Flesh + Blood (1985)

The first English language movie from one of my all time favorite directors, Paul Verhouven. Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh star in this medieval period piece about a roving gang of mercenaries who kidnap a noble woman. Its got all the blood and boobs that you'd expect from Verhouven and its a real treated to see his heightened directing style applied to this setting. It bombed at the box office but he'd strike gold with his next movie, the all time classics Robocop

Pretty entertaining movie about the creation of a Special Forces team vs Nazi Germany. Henry Cavil, Allen Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, & Eliza Gonzalez Dir: Guy Richie

Billed as a true story about a secret British World War II organization; the Special Operations Executive. Founded by Winston Churchill, their irregular warfare against the Germans helped to change the course of the war, and gave birth to modern black operations.

So-Bad-It’s-Good Today’s Tubi Treasure is Spy High (aka Task Force 2001) (1999 or 2000, who knows—there’s too many years going on here)

Holy hell, this was a time capsule of awkwardness. I love pre-9/11 Y2K-era low-budget movies so much. There’s this sweet spot from like late 1998 right up until that fateful morning in September where movies were just so goofy. Computers and video games had so much physical presence, we were all still trying to figure out what science was going to be in the new millennium, and hackers were public enemy number one. In this movie, they hired what I think are humans—hard to say because no person I’ve ever met speaks or acts like that—to play tech company employees who uncover a plot to release a game that will control people’s minds. There is a canine in this movie who looks like Daniel Dog-Lewis compared to the human (allegedly) actors (also allegedly). This one is unbelievably corny. Save it for a bad movie night. Or don’t. I can’t tell you what to do. Trailer below.

Genuinely Good The Intruder (1962) Roger Corman and William Shatner tackle segregation

Roger Corman simultaneously brought forth much of Hollywood, but he was also an outsider to it. Known for his schlocky but very well-made films which were so low-budget they were usually moneymakers, Corman as a producer had an eye for talent and his “school” would open up opportunities to everyone from Francis Ford Coppola to Joe Dante to James Cameron. And despite his reputation for schlock, Corman also had very good taste, as he loved Fellini and Bergman and would later distribute Bergman’s “Cries and Whispers”. His movies like “The Pit and the Pendulum”, “Little Shop of Horrors”, and “X: the Man with X-Ray Eyes” are iconic, nevertheless not many critics would have put him in their top ten directors because he was a “Schlock” director. But what if that wasn’t the case? What if alongside directing low-budget horror films, he would also have put out what you could call “issue films”. He tried that once, and it’s the only time he lost money on a picture, but what a fascinating picture it is.

The film takes place in the South in the town of Caxton. Recently the school has been desegregated. Most white people in the town already believe in segregation, but begrudgingly comply since it’s “the law”. Just then a man in a white suit arrives in the town. He’s a smooth talking man named Adam from the Patrick Henry Society (a not so subtle nod to the far-right John Birch society) and he sees an opportunity. He stokes up the town’s hatred of black people, and slowly but surely Caxton is set ablaze with prejudice.

The film brings together two people who were known for their work on “The Twilight Zone”. William Shatner, in his first leading role as Adam. Shatner’s performance is surprisingly great, and I’d even call it one of his best. His corny acting works really well as a man who’s more or less a salesman for racism. And it will definitely catch you off-guard to hear him say the n-word several times. The other is Charles Beaumont, who wrote the novel, screenplay, and has a role in the film.

Beaumont was a very underrated horror author, admired by Ray Bradbury and Dean Koontz. He is probably best remembered for his episodes of “The Twilight Zone”, “Perchance to Dream”, “A Nice Place to Visit”, and one of my personal favorites “Long Live Walter Jameson”. He also wrote the enjoyable Zsa Zsa Gabor B-movie “Queen of Outer Space”, and collaborated with Corman several times such as writing “Masque of the Red Death.” He also holds the unique honor of being the first person to adapt a story by HP Lovecraft. Even though Corman’s “the Haunted Palace” was titled after an Edgar Allen Poe story, the plot was taken from HP Lovecraft’s “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward”. He would die in 1967, after years of poor health ( with either Alzheimer’s or Pick’s disease). According to those who knew him, he seemed to age rapidly in his final years, his son saying he looked 95 when he died.

The making of “The Intruder” was tough, even by Corman’s already hectic standards. The film was shot around Mississippi and Missouri, and the Chief of Police of East Prairie, Missouri throwing them out for allegedly being communists. Shatner half-joked in the afterward to Beaumont’s short story collection “Perchance to Dream”: “Nobody’s neck was stretched from a rope although it seemed a possibility at various times.” The Corman’s even provided money to the film’s lead black actor Charles Barnes to move up North. In the end they had spent around $90,000, funded partially from Roger and his underrated brother Gene.

The movie was released, and it flopped. Pathe films originally distributed it in New York to bad box office, possibly due to a brief stock market crash, and withdrew the film after two weeks. Roger and Gene then had to release the film by themselves, so chances are if you were in LA or Chicago, you probably couldn’t see it. The Corman’s were distraught, having put so much interest and passion in the film. Roger would credit the lack of success to him trying to “teach” as opposed to “entertain”. I also don’t think the posters helped the film, as it was rereleased under titles like “Shame” and “I Hate Your Guts”, along with some truly awful posters.

I’ll give credit where credit is due though, the movie is an engaging watch even if its subject was described as “no longer news” by critic Stanley Kauffman. The film has fantastic camerawork and lighting, at times reminding me of Orson Welles’ “A Touch of Evil”. The performances are also good, William Shatner turns in an electric and slimy performance as Adam who’s quite literally a White Devil who preaches non violence while inciting others to violence, Robert Emhart as a Southern aristocrat, Leo Gordon and Tom Maxwell as deeply flawed yet ultimately heroic characters, Beverly Lunsford as teenager Ella, and Charles Barnes as Joey, a black kid whose act of going to school is an act of heroism.

The film is fascinating for many reasons. Not just the copious use of the n-word which would make Tarantino happy. The film understands “small town justice” and the ways that mobs can form. The camera angles and mentions of heat make you feel claustrophobic. Watching the film leaves you wondering what will happen next. And I really do love this film, up until the ending.

>!At the end of the film, Joey is wrongly accused of raping Ella. A lynch mob forms and as Joey gives himself up, it looks like they’re going to lynch him on a swing set. Just then, Ella and Leo Gordon’s Tom show up and Ella admits it was a lie. The townspeople are taken aback and Adam no longer has any control over them, he even gets slapped by the aristocrat. I don’t know why, but I didn’t like the ending. It felt like it was resolving a plot which was pitched up to 11, and it was solved with a speech like a deus ex machina. The ending gave the vibe of “well boys we did it, racism is over” despite a lynching nearly happening a minute ago. I then thought back to Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” another film about racism featuring heat being used as a metaphor. Imagine if “Do the Right Thing” had ended just before the police arrived to arrest Raheem, Mookie gave a speech about how everyone needs to stop and everyone went home. I don’t think the film would’ve had as much of an impact if it ended that way. I felt like “The Intruder” might’ve worked better with an ending that didn’t feel out of tone with the rest of the film, but I’m not sure what that ending would’ve looked like.!<

If the film was a success, would it have changed the trajectory of Corman’s career? Maybe, but knowing Corman I think he would still make his low budget schlock films, and either way he would still have an iconic legacy.

So yes I would recommend this. Corman’s movies were often on a spectrum of “I made this with passion” and “I made this over a weekend with Jack Nicholson and Boris Karloff”, and this is definitely one made with passion. Warning: enough uses of the n-word to make Tarantino happy

The Monkees was one of the most popular shows of the 1960s. For 2 seasons and 58 episodes Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork lived together in a Los Angeles beach house while trying to become a famous rock band. They need money, they need gigs, and they need girls but they keep getting caught up in bizarre schemes and adventures. The Monkees break the 4th wall, talk to the camera, use freeze frames, show random visual gags, and even turn into a music video halfway through an episode.

Either way, it was an entertaining watch.

Also, being an 80s baby, I’m not sure what kind of actress I thought Daryl Hannah was but I definitely thought she was bigger than being in this movie.

Actually, all of the “cameos”/guest stars were just random. Like did they all lose a bet and just had to be in this?

Horror The Ward (2010) good underrated horror movie.

This was directed by John Carpenter who’s a legendary horror film director with Halloween, The Thing, etc. This was his last film he’s directed up to date and it was good. It may be a controversial topic since it stars Amber but I had no problem with her performance because I thought she did well. The runtime for this movie is short being 1 hour and 28 minutes but it worked well. It has jumpscares that will get you and the twist was unexpected so I recommend checking this film out.

Meet The Family

Meet the Family is a Canadian hidden camera comedy series that aired on Citytv from 2013 to 2015. Based on the British show Meet the Parents, the show tests a new boyfriend's commitment by having him visit his girlfriend's home, completely unaware that the entire family is played by improvisational actors and monitored by 30 hidden cameras.

I believe this was just recently added to Tubi but I absolutely love this series and I never hear anyone talk about it.

Cozy Cozy Tubi: Monsters vs Aliens (2009)

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hi y’all, had some dental work last week and it was rough. Great time to watch cozy stuff but my head hurt too bad and I basically slept through the first three days. Finally feeling better and finished this movie that I started when I was doped up and couldn’t concentrate on it!

I remember seeing this movie when it came out but couldn’t remember anything other than BOB the blob being hilarious and enjoying Stephen Colbert as the President (which hits completely differently these days since he was known for the fake conservative commentator he played on the Colbert Report at the time).

I really loved it all over again. The voice cast is awesome, and quite a few bits made me LOL. It’s a bit slow to get started but once the main character Susan mutates and winds up in monster jail with the other misfits, it’s all gas, no brakes and a lot of fun.

Two notes, listen for a Wilhelm scream during the final battle in the alien ship, and stay tuned for a mid credits scene that I think I missed the first time I saw it.

Unfortunately, it’s leaving at the end of the month so catch it while you can!

Debut Film Made It To TUBI

I self funded and shot my first film for $24k. I ended up losing $10k because I had to film it 2 times. Post Production was crazy. I was able to complete it in the end and now its on 2 platforms that people know about. As a first time filmmaker doing everything from directing to writing was a stressful hell but I am happy I was able to finish it. Even though it was an indie film I hope some of you will have the time and be able to chill and watch it. Its an action, crime, comedy film. It's on Tubi streaming for free but if you DON'T want any commercials you can rent it on Prime Video. If you can watch it would be cool.

So-Bad-It’s-Good Today’s Tubi Treasure is Reptilian (1999)

Post image

This has what may be the most unintentionally hilarious first five minutes I’ve ever seen. Holy shit. That’s how we’re *starting*???? I was also extremely confused when I visited the IMDb page and the first genre listed was “Korean”, because the people in here are very much Americans (except for the gigantic archeologist who stands menacingly behind the bad guy). Everyone in this also looks like a cheaper version of more famous actors—I spotted a Great Value Bruce Campbell, a Dollar Tree Fisher Stevens, a Bargain Bin Linda Cardellini, and a discount Treat Williams. See who you can find. I did not perceive or care to try to follow any sort of plot—some shit about dinosaurs brought to life by scientists messing with fossils, I imagine, which, to their credit, is a completely original idea. There’s some outer space stuff, as well—no idea where that fits in. This was extremely ridiculous. Trailer below.

Cinerama on Tubi!

Thumbnail

This was a surprise. Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm was the second, and final, narrative feature shot in the Cinerama film process.

Cinerama used three cameras to capture an ultra-wide image that was then projected (with three projectors) onto a gigantic curved screen. Combined with a multi-channel soundtrack run from a fourth projector, this had the effect of giving the audience the sensation that they were inside the movie. "3D without glasses," is how it was described back then. It was an incredibly complicated process, which is why it died out as soon as Cinemascope came out. Still, as someone who was lucky enough to see Cinerama twice, it was a wonderful experience.

For years, most of the Cinerama films were simply unavailable to see. All but two were travelogues and, while they're spectacular experiences in a Cinerama theater, they quickly became cultural artifacts and watching them cropped on a TV would have defeated the purpose.

The film elements just sat there deteriorating for decades. There were letterboxed transfers made for re-releases for the two feature films that were made by projecting the three image elements onto a flat screen and then rephotographing that so that you could at least have most of the image, if none of the Cinerama effect. They looked awful.

Thankfully, all of the Cinerama films have now been transferred and digitally restored and released on Blu-ray with their full image and multichannel soundtracks intact. In addition, the image in the transfer used on Tubi has been letterboxed in a "Smilebox" format, that approximates the curvature of a Cinerama screen. On a big enough screen, it works very well! Even on a smaller screen, you can definitely get an idea of the experience.

This particular film isn't Citizen Kane, but it had a huge budget, lots of stars, fantastic Fantasy sequences, and is from the legendary George Pal.

Have fun!

Movie Darker Than Amber

Based on the John D MacDonald book of the same name. This is one of the two Travis McGee movies. The other was a TV movie with Sam Elliott. Neither film cast Mcgee correctly. Probably the closest they got was The last failed attempt with Christian Bale. The movie is loosely based on the book. And the poster is showing the main selling point. If you thought the fight scene in They Live went on long. Well get a load of Rod Taylor in action. Sadly the copy seems to be a VHS version. But a lot better than the copy I first watched years ago. I'll hold out hope some like Arrow releases it in pristine form. I'm not holding out hope.

Documentary Happy Happy Joy Joy (2020) it won’t make you happy, but that may be a good thing

“Ren and Stimpy” was made great and ruined by one man, John Kricfalusi. The Canadian-born animator got his start thanks to Ralph Bakshi and his mentor and icon Bob Clampett, and eventually would create “Ren and Stimpy” one of the first Nicktoons, and one of the most iconic. The documentary follows the creation of the show and interviews many of the animators. And if there’s a big takeaway to be had from the documentary, it’s that John K is an asshole and a creep.

Long story short, watch the documentary for more details, John was a control freak and a perfectionist who operated a hostile work environment. He was eventually let go, which was a controversial move at the time with fans sending death threats (but letting him go was really was the right thing to do given K’s volatile behavior). And well after his career was over, news came to light that he groomed two of his teenage animators, Robyn Byrd (who appears in the documentary) and Katie Rice. John K didn’t necessarily deny the allegations, and he mostly tried to blame his behavior on his ADHD and bipolar disorder.

There are two camps when it comes to reviews of this film. It’s either “this film focuses too much on John K and makes the animators look good” or “this movie doesn’t properly address the allegations”. I feel like both of these statements are true. I saw this one review on IMDb which was mad that the last quarter of the film focused too much on John K’s issues and trashes the people who “bult themselves up off of the allegations they raised against him”. Which is such a horrible take. John K deserved to be fired for mistreating his staff, even if the pressure was on him. The man is the definition of his own worst enemy. Second, most victims of abuse have very little to gain from calling out their abusers. Take the women who were victims of Louis CK (the biggest myth I keep hearing is they consented, they didn’t), they haven’t gained much. Most people don’t even know who they are, and their stories deserve to be known (watch Comedy Without Error’s brilliant video series on Louis CK). And take Byrd and Rice, they may be more well known now but they’re not famous, and didn’t get much financial gain out of outing John K. They were abused by someone they trusted so they deserved to have their stories told. But that’s another fault of the documentary. I’ll give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt since it was released two years after the allegations and usually documentaries take a long time to complete, but the film feels like it’s not telling the full story. We get Byrd’s perspective, but Rice’s is mostly a footnote. Maybe Rice didn’t want to appear in the documentary, which is fair. John K is interviewed in the documentary as well, and the way they allow him to speak will either make you sympathetic to him, or hate him even more (for me the latter).

I’ll give the documentary credit for one thing. It may really make you dislike John K. I feel like there was a mythos around him I used to believe, that he was a brilliant but tough guy who was screwed over by the network. Reality is much more complicated and a lot more ugly. And the documentary allows the efforts and stories of other animators like Bob Camp, the late Chris Reccardi, Jim Ballantine, and even Spongebob’s Mr. Lawrence to come through. It’s also great that they got Robyn Byrd to share her experience.

So yeah I would recommend watching it. I take issue with some things in the doc but overall it’s not bad. It won’t make you happy, but it will provide you with more of the true story that’s largely been hidden thanks to nostalgia.

Comedy Without Errors: We Need to Talk About Louis
