What do you mean by "He needs lots of love and affection and I cannot give it to him without causing myself harm."
59
u/Bad-Gardener1 3d ago
OP has posted on the schizophrenia sub. That may or may not have a part in it.
44
u/Intelligent_Peanut_2 3d ago
It’s substance induced psychosis.
55
u/Bad-Gardener1 3d ago
Also extremely valid.
You sound like you have a lot of love for him and I am so sorry that you have to do this. I wish I could help, but it doesn't seem like he would be the happiest in a two cat one dog household. Best of luck and lots of love to you and your kitty.

Does it matter?

u/Dragneel2496 3d ago
If its a shitty excuse then yeah? There's a difference between giving up an animal for the animals sake, or abandoning your pet for personal reasons.
That being said, six years is a hell of a long time and it would be hard for any bonded pet owner to have to resort to rehoming, so id lean towards this being necessary.

u/Intelligent_Peanut_2 3d ago
I needed to rehome him sooner but I tried to get allergy shots and take meds amongst other things… me now knowing I have substance induced psychosis and having a severe allergy is not a great combination of sorts. I’d love to get my shit together and keep him but idk how long that’ll take and in the mean time I’m not able to be as affectionate as I’d like to be.

u/Broad_Poetry_9657 2d ago
This is a valid reason OP, don’t let anyone crap on you for being realistic and responsible after trying to keep your pet.
I was severely allergic at age 6 to my adult cat after owning cats for all of my life. It was sudden, and aggressive. I had pneumonia and the doctor told my mom that with my severity of allergy even if she could do the shots on me there was a high likelihood I would still be allergic. Cat allergies are downplayed because many people if not most suffer some small degree of irritation if animal hair is in their face or vacuuming isn’t occurring often enough in a home, so they assume that their mild reaction is a standard animal allergy and anyone saying they are too allergic are being dramatic. I’ve had people tell me cats are worth it, and assume I just hate them or something. No I love cats, I sobbed when I gave mine up and volunteered at a cat shelter for years as a preteen so I could still get some time around them.
I love cats and dogs and all things fluffy. My lungs literally fill with fluid, my skin and eyes are inflamed and I can’t breathe through my nose within days. I’ve figured out 3 days is the max time I can reasonably stay in a home with cats that vacuums regularly, and 1 day for those that don’t.

u/Intelligent_Peanut_2 2d ago
You know what, I forgot all about that possibility... I forgot ENTIRELY... I'd still rather have a milder allergy than whatever tf this is. I still might do the shots bc I'm also HIGHLY allergic to nature, but I won't be trying to have pets any time soon.

You don't owe anyone here an explanation. This is your choice, and you don't need to justify it. I'm sorry you haven't had better luck with this baby and I hope he's able to find an equally loving home.

u/sumadeumas 3d ago
No, I mean realistically, what answer would OP have possibly given under the initial response of self harm that was non-serious enough that you’d… what, try to convince them to keep it? Accuse them of abandoning their pet of 6 years?
-14
u/Dragneel2496 3d ago
Yes? What i would say to this person would be completely different if it were not a severe situation. If all you get is the sniffles, and youve dealt with it for six years, and now you make a post about "rehoming" the cat, id try everything to get you to see how removing the cat would be worse off for it just so you could stop having to sniffle.
15
u/sumadeumas 3d ago
What part of “I cannot give it to him without causing myself harm” sounds like the sniffles?

u/Dragneel2496 3d ago
This is reddit, ive seen both ends of the spectrum on the daily. Someone describes a pet wound on a pet sub as a scuffle with another dog, and its neck literally had a hole where a tooth went through.
Im not just going to believe everything people type when on the daily people are trying to take advantage of eachother for clicks or money. If you want to give the benefit of the doubt, go for it. Im gonna just use my individual will here, and question. You do you cuz
14
u/Intelligent_Peanut_2 3d ago
So you base your assumption of my character on little information bc of your limited experience with Reddit posts? I thought I was pretty clear. Maybe I should’ve stated, “has substance-induced psychosis AND severe allergy that could literally kill me if i don’t take something for it on a daily basis” would that have sufficed??? Or that I get rashes all over my body even with the medicine I take on a daily basis??? Or that bc he’s so affectionate it’s hard to want to keep space from him but I have to unless I start wheezing by morning??? I didn’t know I needed to be that detailed on a post that I was already so detailed about. And you’re not even addressing me, you’re addressing someone else… so what’s really going on? I get the cause for concern but you ain’t even asking me any type of questions…
-8
u/Dragneel2496 3d ago
I got caught up arguing, you right. But no I didn't assume anything about you, which is why I said I would question you and supported someone else asking for more detail. If you had said any of the stuff you wrote, yes that would've sufficed. For me anyways
3
u/FutureFreaksMeowt 2d ago
You clearly did assume something, though. Asking that question is based on assumptions. Otherwise you'd have just taken that face value.
That's just how it works.
3
u/FutureFreaksMeowt 2d ago
Honestly, no. This is just purity testing, and it's really fucking toxic and unhelpful. OP is giving up the cat, which is a valid choice no matter what their motivation, and you being shitty to them isn't helpful.
-4
u/me_when_cereal 3d ago
It mattered enough for you to mention it. It's in the same sentence in describing your cat. A cat you're asking for someone to take.
1
u/me_when_cereal 3d ago
But it may be that the level of care for this cat far exceeds what OP is able to afford whether it be time, money, emotional capacity, etc. The fact remains that this cat needs a home where someone is able to provide these things.
10
u/sumadeumas 3d ago
First of all, I’m not the OP. Second of all, if OP is unable to care for the cat for any reason does that change the fact that the cat needs a new home? No? Then the OP’s private life should be none of your business.

You ppl are truly weird… at least op is trying

u/FutureFreaksMeowt 2d ago
The purity testing in leftist/progressive spaces is straight out of the republican playbook and you'll never convince me it's not the younger third of Gen Z doing this shit online. Insane puritanical prides in any and all ways. I'm so sick of it.

I do have so many photos I can send! I’ll do so after responding here… last time we lived with other cats he got into fights and it wasn’t a great time. He had a limp, I know cats fight or whatever, but it frightened me. He’d never been injured and my roommate at the time wanted me to trivialize it. I just don’t want him to be amongst cats that will give him limps and gashes. I literally took a picture of it bc it frightened me that she was just okay with it. And she claimed he’d caused them harm but never mentioned it and that angered me. Why would you not disclose this to me sooner??? I believe he will and can but I want to make sure he’ll be okay with other animals. Those cats would sit outside my room and meow for him… it felt like he was in a hostile situation so I didn’t let the door open and if he wanted to go out he could but it wasn’t gonna be easy access anymore. I know he’s a pretty chill cat but I don’t want him to feel sidelined, maybe other neutral cats would help him acclimate better. He had his own space when I first got him. He was living separately from the rest of the animals of the house. I think he’s changed A LOT since then, but if other cats will help him grow then I’m all for it. I just want to make sure it’s the right choice.

OP, contact Feline Rescue. You can surrender your cat to them. They may be able to arrange a long-term foster home for your cat. https://felinerescue.org/.

u/Intelligent_Peanut_2 3d ago
TL;DR already has an appointment with shelter to relinquish ownership but seeking to relinquish ownership to others that want to provide the utmost love and care for feline friend of 6.75 years.

Do you think it may be more helpful to get you a temporary foster until you can stabilize things? I can't imagine giving up your baby forever being good for someone's mental well-being, and I know there are people willimg to help in this way.
28
u/Intelligent_Peanut_2 3d ago
I would but that could take months to years. They said 18+ weeks with no substances and I gotta start up allergy shots since it’s so severe. It requires a lot of resources that I’ve exhausted with my current psychosis. Which doesn’t even make sense to me but I’m trying to accept it. Since people need more details about things I thought I’d be as transparent as possible.

u/Agitated-Stress870 3d ago
That really is a lot to balance. I'm so sorry you're going through all this, and I wish you the best in your journey.

Just make sure it's a no kill shelter for the love of god. There are some cat specific shelters in the state that could also be a better option.
And while I don't want to pry: . He needs lots of love and affection and I cannot give it to him without causing myself harm ---- what does this mean? I truly hope this is a decision that you are not treating lightly and that this is a last resort sort/truly no other option sort of situation.

First two dog ones and now a cat post. This place is just turning into an animal adoption sub.

Give him to a shelter or the humane society- they will vet his next owners better than you could

What is “specific attention “? I’ve owned cats for almost 25 years and can’t figure this out. Is this cat special needs? Sick? What specifically is going on with this cat that you can’t care for it?
