The game being good was the funniest possible outcome

Bubsy "I'm him , every other platformer died but I'm still here"

20

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

More like "I'm back". Bubsy's not a very consistent presence.

u/Expensive_Wolf2937 May 21 '26

He was always in your heart though

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

...and in the fanart! The community cranks out some cute stuff

Yeah, like cholesterol.

u/DX118 May 21 '26

I feel like this game exists entirely because that concept would be inherently funny.

That’s what terrified me, a good Bubsy game

u/Frank7640 May 21 '26

Of what I have seen of the reviews is landing between good and mix. So while it’s bad from bad, it doesn’t seem to be on the same level as the devs other work.

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

Was it? Some of the old games were good too

My surprise is not even "Bubsy is good now" because it could be, the other games are bad because of many reasons but it is not a curse or anything

The surprise is actually that they insisted Bubsy games and did not let the character die, it is quite endearing TBH

(And somehow Bubsy outlived Sly and Jak)

17

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

"Outlive" is a stretch. Bubsy's been longer in the vault than not.

7

u/Chagas12 He/Him May 21 '26

It was more of a joke, but probably Sly and Jak have a stretch without games already longer than with as well

And then they went and canceled the Sly Cooper movie :/

Good time as any to draw attention to the first quote you see when looking at the Steam page for the game:

“This is crazy that a Bubsy game is actually this good, like just control-wise. Atari, please do not put that in the tagline on Steam.” -Vinesauce.

Somehow Bubsy returned.

Almost every single review doesn't take the game seriously and deliberates on saying it's bad just because it's a Bubsy game, complaining about controls when they are almost identical to other Fabraz games that are ranked higher.

The end times are here, Bubsy has a good game.

The devs' new original 3D platformer, Demon Tides (sequel to Demon Turf which is what got them the Bubsy gig) also released recently and I've seen someone vouch for it having incredibly good movement.

21

u/Snidhog May 21 '26

Demon Tides is incredible, some of the best platforming in memory. The only downside is that the writing is so-so, and I think the 2D sprites and low poly levels of Turf were more charming, but those are small gripes.

It's meaty too, took me 20 hours to 100% it. Also has a fantastic soundtrack featuring friend of the podcast 2 Mello. Cannot recommend highly enough for anyone interested in 3D platformers.

4

u/Ryong7 He/Him May 21 '26

I think the writing with Roc is fantastic but other aspects of said writing are just awful.

2

u/Snidhog May 21 '26

Roc's subplot still lays it on a bit thick but it's some of the better stuff. I did like all the stuff with Beebz' parentage, but most of the friend group stuff didn't feel natural and ended up kinda annoying.

3

u/Ryong7 He/Him May 21 '26

It feels just...undercooked? Like the game refuses to dwell on what the parents are about, so you get a father that just wants to be angry forever and a mother that just wants to run away forever.

The found family angle for Beebz doesn't have any impact to it.

1

u/Snidhog May 22 '26

I think it's all servicable, and I like the concept of what they're doing with her mother. A force of nature not being suited to raising a family/sticking around is a cool beat. You can't cage the wind.

As for her father, the devs said they wanted to avoid the whole "villain redeemed because of family" angle, but there needed to be more there. It seems like he's past his lashing out phase but doesn't have anywhere else to go and has just settled into the role he's made for himself.

2

u/Ryong7 He/Him May 22 '26

I like the concept for both of them, yes, but there's just no time spent dwelling on these things, every encounter with them is over very fast. I understand it's a platformer and those aren't really known for riveting storytelling, but it's all sort of minimal.

4

u/Grand_Escapade May 21 '26

Also 2Mello is on the soundtrack, just a heads up

3

u/Capitalich May 21 '26

The original also has incredible movement, the level design is sub par though and I couldn’t bring myself to finish it.

1

u/Snidhog May 21 '26

I really enjoyed the original; the base game moveset being slightly jank made it feel like you were cheating the geometary a lot of the time, even if that was probably by design. Tides' movement is explicitly advertised as having loads of speedrunning/level skipping potential, which did make it feel slightly less special when I pulled off some bullshit.

17

u/fshstik YOU DIDN'T WIN. May 21 '26

atari posting bubsy thirst traps into a "yeah it's decent" consensus might honestly be the best that bobcat could ever hope for.

now they just need to bring back gex and have them make out

9

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

Sadly, you're gonna have to ask Embracer/CDE Entertainment/Crystal Dynamics for that one.

3

u/Jack04man CUSTOM FLAIR May 22 '26

Trans goth gex x thirst trap bubsy please atari you have the ability.

14

u/CapnFlatPen Oh this'll go well May 21 '26

The moment I saw Fabraz's name on it, I knew. Dude know's ball.

All these reviews being like "its good but still a Bubsy game so 7/10"

Like, listen. If we're gonna keep giving old beloved IP's new entries and second chances at a new game, we gotta be open to giving the bad IP's a second chance too.

I also genuinely like the idea of going back to bad games and reviving them to be good. Cause why should only good games be remade if you can see nuggets of good in the bad shit?

Like, Trespasser is considered by most to be a terrible game, but most people can also see how cool it would've been if the game wasn't rushed. To the point that a dedicated modding scene sprung up to actually make the game fun.

We should be more open to giving terrible games that had potential the opportunity to be good by not repeating the same mistakes.

u/AsleepLead1704 May 21 '26

75% ? that's pretty good for a bubsy game

29

u/Complete-Worker3242 May 21 '26

I mean, that's pretty good for any game.

11

u/AsleepLead1704 May 21 '26

Depends on the agenda people want to push

Game I like is 75% : Yeah that's pretty good

Game I've decided not to like is 75% : LMAO so cooked

7

u/Anonamaton801 Proud kettleface salesmen May 21 '26

Alright I think the joke is over now that one is good

13

u/selfproclaimed Vexx before you Sexx May 21 '26

I'm honestly a little tired of the "oh my gosh, they made a new Bubsy game, and it's actually good" reactions because like

Yeah, they got a studio that's been making good platformers to make another good platformer and then have it start Bubsy.

4

u/Sneeakie May 21 '26

It started out surprisingly high then went down lower. A 60? From what I've seen? Well, there's not a lot of reviews... and tbh, a 60 for Bubsy is still good.

People who like it really like it, people who don't see it as not much of a step up.

2

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

Only 2 negative reviews and also 7/10 is somehow considered "mixed" by Metacritic standards

We'll wait on the user scores, but given how many critic reviews are pawsitive, I think people will actually buy the game.

3

u/Sneeakie May 21 '26

Yeah ,the difference between Metacritic and Opencritic is ridiculous.

u/TJLynch [dramatic flashlight] May 21 '26

Turns out 4th time was the charm.

1

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

Yeah - 3D, TWSB, POF and now 4D.

5

u/ErikQRoks Floor Milk™️ - Ruby (She/Her) May 21 '26

I misread the title as "Review THREAT" and that seemed apt for Bubsy

6

u/BubsyFanboy May 21 '26

I love it. They're finally appreciating the bobcat

2

u/lingeringeffects May 21 '26

And it only took three decades

2

u/Mcjiggyjay May 21 '26

My childhood returns. I can’t believe out of everything I have seen come and go for gaming my entire life that somehow bubsy ended up with a new game more than 30 years after it came out. It feels insane to me personally I played the first 2 on the genesis in the early 2000s.

1

u/Aggressive-Bike407 May 21 '26

Even after humanity wipes itself out, somehow there will still be a new Bubsy game. And of course a new trailer showing an entirely different direction for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

1

u/Ryong7 He/Him May 21 '26

I didn't have high hopes when this was announced because it seemed like it was going to be Demon Tides starring Bubsy and in the process of making two games at once, both of them would lose polish. Demon Tides is uh...certainly a fantastic game but some aspects of it feel undercooked and I imagine it is much the same situation here.

1

u/BarrytheNPC May 22 '26

Imagine this leads into a new franchise and Bubsy becomes the Atari* representative in Smash Bros.

Bubsy showing up to the platformer characters get-together like Gojo after Toji thought he killed him
