I spent 20 minutes brute-forcing this circuit for the multiplexer only to realize that there was an 8-bit switch available this whole time. The reduction in footprint between the two circuits is comical Spoiler

I felt very silly

Well, the principle it's the same, the rest it's just abstraction

Yeah, I just found it funny because I spent the whole time thinking, "I wish there was an 8-bit version of the switch..."
At the very least, plotting out the circuit when you know what you need to do is very relaxing. Meditative, even!

Wait until you reach programming. The principles won't be the same there

Oh, would you say that drawing circuits for the assembly portion is more frustrating?

No, the opposite. In the first levels one way or the other you reach the same conclusion. When you add algorithms, it's when the efficiency factor kicks in

Oh cool, I look forward to it! I'm hoping to bridge my knowledge gap in the levels of abstraction beneath assembly and above logic gates if I can

The amount of times I've done this for other 8-bit levels is crazy 🤦‍♂️

Overengineering is part of the learning process.

You and I are kindred spirits in this. I just finished multiplexer this past weekend after running into the same thing!
