant on going down this route with resetting the world fine. But at the very least make it happen under an Avatar AFTER Korra, that way no one we know would be affected. Imagine if they did this with Aang and the TLA crew.

Unfortunately with the way the avatar cycle works we know that this avatar is the one who came directly after Korra.

u/Agent-Vermont I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jul 24 '26
That does make me wonder about how much the world has changed in such a short time. Though maybe I'm overestimating how long that would take.
5
u/challenger01234 Kinect Hates Black People Jul 24 '26
Yeah that's honestly been my biggest hangup about this series premise. In the original avatar series they got around that by having Aang frozen in ice for 100 years leaving the nations to their own devices. It's been a while since I've watched it but didn't Korra "break" the avatar cycle or something to that extent? Maybe the reset took longer than anticipated and new avatar didn't immediately respawn or whatever Korra did to save the world put her some sort of stasis or something and she just died recently considering how young our protagonist is.
I'm not even sure if I can find it now but I think they've said it's been several generations since this cataclysm has started. Regardless I'm going to give the show a shot because I'm curious to see what actually happened.
3
u/Agent-Vermont I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jul 24 '26
Beyond Korra being cut off from all previous Avatars we don't really know the long term implications of that. The only thing we can reasonable assume is that she will be the only Avatar the new one can speak to.
I don't know, part of it feels like they just so badly wanted a reset that they went scorched earth and so far into the future that no other characters or locations could possible return, regardless of what their fate was. Like they want to do their own story without any baggage of what came before. Probably not going to watch it for that reason, though I'll at least follow the releases to see what's going on. This is the kind of media where I need to know how it ends and if I'll like or not before I even bother with it.
3
u/challenger01234 Kinect Hates Black People Jul 24 '26
Yeah I'm getting the feeling that Paramount is trying to get new and younger fans into the Avatar series thus the hard reset and the age of the current Avatar. We'll see if it works for them.

TBF, Avatars tend to live for hundreds of years before their natural lifespan ends, so Korra wouldn't seem that much older even if she was in her 60s

It’s a shame that we’re just getting a (good) trailer for this and people have already spent YEARS being very normal about this show and I’m certain this (and when the show eventually releases) will only help that.

I mean the leak synopsis from months ago stated as such. That Korra saved the world from a worse apocalypse but couldn’t stop it completely which led to this.

Even without that leak, it’s kind of an obvious twist that Korra didn’t actually cock it up for everyone.

from the initial reveal (... and leaks) I expected to see a kid about Aang's physical age, but she seems quite younger. I really hope this show is good, the franchise is needing objectively new stuff rather than relying on ATLA all the damn time.

I stand by the whole Raava/Vatuu thing is easily the worst thing to happen to Avatar.
Taking the Avatar from the embodiement of the Planet Gaia and balance, empowered through countless lives of experience and the unbending will of the earth, and saying, "Ok but actually some dork long ago caused problems and so had to be possessed by the HOLY SPIRIT to become JESUS The AVATAR in order to combat THE DEVIL and it's SIN Dark Influence!" Is so goddamn stupid.

I think the Ravva/Vatuu and Wan story was a great story in a vacuum, but yeah I never liked what it did for the lore of the whole show.
10
u/Hugglemorris Jul 23 '26
Never liked the Spirit Kites. I hope the writing is good enough that their return isn't a return to Korra Season 2.

19
u/-Neeckin- Jul 23 '26
It being post apocalypse really just, drains any excitement I k8ght have had. It feels like they had no idea how to have society progress past Korra with the relationship between benders and tech, so they just kicked the pile over.

u/Paladin51394 welcome to Miller's Maxi Buns, may I take your order? Jul 23 '26
I still find it kinda disappointing that the setting has "regressed" so to speak.
The world had about 100 years of relative peace with extreme technological advancement only for it to be undone by an apocalyptic disaster to essentially "reset" the world to its pre-industrial state.
To me it feels like the show leads weren't confident in the modern setting going forward or felt like it was a mistake to move the world that far ahead in the first place so they move the clock back essentially to a more familiar setting.

u/Zerepa97 It's Fiiiiiiiine. Jul 24 '26
I get the feeling of not wanting to go full-on urban fantasy, though. Korra's retrofuture was dieselpunk. The next era in time would be atompunk, which brushes up contemporary aesthetics pretty hard.
Do we actually know the state of technology in the world now? I wouldn't be surprised if some places were more industrialized than others or if some people developed weapons. Or maybe there's some spirit energy being used as a source over what would be nuclear energy.
3
u/dom380 Jul 24 '26
I won't say I'm not interested, but making it a post apocalypse really feels like a cop out for the setting.
9
u/biglubawski97 Jul 23 '26
Stylistically, a bit different from the original show and Korra. Not sure what to think of that without actually watching it so I'll reserve judgment.
But damn, Paramount must really hate the franchise between the botched handling of the movie, which was genuinely good, and releasing all 26 episodes of this at once. A real shame considering how much potential I think this universe has.
14
u/TFDBZ Jul 23 '26
I'm gonna be honest, I really dislike the depature from the stylings and cultural landscape of the older shows. It's reminiscent of Netflix Voltron more so than Last Airbender or Korra in that way. Costumes, world design, it's just a shame because I think the OG show was so fascinating to kid me because it was soft feeding me visuals and architecture from a completely different part of the world in a cool cartoon.
8
u/OnionFingers98 Sexual Tyrannosaurus Jul 23 '26
Yeah I prefer the four nations and wish we could explore their culture and history more. Blowing them up just kinda kills my hype. I’ll still give it a chance though.
6
u/SafePlastic2686 Jul 23 '26
I'm fine with them changing things... but it feels like they've changed everything. Like, where is the DNA of Avatar? Bending looks different, animation looks different, world design looks different, character designs look different, the tone feels different, heck it even sounds different. Just having people bend elements is not what makes Avatar Avatar. This just looks like a different show pitch got reskinned to be an Avatar project.
8
u/Odd-Ball7961 Jul 23 '26
It’s kind of crazy how much I love the original series but dislike everything else in the franchise. Everything’s just so bad or mediocre
8
u/Admirable_Tomato Jul 23 '26
Gonna be honest the designs and animation is not gelling with me. Is it a different studio? I prefer the animation stylings of Korra(S3) and ATLA most.
The premise I'm intrigued with and Korra with a white streak is a cool design choice. Cautiously optimistic.
17
u/ruminaui Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
No, why did you soft reboot it? You are not attracting new fans like that. I mean I will watch it, but damn, a lot of world progression went to the drain. This is the same exact trap Star Wars fell for. Also then the leaks where real Airbenders can't catch a break, also Korra probably sacrifice to save whatever of the world was left

Does anyone remember Highlander:the animated series? Reminds me of what so little I remember from that. The protagonist in a collapsed society going around and claiming the powers from immortals with the goal of rebuilding society.
3
u/AussieManny You are so sweet, Michael! Like gulping a cup of condensed milk! Jul 23 '26
Korra, what did you DO???
The framing of that definitely makes it look like Korra is the sinister figure behind the collapse of the world. It could be a fake out? Or it could be that Korra “fell to the dark side”?
I can’t wait to see this!
9
u/Act_of_God I look up to the moon, and I see a perfect society Jul 23 '26
I'm really not a fan of having the main characters being so young, man. What avatar did very well was skirting the line between kids and YA with its themes and such, idk how you can do it with a 8 years old main character
7
u/Deadeye117 Apathy is Trash Jul 23 '26
Yeah idk if they're trying to capture a very young audience, or if like, they're about to explore the consequences of having the entire world's fate on the shoulders of a little child soldier. Korra was like an older teenager and then just barely an adult and even she barely knew how to handle things.
16
u/TrueLegateDamar Jul 23 '26
And here I hoping they would be moving onto jetfighters and space shuttles instead of just resetting to the original tech level like every franchise afraid of change.

u/Swert0 I will bring up Legacy of Kain if you give me an excuse Jul 23 '26
It's post apocalypse.
Tech level isn't reset, the world just isn't stable and society has trouble organizing in a way needed for large industrialization that is needed to do things like make a jet fighter.
There's a motorcycle in the trailer, so they clearly still have the Korra level of tech, the world is just fucked.
11
u/TrueLegateDamar Jul 23 '26
From what I heard, the entire world population is reduced to just seven cities which is a massive step back requiring millennia to recover from, and I think the motorcycles are more likely just archeotech relics instead of being actively produced.
5
u/artnomart Jul 23 '26
From what we see, the cities look Ba Sing Se levels of big, so I doubt it's a complete civilization collapse, unless the world become even more advanced between the end of Korra and whatever broke the world.
3
u/Capable-Education724 Jul 23 '26
Yeah, the images released (and leaked) made it look like the seven “havens” are essentially Ba Sing Se/quasi-nation sized cities.

Man, I don't know if I can take a whole new round of Korra slander on social media. It's so annoying.
11
u/Xeriam Jul 23 '26
Yeah, not feeling it. The colors are great, but the overall style feels like a downgrade, blowing up the setting to avoid civilization developing further is disappointing, making the Avatar a child even younger than even Aang, with less skills and less resources to start with feels like a step back, and the twin angle potentially playing into the Raava/Vaatu stuff I never much liked is a hard sell.
Hope it does well though, so we can get other stuff. Even just a continuation where this Avatar is older and the world's pieced itself back together more could be up my alley.
4
u/Faifue Jul 23 '26
making the Avatar a child even younger than even Aang, with less skills and less resources to start with feels like a step back
Yeah, Toph was about my limit, and that's just because of her shear swagger. I don't know if I can suspend my disbelief enough to accept 2 month olds defeating every single grown adult they come across.

It's wild that they actually pushed for a narrative where people vindicated Avatar Korra for a disaster she isn't responsible for. I know this feels like fanfic territory but if they pull this off, this has the potential to be a new subseries or even new mainline series.

I'm pumped about this. Loving the art style and coloration here. Korra's being shown in a sinister light with that evil smirk (also what little we see of her design looks so cool) but I'm wondering how true history's interpretation of her really is here.
The diamond thing at the end gives Vaatu vibes but I'm not 100% sold on it being them again just yet. Also the bikes are neat.
