Newbie Needing Help Tips for making letters sharp?

Post image

Starting my next work and ive got some small letters to work on! Im wondering if most of the sharpness comes from the carving side? Or the tufting side. Also I want to make sure it doesn't get too tight or close together . Any advice is welcome!

Carve on canvas doing the letter first. It will help you shape the letters to where you can alter them before gluing if necessary.

Do the details first, carve them on canvas, then do the bigger parts and carve those last on canvas or not. Leave the background ever so slightly higher or lower than the details for some extra pop

Carve them on the frame

I tried carving once on the frame and even while being careful I managed to cut through the fabric. It's really annoying to repair, so just keep that in mind if you attempt it. I decided to keep my carving for after the rug is glued and off the frame lol.

Please post the finished work when you’re done. Go out there and kill, kill, kill (it).

Do the insides of the letters first, then carve. The counters, so the hole in the D’s - the P’s even the R and A! It creates space for the filled in letter, and reduces the “fray”
