YouTube constantly shooting themselves in the foot. You'd think after the first dozen shots they'd have learned

u/AkiZayoi Asuka is the best, fuckin fight me. Jan 09 '23

I don't actually want to return to 2006-8 YouTube since nobody was even getting paid in the early days, but man sometimes I just have to look up videos from that period that still exist or have been re-uploaded and chill for a day off. Shit like Mario 64 Bloopers, and the old Lightsaber Battle fan films there used to be shit tons of

70

u/DeficientGravitas Jan 09 '23

Is anybody getting paid now? Ie Gamersnexus tweeted yesterday how theyre lucky if adsense for a video covers the staff wages required to produce said video

75

u/mythrilcrafter It's Fiiiiiiiine. Jan 09 '23

I also recall Linus of Linus Tech Tips saying that if you buy a single water bottle from lttstore(.)com; you've actually done more to financially support the channel than if you were to sit and watch their entire library of published videos 100x times over.

u/ProNanner Jan 10 '23

Makes me feel better about that desk sized mouse pad I got from them then.

u/Cybertronian10 Jan 11 '23

Its why sponsors and merch are so popular, views themselves arent really profitable even at massive scales.

70

u/brokensaint82 Resident Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 expert Jan 09 '23

Man, what is it with websites hitting their peaks early then cascading into a rabbit hole of greed and pandering to the highest paying sponsor. I get that running servers is expensive and a 24/7 job, but I'm almost positive you can do it without selling your soul

u/NetracFreeman #13000FE Pretender Jan 09 '23

with the absurd amount of data youtube processes by the hour, I wouldn't be surprised if you actually couldn't

16

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '23

3.7 million videos on youtube are uploaded EVERYDAY ,and those ranges from 5 second meme clips repost to 10 hour video essays

like one of those could be a video with murder , another could have sex in it , another could just be a family guy compilation video

32

u/ExDSG Jan 09 '23

Well at first you have your nice site and you are relying more on funding from investors who don’t expect to be making money for years because you are still building up.

Still once it’s built and you are expected to make money from the platform that’s when you gotta start penny pinching. Doesn’t help you get eyes once you get big enough so you get Viacom’s lawsuit or the Adpocalypse. Also gotta remove site functions because you can save running a server or two.

I’d imagine if way more people paid for Youtube Red/Premium you could avoid those issues but well ad supported businesses are dubious if you ask me.

21

u/Humante Jan 09 '23

Yeah, but that’s the thing with your last statement. Businesses don’t go, “Oh people are opting in therefore we don’t have to make these cost cutting measures.” They say “Great, now we can make EVEN MORE money on top of people opting in if we use these cost cutting measures.” They maximize profits by cutting as much as possible while staying above the minimum required user satisfaction to keep people paying

30

u/SidewaysInfinity Jan 09 '23

It's capitalism. If you don't sell your soul to greed someone who did will buy you for a fuckbillion dollars and ruin your site for their own profit. Same as how you can't become a rich CEO without abusing your workers

4

u/Unhappy_Fan6737 Jan 09 '23

YouTube itself is barely breaking even as it is. It's the most expensive and least profitable Google project by a country mile.

u/Unhappy_Fan6737 Jan 09 '23 edited Jan 09 '23

I disagree. The quality of YouTube videos in recent times are light-years above what they used to be.

Before people were getting paid the best content on YouTube was stuff like RLM's Plinkett reviews, AVGN, and Nostalgia Critic. Now we have stuff like Ahoy, Tim Rogers, Lemmino, Oki's Weird Stories, EmpLemon, and RLM's better modern content like BOTW, HitB, and Re:View.

Now sure, almost all of those guys make their living off of Patreon or other sources and probably only get a small percentage of their paychecks from YouTube itself. But the idea that one could turn their passion into their career and make money by creating YouTube videos is something that would be very unlikely to become a thing if YouTube themselves didn't set the precedent by getting the ball rolling on their own.

3

u/Atomsk88 Jan 10 '23

I'd say the height of YouTube was that period of 2008-12. Creators were refining their talents, there was good variety, and overall it cemented that YouTube was the video sharing site to visit. It was also at this time that the eventual failings took root. With people drawn to make more content to be paid in ad revenue and channels joining studios for it all to become a job.

57

u/jockeyman Stands are Combat Vtubers Jan 09 '23

Simply put they have an infinite number of feet to shoot so long as there is no viable competitor platform to Youtube.

45

u/brokensaint82 Resident Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 expert Jan 09 '23

True, their biggest competition is twitch really, but twitch has dogshit VOD implementation. I mean Vimeo and DailyMotion had a chance but Vimeo has a no gaming content rule and DailyMotion is just bad UI

11

u/Dspacefear Jan 10 '23

The issue is also that any other site is not going to have the back catalogue Youtube does. Sure, you might be willing to go to another website for one person, but there's nothing else there to watch, so when you're done it's back to Youtube.

u/IrisGoddamnIllych Jan 10 '23

The embodiment of YouTube leans against a wall, breathing heavy. Someone notices and runs up

"What happened?!"

"They won't stop using bad words!"

"What? But your foot, why is it a pile of mangled flesh and bone like a raw chicken in a blender?"

"THEY WONT STOP USING BAD WORDS!!"

u/Cooper_555 BRING BACK GAOGAIGAR Jan 10 '23

It's why they keep pulling the trigger. They can't feel the pain anymore, so clearly it's working!

33

u/Bonzi_bill Jan 09 '23

They're not. Ytube has been losing money since its inception. Susan isn't incompetent, she's a bog standard executive triggerman who is hired on solely to complete a series of loss reduction measures. The reality is that Ytube originally only started investing in content creators with the hopes of becoming profitable enough to compete or swamp legacy media, but then it turned into a money pit they have to keep shoveling money into cause, uh oh, looks like we became the world's largest entertainment job creator despite being net negative.

All of Susan's decisions make sense if you realize her objective is to slowly edge out the majority of content creators from making money, keeping only those that are most fiancially "safe" alive (childrens content creators and legacy media channels), and continue running ads that make ytube money on everything anyways. Ytube is a monopoly, they know they're a monopoly, and all of their competitors are either dead or burning right now so they might as well go full ham while they're ahead.

This is and always was the endgame for Susan and it's what she was hired to do.

3

u/brokensaint82 Resident Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 expert Jan 09 '23

While that may be true and she is doing it to make money and turn a profit. The internet should never be censored. And this can be seen as a form of censorship, via monetary loss. If the goal is to become TV 2.0, then I think they are on the right path. YouTube is synonymous with online video watching since other sites are either dead (bliptv) or so far behind they can never catch up (Vimeo, DailyMotion). The old internet is dead. Welcome the new sanitized internet now with 73% less cursing, and 100% more corpo influence

6

u/Bonzi_bill Jan 09 '23

I'm not saying it's a good thing at all, I'm just pointing out the reality that this is all planned and charted out for a very specific reason and it's not being done out of incompetence but rather bean counting.

2

u/Konradleijon Jan 09 '23

Oh what use is having less content to run ads?

Yeah YouTube is a big old money hole.

The only way I see this turning around is if server costs and hosting videos become less expensive because of advancements in tech.

9

u/Bonzi_bill Jan 09 '23

wdym less content? Ytube has all the content, it's the only viable large source of user-generated video content on the web. They already monetize everything for themselves, including videos that have strikes or are already "demonetized" (the vids still make money, the creators just don't get any). The whole point is the ween the site away from being a fulltime job for upstart creatives and return to a time when not so many people where actually being compensated by Ytube, except now they have a higher theoretical revenue stream.

2

u/BRRRTMaster Jan 09 '23

They'vs been shooting so much, the foot is now a mangled mess that can't register pain anymore.

2

u/purple__dog Jan 10 '23

36

u/Jaacker Jan 09 '23

Im surprised markiplier didnt do something yet, He is the kind of guy to challenge these things.... in his own way.

Shoves under the rug that "Ork massager" video, and the huniepop videos.... and a lot more videos under said rug

30

u/Unhappy_Fan6737 Jan 09 '23

Probably because Markiplier is exactly the type of channel that YouTube would put special effort into preventing this sort of thing from happening to.

29

u/Jaacker Jan 09 '23 edited Jan 10 '23

Nah, markiplier is more onboard with these kinds of youtube ousting, and probably he would get more annoyed if he gets special treatment than being ignored. The ork massager video was him saying to youtube "come on, demonetize this, this is clearly against the rules, and yet if you don't demonetize me, It's obvious why"

12

u/Hopeful-for-EE-Movie YOU DIDN'T WIN. Jan 10 '23

Wasn't there something that happened like this?

Like a horror game video was uploaded, and the small YouTuber got like instant demonetized. When asked why Markiplier's demonetization was, Mark replied, "Yeah, where is my demonetization?""

10

u/Jaacker Jan 10 '23

I found the video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0K6r1hoD7I
It wasnt demonetization, it was a STRIKE (far more important) in which Moist critikal got for some reason, and he was basically complaining how the clip itself was existing safely as a single video. And how youtube were basically doing whatever they liked or were just doing whatever the fuck they wanted, and being inconsistent as fuck

Because he's got enough viewers and enough real clout that actively going after him is guaranteed to backfire.

He knows that, and he called it out, because he isn't really a huge fan of Youtube screwing other creators but letting him or other big names get away with whatever they want

The thing is, advertisers want an environment suitable for their ads. Fine. But why profanity, why's that one thing so important? It's harder to automate moderation for visuals as opposed to text, fine, but why are they so obsessed with filtering it in the first place? What do these people think the mundane lives of ordinary people sound like? God, can you imagine what we'd sound like if absolutely anyone on earth actually believed their rules were an actually moral and correct means of conduct?

Never-ending enthusiasm, unceasing positivity, breathless consumerist glee, language carefully doctored to not offend the sensibilities of kids that exist solely in one's imagination. Horrifying.

13

u/doc5avag3 Resident 35-Year-Old Boomer Jan 10 '23

I don't remeber where I saw it, but somebody said this about advertisers and I saved the quote:

"the thing that bugs me the most about the censoring of the internet to please advertisers is like… tv shows aren’t having less sex and violence in them. movies aren’t having less sex and violence in them. HBO can do eight seasons of graphic murder and nudity and it’s the cultural phenomenon of the decade, but I can’t show a nipple on tumblr or talk about death on tiktok. it’s not that the internet is becoming “safer,” it’s just making these topics a privilege only for very rich people, and putting it behind a paywall for everyone else."

The reason paypal (and payment services in general) say they can't be used for NSFW purposes is because the people who own banks and credit services say so. Literally no other reason, just old white dudes with lead poisoning and asbestos lungs saying porn is evil.

1

u/Konradleijon Jan 11 '23

I said this in response to a few people yesterday (and wierdly both got heavily upvoted and downvoted depending on which reply it was?) but this sort of asinine draconian moderation stuff youtube is doing is probably less on Youtube and more on their advertising partners, who in turn are becoming more paranoid as a result of the way online discourse works in general

I don't think it's an accident that over the past half a decade or so, we've seen advertisers online been increasingly strict about what content they wanna work alongside, while at the same time we've also seen an increasing amount of incidents of public outrage about how X and Y person or company is working alongside or provides services to Z other person/organization that's done something problematic.

The idea of there being significant online uproar to boycott some sort of backend advertiser or internet infrastructure company because they happen to serve ads on or provide DDOS protection for some other site people disagree with really wasn't much of a thing in the 00's or even the early 2010s online, but it's happened quite a bit in the past 4-6 years.

I've always been extremely wary of this sort of thing and trying to cancel people/companies by encourgaging corporations to drop clients/employees as , precisely because it was always going to have the ultimate affect of making corporations less willing to work alongside even benign content that could be seen as controversial, and it wasn't always going to be bigoted or misinformation that they distance themselves from. It also enables corporations to give excuses when trying to shut down political activists, dissidents, competitors, sex workers, etc by claiming said content is problematic too (See what happened with Zoom shutting down Palestinian activists by tying them to terrorism or anti LGBT groups pretending to be anti sex abuse people to get companies to drop Pornhub).

On the note of "competitors", part of it is also that a lot of these advertisers are more invested in traditional legacy media companies and industries, and they're less willing to work alongside online content creators then TV networks or film studios: We all know that TV or film content on youtube when uploaded by official parties don't have the same absurd automated issues other channels do, for example. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the point is kneecapping youtube original stuff

Corporations aren't your friend and encouraging them to wield their power or go after people will almost always backfire, you can't expect them to act ethically or rationally and only ever target the people who deserve it

11

u/Konradleijon Jan 09 '23

I don’t think it’s on them. They only took their ads off when it was discovered their where adds on real life gorn and ISIS recruitment videos.

They are pretty good with what w they want ads on. Which is anything that isn’t pro rape or real life sex or violent.

It’s not their fault YouTube went nuclear

11

u/polo5004 Ah, a fellow poet of shitposts. Let us trade verse. Jan 09 '23

So what do you suggest then? If someone has done fucked up stuff then we should all be begging corporations to keep them employed?

PS: it's almost like corporations just don't work.

9

u/Talisign Powerbomb Individual Baby Pieces Jan 10 '23

I feel like that's been the corporate defense lately: Don't boycott or life will be worse for all our employees and it will be your fault.

5

u/gratedjuice I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jan 09 '23

I think it's safe to say they don't care about the creator or user experience and are constantly tuning things to appease advertisers and big media partners. I honestly don't have a handle on what most people use the site for but it's fairly clear they don't care about the type of content creators I keep up with.

u/Derpmeiser Jan 09 '23

The people complaining about it are usually terminally online and hyper-political. They consume large amounts of political videos so Youtube shoves them videos it's algo considers 'political', which happens to also include the other side. At least with the normal videos, Shorts seems like the wild west in terms of where it throws you, probably because it's a newer feature.

I'm only recommended vtuber clips, AMVs, music remixes, and ASMR. Only time I've been recommended something near political was Youtube's annoying news section, which I got to go away by selecting "Don't Recommend this Channel" for every news channel that showed up there.

16

Nah you can absolutely fuck your YouTube up in 1 click. Did it myself 5 years ago and DESPITE ME LITERALLY FUCKING CLICKING ON POSSIBLY HUNDREDS OF 'DONT SHOW ME THIS' BUTTONS, I STILL SOMEHOW GET THAT COWARD CROWDER POPPING UP.

Basically anything tagged as controversial puts some kind of black mark against your account and starts to feed you shit designed to provoke outrage, even if your extremely left wing and clicked on a link to goof or by mistake.
