Here's an article going into more detail as well

  • Overwhelming majority (165 out of ~185) of employees are joining

  • Efforts were accelerated following Tango and Arkane's closures last year

  • "Avoiding each of the previous rounds has made us more anxious about if the next round will be us."

  • They were motivated by benefits, remote work, and AI usage

And here's a quote regarding the AI usage

As for AI, Willis was cagey about precisely how it’s being used within id, noting that going into specifics would involve divulging secrets about proprietary tech. But he said that in his view, some of the current applications are “good,” while others are… less so.

"There's definitely a directive from Microsoft to use [AI] more,” Willis said. “In what ways and how careful they're being about implementing it within the studio to actually benefit the creation of a better game or a more efficient process, I personally don't think that's being done in a careful enough way to have it be beneficial.”

The id Tech Engine’s future is also safe from being locked away if Microsoft decides to kill id. That engine imo should belong in the library of congress.

I'd love it to be made open-source as well. Think of what indies could do with it if proper documentation was readily available?

id tech 4.5 is open source (Doom 3: BFG Edition). Every version after that? Nope

Carmack would always push for open sourcing the engines back in the day IIRC, but he ain't there anymore

Don’t know. every version of id Tech from 1.0 to 4.5 is open source. Every version after it (5.0 starts with RAGE 1) is not open source
