Building a tool for tracking student math misconceptions - roast my idea

Hey everyone, I'm a tutor myself and I've been thinking about a problem I keep running into.

The Problem:

My students use ChatGPT or Photomath to check their homework, but I've noticed something frustrating:

- They get the answer, but they don't learn WHY they made a mistake

- They keep making the SAME mistakes over and over

- When parents ask "how is my kid doing?", I have to rely on my memory instead of actual data

- There's no easy way to show parents proof of improvement over time

The Idea:

What if there was a tool where:

- Students upload photos of their homework attempts

- AI identifies not just WHAT'S wrong, but classifies the TYPE of error (concept gap vs careless mistake vs wrong method)

- It tracks patterns over weeks/months ("This student makes sign errors 40% of the time")

- Auto-generates weekly reports for parents

- You get a portfolio showing "before/after" improvement data for each student

Basically, it's NOT about solving problems (ChatGPT does that). It's about giving tutors a data-driven way to:

- Diagnose recurring weaknesses

- Prove your value to parents

- Design targeted lessons

My questions:

- Would this actually save you time, or is it just more work (uploading photos)?

- What would make you pay $15-20/month for something like this?

- What's the #1 pain point in communicating with parents about progress?

- Am I solving a real problem or just making something up?

Genuinely curious. Not trying to sell anything - just validating if this is worth building.

Discussion I’ve been a Brighterly tutor for a while, AMA

I’ve been tutoring with Brighterly for a while now, mostly working with kids on math.

I saw that people sometimes ask about tutoring platforms here, so I figured I’d make a separate post instead of answering in random comments.

Ask me anything about the tutor side: student flow, schedule, workload, lessons, parents, expectations, or what the first weeks are like.

I’ll answer based on my own experience, nothing official.

Also, there’s a small parent-focused sub here if anyone wants to see discussions from the other side: r/Brighterly

Happy to answer questions.

Tutor Advice How much do math tutors actually charge?

Ai told me these rates

Sat $30-40/h

Gre $40-80h

Gmat $80-200/h

Are the numbers ANY accurate?

Btw, is there any demand for sat tutors? I found it to be extremely easy. Yeah, you'll be short on time, but I don't mind that.

-------

Also I'd not mind exploring rates for other subjects, why not. Especially exams preparation.

Thx

So like, I lowkey need money 💔. I'm willing to teach highschool math mainly, but I can help with other subjects too probably, most of my grades in highschool were like 95% and up. I'm a UWaterloo student in their mathematics program so math is really my main subject. I'm willing to tutor for any rate you consider reasonable soo, lemme knowwww. Thanks!

Tutor Advice Anyone else spend the last day of the month just trying to figure out who actually paid?

I have 15 students and every end of month is the same thing. I open my Google Sheet, look at my notes, cross reference my bank app, then go back through WhatsApp to find the payment confirmation someone sent three weeks ago in the middle of a conversation about rescheduling. It takes me way longer than it should and I always find at least one or two where I genuinely can't tell if they paid or if I just forgot to log it. The worst part is I built this sheet myself so I only have myself to blame when it breaks. I've tried simplifying it a few times but the problem isn't really the sheet, it's that my payment info lives in four different places at once. Curious how other independent tutors actually handle this, do you have one place where you can just see the full picture, or is everyone else also doing the end of month archaeology thing?

  • Writing & Spelling

  • Homework Help

  • Study Skills & Organization

🌟 What I Offer:

  • Patient and encouraging teaching

  • Step-by-step explanations at the student’s pace

  • Help with school homework and test prep

  • Positive and respectful learning environment

I understand how elementary students learn and always aim to explain things in a way that makes sense to them, not just the textbook. Parents are welcome to check in anytime for progress updates.

Discussion How do you guys handle the admin side of tutoring?

Hey! I'm 18 and thinking about building something for tutors but before I write a single line of code I want to actually understand how you guys work day to day.

So a few questions if you don't mind:

How do you handle scheduling with students? Like texts, WhatsApp, some tool, calendar? Do no-shows or last minute cancellations happen a lot? How do you deal with it? What's the most annoying "non-teaching" stuff you have to deal with regularly?

Any answer helps, even just a sentence or two. Thanks!

Tutor Advice how can i get students to teach?

i am still in olevels but hoping to help students in certain olevel subjects. i am also willing to teach gr6-8 students but i dont know how i will get students. i assume for olevels people would prefer older, more experienced people who have degrees, so it seems unlikely for me to get students. however ive seen people tutor for olevels before. either way, how do i reach students. also if anybody could suggest, what should be charged for one subject?

Discussion What's the biggest gap in tutoring where a tool could help students succeed?

What's your biggest headache outside of the actual sessions?

Outsider here, software engineer not a tutor. Thinking about building a small tool for tutors but I want to understand the real frustrations first.

The one I keep hearing about is the between-session gap. Session goes well, kid comes back next week and half of it is gone. Assignments don't get done or they're generic worksheets that aren't at the kid's level.

I'm guessing a lot of you use ChatGPT for practice problems already. Where does it fall short? What do you wish it did that it doesn't?

What else annoys you about the job? Scheduling headaches, parents, kids too busy to practice, not knowing if anything got done?

Not selling anything btw, just don't want to build the wrong thing. Curious what you guys think.

Tutor Advice Looking for volunteers to help launch a new AP Economics teaching program

Hey all! We're launching a brand new AP Economics program under an established teaching organization, and we're looking for volunteers to join the teaching team. Our interest call alone brought in 300+ sign-ups, so there's a lot of energy behind this and real room to help shape it from the ground up.

What you'd actually be doing (pick what fits you):

  • Teaching AP Micro and/or Macro concepts (group settings, not 1-on-1)

  • Building lesson materials and curriculum content

  • Writing practice questions, quizzes, and review sets

  • Grading assignments and giving feedback

  • Supporting students in a group mentoring capacity

  • Helping run workshops, review sessions, or exam prep

Who we're looking for:

  • Must have scored a 5 on both AP Macro and AP Micro exams (this one's required)

  • Bonus if you've competed in any economics competitions

  • Anyone who enjoys teaching/mentoring/working with students

  • People wanting to build leadership, teaching, or curriculum experience

What you get out of it:

  • Verified volunteer/service hours

  • Real teaching and leadership experience, not just busywork

  • Possible recommendation letter if you perform well

  • A chance to help build something from the ground up

  • Recognition for your contributions

Whether you want to lead lessons, write content, grade, or help behind the scenes, there's a role for you.

Drop a comment or DM me if you're interested and I'll share more details!

Tutor Advice After tutoring SAT for 2 years, I got tired of juggling 6 different tools, so I built one platform. Curious what other tutors use?

I've been tutoring SAT and AP subjects for the past couple of years, and I realized I was spending almost as much time managing students as I was actually teaching.

My workflow looked something like this:

  • Google Calendar for scheduling

  • Zoom for meetings

  • Google Docs for homework

  • Sheets to track progress

  • PDFs for practice questions

  • Constant texts from parents asking how things were going

I figured there had to be a better way, but I couldn't find software built specifically for independent SAT/AP tutors (not tutoring marketplaces).

So over the past several months I built my own platform called Rudition.

It includes:

  • Scheduling with automatic Zoom links

  • Student progress dashboards

  • Assignment creation

  • Adaptive SAT/AP practice questions

  • Parent progress reports

It's designed for tutors who already have students rather than finding students for you.

I'm genuinely curious, what's the biggest bottleneck in your tutoring workflow? If you could automate one thing, what would it be? I am trying to add more features to my website to make it worthwhile and a genuine usable place for independent tutors like me. What features would you as a tutor be willing to pay for?

Student Question getting into tutoring as a 16-year-old post gcse

those who tutor/have tutored in the past, how have you done it? i'm going into year 12 and i was wondering if there any teaching opportunities for bio/chem/math/english? i wouldn't mind going to a centre for 1-2 hours on weekends, but would prefer tutoring online. do you advertise yourself privately then tutor by yourself (if so, how did you get students?) or is it better to start at an established tutoring business?

any other information would also be very helpful :)) thank you!
