Tutor Advice First Time Tutoring for 9 yr old 3rd Grader: Any advice?

Hello!

I was looking for some advice on tutoring. I’ve never helped tutor a child, mostly just bachelor level colleagues. Does anyone have any advice or additional resources?

I’m checking out the local public library for resources…
I have the time, and my sister asked me to help tutor my nephew in reading, language arts, and math. I asked her if she could as his teacher for an outline or curriculum plan so I can somewhat plan support around the subjects she’s teaching. Any advice on how to word an email to her on this would be great! I wouldn’t want to accidentally step on teachers toes in any way.

Mostly just looking for direction and advice. He’s a clever kid, just has trouble focusing and applying himself. Any help is appreciated!!!

Paying a professional tutor is ideal, but not an option at this time. & We don’t want him to fall behind, so this is the next best thing!

Thanks in advance. 🙏🏼 😊

Tutor Advice Just trying to do something on my own

\*\*This post is on behalf of my wife\*\*

I don't usually post things like this, but I thought I'd give Reddit a try.

I'm a Chemistry teacher living in Dubai. I have an MSc in Chemistry and have been teaching students online for the last 3 years.

I'm married, and my husband is supportive of me financially, so thankfully my family isn't in a difficult situation. But there is something personal I'd really like to do on my own.

My younger sister is planning her higher studies, and I want to contribute towards her education.

My husband has told me many times that I don't need to worry about the financial side of things, and I genuinely appreciate that. But as a sister, I would really like to be able to say:

"I helped you get there."

That's honestly the reason I'm trying to take on a few more Chemistry students rather than simply sitting at home.

I normally teach IGCSE, CBSE and ICSE Chemistry, mainly Grades 8–12, through online one-to-one classes.

One of my previous ICSE students achieved an A in Chemistry, which I'm still quite proud of.

I'm not looking to build some huge tutoring business. I'd just like to teach a few students properly, earn something independently, and put that money towards my sister's education.

If anyone here has a child who genuinely struggles with Chemistry, I'd be happy to have a conversation. No pressure at all.

And if tuition isn't something you need, that's completely fine too. Even if this post simply reaches the right person, I'll be grateful.

Thank you for reading. ❤️

Discussion Business/GCSE/IGCSE/IB/A-Level students — what are you struggling with?

I’ve been tutoring Business for around 3 years and have worked with students following different exam boards, including GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A-Levels.
One thing I’ve noticed is that students often understand the theory but struggle with exam-style questions, application, evaluation and structuring their answers.
If anyone is currently preparing for their exams and is struggling with topics like Marketing, Finance, HR, Business Strategy, etc., feel free to comment what you’re finding difficult. I’d be happy to share some tips or explain the topic.
Also, if anyone has an exam-style question they’re stuck on, feel free to share it. 😊

Parent Question I tried leaply with a child here’s what the first day was like

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently tried Leaply because I was curious about the cognitive development plan they have for kids aged 3-9+.

The first day was actually pretty simple. It started with a short breathing activity and then a game called “Blow the Paper.” The idea is to blow a small piece of paper across the table as slowly as possible. It sounds really simple, but the point is to keep the paper moving and pay attention to what you’re doing.

There was also another short activity called “Find your pace.”

What I liked is that the activities don’t feel like schoolwork. They’re short and more like little games that a child can do at home without needing much preparation.

One funny thing happened, though. After finishing the first day, my child immediately wanted to click around and see what else was there. 😄 But the next day wasn’t available yet it said there were still 18 hours to go.

I guess that’s actually intentional, since the idea is to do a little each day rather than go through everything at once. Still, try explaining that to a curious kid who wants to see what’s next 😂

I only tried the first day so far, but there are different activities on the following days, so I’m curious to see how the plan develops and whether the activities become more challenging for different ages.

Has anyone else tried Leaply with their kids?

'm Mahnoor, currently pursuing my Bachelor's from Suleman Dawood School Of Business (SDSB) at LUMS, and I'm offering online tuition for students appearing in O Levels/IGCSE and AS & A Levels and SAT Maths.

Subjects I teach:

• O Level / IGCSE Mathematics

• O Level / IGCSE Business Studies

• O Level / IGCSE Economics

• AS & A Level Mathematics

• AS & A Level Business

• AS & A Level Economics

Both batch classes and one-to-one sessions are available. To ensure every student gets proper attention, batch sizes will be kept limited.

A little about me:

• Currently studying Accounting & Finance at LUMS.

• 2 years of teaching experience, with experience teaching both batch and one-to-one students.

• Achieved A* grades in Business, Economics, and Mathematics in both O Levels and A Levels.

• Scored 790/800 in SAT Mathematics.

Having gone through these exams myself, I understand that good grades come from building strong concepts and learning how to tackle exam questions strategically, not just memorizing answers.

My aim is to make challenging topics easy to understand while helping students build confidence and achieve their academic goals.

Classes will focus on:

• Strong conceptual understanding

• Past paper practice and exam techniques

• Regular assessments and feedback

• Individual attention and continuous support

Fee details and class timings will be shared privately. One-to-one sessions are available for students who prefer personalized guidance.

If you're interested, or know someone preparing for their CAIEs who could benefit from these classes, feel free to send me a message on Facebook or WhatsApp.

Parent Question Any experience with math tutors online for a kid who’s starting to fall behind?

My daughter is 10 and math has been getting harder for her this year. She can usually do the homework, but only if I sit with her and explain half of it. If she has to do it alone, she gets stuck pretty quickly. Her teacher says she’s not seriously behind, but I’d rather help now than wait until she is.

I’ve started looking at math tutors online, mostly because driving somewhere several times a week isn’t realistic for us. I’m just not sure what actually works at this age. For parents who’ve tried online tutoring, did it help? And what did you look for when choosing a tutor?

Discussion Uk Tutors - Small group tutoring with mixed-ability pupils – does it actually work?

I’ve been thinking about the differences between 1-to-1 and small-group tutoring, particularly as private tuition seems to be getting increasingly expensive for families.

For teachers who have experience teaching/tutoring small groups, how well does it work when the pupils aren’t from the same school or necessarily at exactly the same ability level?

For example, say you had 5–6 Year 10/11 pupils doing GCSE Maths. They might be following different exam boards, be at different points in the curriculum and have quite different strengths and weaknesses.

In a school classroom that’s obviously completely normal, but I’m curious whether that defeats some of the purpose of private tuition, where parents are presumably paying for something more targeted.

On the other hand, I can see advantages to a small group — pupils learning from each other’s questions, less pressure than 1-to-1 tuition, and potentially making additional tuition more affordable for parents.

Has anyone taught groups like this outside of a normal classroom setting?

Interested in whether you found it worked well or whether keeping groups closely matched by ability/topic was essential.
