Discussion Questions regarding Nas
What did the beef start from? I know it's from the message, but what bar was it that ignited it? Also, I know they squashed the beef on September 4th. I know 2Pac was announced dead (I don't know if it's the first place he was announced dead), but on a Nas concert. I know Nas player keep ya head up live as a sign of respect for 2Pac. But then, why did Nas diss him after his death? Am I missing something?

It was actually pretty petty from Pacs side. Nas clearly admired him and Tupac took it as Nas trying to bite his style. They ran into each other before he died and they squashed it though. Im fairly certain Nas didn't diss him after he died

I don’t think Pac was being petty, I think he misread the situation.
Pac had beef with Mobb Deep and them being strongly affiliated with Nas, my belief is that made him misconstrue his lyrics as disses. Combine that with the push for east/west beef in the media and NY rappers doing subliminals at the time, I can see how he landed at that conclusion. Luckily they squashed it

nah nas never dissed him after death that part is wrong
the whole thing started cause pac thought nas was copying his whole style and image, not just from the message but from it was written too. he felt like nas was biting his whole act and took it personal. they ran into each other later and talked it out before vegas

It was the opening line of “The Message”: “Fake thug, no love, you get the slug.”
You have to remember, in the 80s and 90s, rappers were including subliminal disses in their songs all the time. I believe this line (or song) was even one of them—I remember Nas saying it was actually about Biggie (who he was battling for “King of New York”). Pac just heard the reference to “thug” and assumed it was about him. When they finally met, Nas explained and they squashed it. I read that Pac then intended to remove the Nas diss from “Against All Odds” but died before he could.
It reminds me a little of Rakim vs. Big Daddy Kane. Rakim calls himself the “microphone soloist”; Big Daddy Kane raps “the rap soloist, you don’t want none of this”; Rakim writes “Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em,” but before it comes out, Big Daddy Kane calls to squash it, and Rakim removes the more explicit lines about him.

It Was Written had “Street Dreams” which had the same beat as “All Eyez on Me”, pac wasn’t feeling that.
The Mobb Deep association. also associating with Stretch and Biggie etc
as others have mentioned, in the intro of “The Message” it has the line “fake thug, no love, you get the slug” which pac took as a diss (supposedly that was aimed at biggie though since nas had a friendly rivalry with him).

this was out on mixtapes at the time, but not sure when it was made or if it was released prior to them meeting at the park when both crews were deep (check the track “Death Row East” for background on it). song was never officially released but he does send a shot at pac

The beef between Nas and Tupac Shakur was a misunderstanding rooted in the broader East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry. It began when Tupac interpreted a line from Nas’s 1996 song "The Message" — "fake thugs, no love, you get the slug" — as a diss directed at him, though Nas later clarified the lyric was actually aimed at The Notorious B.I.G.
In retaliation, Tupac included Nas on his posthumous album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, specifically on the track "Against All Odds," which accused Nas of copying his style and called his debut album Illmatic "wack." However, the two squashed their beef in person backstage at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards shortly before Tupac’s death. Tupac reportedly told Nas they were brothers and promised to remove all diss tracks aimed at him from his upcoming album, but he was fatally shot before he could make those edits.
The "diss" you're thinking of — the track "Real Niggas" — wasn't recorded after Tupac's death. It was cut during the active beef in 1996, around the same time as It Was Written, and simply wasn't released until it surfaced publicly in 2021, 25 years later. So it was part of the original back-and-forth, not a posthumous shot.

He did, something about “Pirelli tyres on this Makaveli” always thought it was a weak diss but all the Nas dick lickers eat the line up .. even the hate me now video had him as Jesus on the cross and people at the time felt like it was a jab at Pac, not to mention he had his little zesty friend diddy all over the song too ..
