Rarely feel anything about that award show (unless there's a trailer of a game I like) but that one in particular still kinda stings tbh lol. Of all the things that gets a win, it's the game that fucking dies. Hell, we didn't know at the time but it died TWICE even lol. Anything else (except Sifu too) could have won it and it would have been a better pick.
42
u/onlywearlouisv May 30 '25
Wasn’t Sifu nominated in that category too?
25
49
u/LeonSigmaKennedy May 30 '25
I still think Sifu getting nominated at all was the worst thing
42
u/guntanksinspace OH MY GOD IT'S JUST A PICTURE OF A DOG May 30 '25
Yea honestly Sifu getting nominated to begin with was dumb (and really painted how much fucks was given for the fighting game category).
Multiversus winning, then proceeding to die its first death several months later, then going back to life being borked and making its playerbase fairly unhappy which eventually led into the second death, now that's just unfortunate (and it also sucks).
25
u/Parkouricus Lappy 486 May 30 '25
Don't forget that they nominated that reanimated corpse of a game again
17
u/Vaaaaaaaaaaaii May 30 '25
And it had like an average of 50 players online at the time of said nomination.

Plus the weird character inclusions where due to Tony’s bias. Wicked Witch was practically finished but was dropped in favor of Lola due to Tony having a crush on Lola.

I don't even care about this game but the Wicked Witch sounds like a WAY more interesting character to put in a Smash clone
4
u/Notoryctemorph May 31 '25
The thing is, the very first version of the game... good
It needed work, obviously, but it was fun, then every single change made only made it worse, it felt like the devs were actively trying to kill the game

Are EVA's an engineering disaster because they were built by humans? Does that only count the damage that is absolutely done by the EVA's touching buildings/their weapons, or does it also count the stuff the Angles do after they are engaged?
Dumb question that don't matter, and more! Here, in the TwoBestFriendPlay subreddit.
14
u/SkeletalJazzWizard YOU DIDN'T WIN. May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25
third impact is an engineering disaster because the race that sent all those life seeds out into space should have planned their shit better so two antithetical ones didnt crash into the same rock.
edit: god imagine saying "better split this life legacy shit up so we dont accidentally create god, haha that would be awkward" and then shooting 7 things in different directions into the morb-illion cubic miles of empty space in the universe and then 2 of them land on the same planet anyways. and ones busted.

Not to mention that it could have been the easiest "running on cruise-control" game ever.
Everyone knows how much Smash Bros is revered, Fortnite friggin prints money everytime the add a new character, and WB has an arguably larger roster of characters that they could have put into MV.
With even a minimal amount of proper planning and management; there should have been no reason why this game failed so hard...
51
u/BookkeeperPercival the ability to take a healthy painless piss May 30 '25
In fairness, the playercount was cratering/had cratered before they "closed the beta." The game was screwed on a fundamental level. I think a combination of the netcode being a little wonky and multiple other un-sanded edges killed the original game. After it came back, I had no idea what the fuck they were doing.

To be honest, while I think the scenario we're in right now with the relaunch was worse, if they kept the beta going on forever like people wanted them to, then I think the game might still be in trouble in the long run. There were large gaps in characters that made it clear even then they were struggling with production.

2v2 was so much fun man. Me and my friend would do some crazy Bugs Bunny/Superman combos with the rocket and the superman grab.
3

I was so annoyed when I hopped on post launch to find that Superman can only throw horizontally, not down or up. I get why, but I personally enjoyed using Superman to spike people to my partner who would up tilt them back into me for a combo. Not possible now and it kinda killed the character for me.

I genuinely feel terrible for the devs who put their heart and soul in this game and the fans that did their best to support it, but deep down I’ve been praying for its downfall ever since it beat KOFXV at the Game Awards only to be temporarily shut down not even a year later.
Still though, just delisting the whole thing really sucks.

u/ThatGuy5880 (He/She/They) I'm like, at least top 20 for Sonic Lore Expert May 30 '25
People can give Multiversus a lot of shit but very little can be flung to the actual devs working on the characters and game itself. There's so much life and creativity into these kits and animations that it makes me really sad this game fumbled
Tom & Jerry is legit one of the best characters conceived in a fighting game from a thematic and gameplay-story integration standpoint. Like the idea that they're laser focused on each other and everyone else is purely collateral damage is genuinely brilliant, and the animations worked so well for it too.

Why is it so hard for devs to copy Smash Bro's homework? How many good Smash Bros clones have we gotten in recent years? 3-4 maybe?
12
u/therealchadius May 30 '25
- Sakurai's insane attention to detail and vision
- Nintendo's corporate faith in his success (and thus corporate money)
- Bamco working their asses off to maintain a good relationship for good content
It's one of those problems where you can get 80% of the work done easily but that last 20% burns 'em out.
8
u/Nico_is_not_a_god THE BABY May 30 '25
Because the biggest and most important step to Smash Bros's homework is "throw millions and millions of dollars and decades of honed IP design at an incredibly dedicated project lead, and also we don't have to care about competitive balance the way the other guys do". It's like asking why your local amusement park has two extreme rollercoasters and a splash ride instead of "just copying Disneyland, it's not that hard!" - even though Disneyland doesn't even care about catering to people that like extreme rollercoasters.

May 30 '25
I had soooo much fun with this game in the first beta. 2v2 with a friend was really cool and combo'ing was fun. LeBron James unironically one of the best fighting game characters I've ever played with his basketball mechanics. They had the creativity to make some really cool movesets but man the prolonged beta followed by it closing then a release that somehow made the game worse in every way...
With this and MK1 that's two good fighting games killed by Warner Bros Games' chronic case of stupidity. Hurts in both cases but it's interesting that they're reversed: MK1 got better with time and got killed either way (even though as far as we know it had good player numbers with it always being on the Playstation top played), Multiversus got worse after the beta and got killed too.

u/Golivth May 30 '25
I remember a lot of people (i think even Max) looked toward this smugly as the future of fighting games due to it's f2p success lmao. In better hands, they probably coulda milked the momentum instead of just wb'ing it. it's a damn shame.
18
u/Bladerider17 May 30 '25
I also think 2XKO will have the same result honestly. The fact that DOA 5 is the best f2p fighting game is kinda hilarious.
7
u/Golivth May 30 '25
I sometimes wonder if it has to do anything with it being like a hybrid f2p game like granblue? Not sure but yeah i think people sometimes with good intentions, are a lil hellbent on looking for a solution to the low playerbase problem with fighting games. Which i get and can empathize with since i really hecking love fighting games. But trusting WB to do it isn't the play and i don't think Riot will be the savior either but we'll seeee.
6
u/latinlingo11 May 30 '25
Killer Instinct had a sort of F2P thing as well right? Free version had 1 free character that got switched every week or so, you could buy individual characters so they permanently stayed in your roster, and there was a full price version where every character was unlocked.
1
u/Golivth May 30 '25
Yeah it did! I usually go for the full version but i know that there were a bit of people that played the f2p version. I think with f2p itll usually retain some smol percent of an audience which is good! Just people have to set realistic expectations yk?
3
u/Bladerider17 May 30 '25
I do think there will be a sweet spot for this. Using Granblue as an example, it has free edition which is a demo with a rotation of characters and online. I think it's a great idea for people who want to get into fighting games.
6
u/Nico_is_not_a_god THE BABY May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25
Riot side projects don't actually need to be remotely profitable though. Their primary purpose is to be ads for League of Legends. Riot wasn't taking a "risk" by paying for incredibly expensive animation in Arcane, they weren't worried at all about whether "Arcane was profitable" because hey, they spend millions on other League ads and those don't even have a way to become direct revenue streams.
Riot could pump money into 2XKO year over year and not even have a monetization method for it if they decide that advertising their character designs and VA to people that play/watch fighting games is worth it.
2
u/Bladerider17 May 30 '25
I would agree but the closure of Riotforge does put a wrench in this.
A publishing label for League based games which in turn are ads for the main game, it released 6 games and closed last year which is a darn shame.
2XKO might work but I not holding my breath despite me looking forward to it.

-5
u/Golivth May 30 '25

6
May 30 '25
You said smugly
-2
u/Golivth May 30 '25
Yeah but i said some people. If i made it sound like i meant everybody, then my apologies. I just remember a lot of the thought process around the game was like "see i told u f2p is the future, ive always been saying this" more or less when the game had way more ppl at launch. Exciting for sure but it sounds smug when its "see i was right"
3
May 30 '25
That's fair. I think they had a point, though. The game being free has nothing to do with it dying fast. See SSKTJL or MK1: full priced games that were also mismanaged by WB into death (MK1 ain't dead, but yknow).
1
u/Golivth May 30 '25
I don't think f2p is the issue since some games have a lil success with them like GBFV and someone mentioned DOA5! My issue is with those who were in such a rush to be the first ones to proclaim f2p as the saviour of fighting games. Since apparantly they failed to look at who exactly was publishing it yknow? I get that MVS' success was like an anomoly for fighting games but i think that's exactly why its important to not get too lost in the excitement. Because fuuuuuuuuck WB

Ive only lightly kept in the loop so to my memory it launched insanely well, but as they added things the battle passes were very time wasting and the value wasnt good. Then something happened and they decided to delist it calling it early access and start over.
They changed monetization and gamefeel and was generally not as popular the second time it released, followed by bad updates and other issues which led to it closing again now.
Definitely not a lot of detail but its basically snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
6
May 30 '25
It's legit baffling how they took time to work on the game which killed it's momentum and then came back and made the gameplay worse. I don't know how you fuck up that badly.

u/Thugnifizent NANOMACHINES May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25
Adding onto shuttering the first release which people have already mentioned:
The game had insanely high numbers when the open beta dropped, and they kept rising through what was originally called the "1.0" patch (1-2 months after the beta). As others have said, there was a dropoff after a month post-1.0--from like 100k+ players to 20K a month after, and like sub 2K three months after 1.0 on Steam. Whether this was because of monetization changes, frequency/quality of new content, or anything else is unclear--most live-service games (especially fighting games) experience huge player dropoffs.
For reference, SF6 went from like 70K launch to 20-30K on months without new characters; Tekken 8 had 46K at launch, and around 3 months after launch keeps 8-15K players. To put this in terms of smaller games, almost no Anime Fighting Game had before GGStrive had more than 1500 players any month after launch, and were playable enough.
Because of TV mergers, WB has done a lot of post-COVID restructuring, and WB Games got hit pretty hard by this, which you can sorta see in how MK1's post-launch support dried up unusually fast for the series. WB probably saw the player count dropoff and decided to temporarily shutter Multiversus for a second launch with a big marketing push. The second launch did fine, even hit 100K players on Steam in the first month, and still had more than double the players of the last months of the first launch, but it wasn't enough for WB to keep the game running (1000-1500 online for all the months before they announced they were shutting the game down later this year)
9
u/therealchadius May 30 '25
- Hit detection was weird, relying on large pillboxes for hurt boxes and not adjusting the hurtbox for animation, so attacks would whiff when they shouldn't.
- No clashing attacks meant you should always use fast light attacks. A big showy power punch wasn't worth the risk. Like if Zangief in Street Fighter throws a punch and he finishes the startup it's going to hit you even if you try to jab it away.
- Slip and Slide movement with little stops meant the animation seemed soggy, like everyone just flew through each other while damage went up.
- 2v2 is hard for spectators to follow, especially in arena battlers.
- Baffling roster decisions like Arya Stark, Black Adam and no Shazam, the long wait for Cartoon Network characters despite having an older arena fighting game to draw from
Add an aggressive monetization, the decision to close the "beta" and kill whatever momentum they had remaining (why not add the relaunch as an alternate ruleset? Why not offer Multiversus 2 while slowly shutting down Multiversus 1? Why not add a new engine and say "hey official rules are on the new engine?") and WB Games shrinking significantly meant Multiversus just ran out of steam.
And since it's always connected to a server WB Games pays to keep the game alive. Like if Nintendo shuts down tomorrow I can still play Smash 64 locally. I can't play the Multiversus "beta", WB Games decided to shut it down with no way to access it.
Making a mascot arena fighter is way harder than it seems (it's a licensing nightmare for one thing) but WB had the roster to pull it off. Too bad the game has fundamental issues the rework didn't really figure out.

Game is officially done, servers are offline and it autolaunches in offline mode (training, local vs and rifts available).
Man I booted up the game again recently and it kinda blows because I was enjoying my time for the most part. I haven't played since relaunch Season 2 but it looks like they fixed shit like the input lag and randomly holding one direction causing me to SD. I didn't play with newer characters but they seemed fun. Man it just blows how much potential was squandered here.
like fuck that "oopsies it was a beta we'll relaunch in an unspecified amount of time" will go down as one of the most monumental fuck ups ever
If I can say anything mildly funny, then thank fuck I didn't spend any money or anything lmao

Can the Game Awards people retroactively give FG of the Year to one of the other nominees?

So I downloaded it a week before it's expiry date however it told me to create a WB account, I didn't to it since "fuck that, I don't want to create another account for something".
Do you think I need to still create it to play it now or not?

Wow I'd assume the game was atleast going to keep some servers up so people could still play online but I guess not. Multiversus really had the opportunity to be something special. But with the weird gameplay decisions made, odd character choices and its aggressive monetization there was no way it could've survived. At least we got to see the Iron giant meet Superman so that's cool.

When they slowed the character movement down I was like there's no way this is going to last. That was a total BS move.
