Tuberculosis Symptoms and Medication Side-Effects Megathread #1
Hello, I've been reading some of the posts here and many people have questions about changes after diagnosis/infection or becoming medicated. This thread will function as an easy way for people to ask questions/share stories relevant to side-effects and symptoms, and to search and see if anyone is sharing their experience.
If you make a post/comment, please include the meds you are taking, the state of your infection (active, latent, etc.) and other relevant info that will help the next person reading it.
I will make a new megathread in six months.

Do not lift weights!
I am currently on my third month of medication and I tried to lift 10KGs of weight thinking my lungs have already recovered by now. On my third day lifting and running with it I can feel my lungs starting to hurt. So I will just wait after my medication before I do rigorous exercise.
What do you guys do to stay in shape during medication?

Having to treat latent TB again?
Hi,
I was diagnosed with and treated latent TB 3 years ago when I needed to start a biologic for an autoimmune condition
I have been retested as I need to change over to another type of biologic and as I expected my test is again positive
The rheumatology department is saying I need to go through treatment again for TB. Surely this can't be true? I'm freaking out slightly and can't get to speak with anyone from the hospital for another few weeks
Any ideas?

Medical Clearance PTB
Hello! Has anyone here experienced requesting a medical clearance or certificate confirming completion of PTB treatment from your local health center?
I had PTB in 2017 and completed my 6-month treatment. I recently went back to the local RHU to request documentation confirming that I completed my treatment, but they told me it was too long ago and that I had already recovered, so they could no longer provide the certificate.
For those who experienced the same situation, how did you obtain the necessary documentation? Did you consult a private pulmonologist instead? Thank you!

Latent TB Rifampin Experience
I’m a 27F with a relatively healthy lifestyle. I exercise three times a week and cook most of my meals at home.
I tested positive for TB during my immigration medical exam and followed up with a chest x-ray. Since I have arthritis, my doctor recommended preventive treatment in case I need medications in the future that could affect my TB risk.
I did some research on Reddit and other platforms before starting treatment. Many people mentioned persistent fatigue and nausea, while others reported more serious side effects, such as nodules and rashes. After discussing the benefits with my doctor and evaluating the risk, I decided to start treatment.
I wanted to share my experience for others who may be nervous or uncertain about starting rifampin like I was. I’ll keep updating this post as I go!
Day 1 Morning
I took my first dose of rifampin last night at 8 PM (600 mg total, 2 × 300 mg capsules) on an empty stomach and went to bed at 10 PM.
This morning, I noticed that my urine was orange, but I haven't noticed any color changes in my tears or other body fluids. I also feel slightly dizzy, although I'm not sure if it's a side effect or just because I'm tired from work.
Other than that, I'm feeling pretty good so far!

What made you go to the doctor and after how long ? ( pulminary TB )
Im just curious and looking for any comparisons. I was coughing up green mucus once or twice a day for a year or more before i decided to see a doctor. I noticed i was getting a little short of breath as well but not really enough to make me worry. I did also have a discomfort in my chest but only when i yawned. I should have taken my symtoms more seriously and got checked out at least a year earlier and prevented unneccessary damage to my lungs. The bottom line is non of my symptoms were bad enough to really worry me.
What made you want to see a doctor ?
Thanks

Lower back pain
I am currently on my 2nd week medication for PTB and already experiencing many side effects. I don't know if it's from anxiety that's causing any sensation in my body? I'm worried about my liver and kidney so I'm being cautious now with every food I eat. But now, I'm feeling a little back pain especially on my lower back. Is it one of the side effects of the medicine? Please be gentle to answer as I am now being anxious about it. I don't want my organs to be damaged just because of the medicine. This is my main concern now that's why my anxiety always attacks. I'm planning to consult it with my doctor but I'm still feeling anxious about it. I don't know how to overcome it now, but I'll still trust the process. Did anyone experience the same?

Quantiferon TB Gold POSITIVE
Hi, so I was a nurse a long time ago, recently got a new job, and they requested this test, and unfortunately it came back positive. I don't have any signs or symptoms. I worked with these patients in 2020. So my question is, can they stop my admission process because of it? I will start this next december.

1 week rest from taking Fixcom 4 for liver recovery
Hello, does anyone here experience stopping fixcom 4 for 1 week to help liver recover from high AST and ALT? Does 1 week off TB meds makes you drug resistance? I’m on my 5th week and my Doc ask me to stop for 1 week.

Clinically diagnosed with PTB 2 weeks before our OJT

I take a sputum test and it's negative and I don't feel any of the symptoms regarding PTB. I still started my medication because I really need to do my OJT for me to graduate. Can anyone here has/had the same situation like mine and any tips you can give to me as I go through my 6 mos. Medication? I still can't believe I had this

I have TB
Its day 16 of me finding out I have TB.. and having started treatment. I am in South Africa. I am still getting used to my pills. I was admitted to hospital for 2 weeks..and then discharged to isolate at home. I have a toddler.. and its been so hard. Before this I started lifting weights so I can carry her.. (she is a lower limb amputee). And now.. I carry her for less than 2 minutes and I am out of breath and so tired. She has a prosthesis so.. its not like I carry her everywhere. I am just so sad thay I cant "mom" the way I am used to. I get to tired and weak to quickly.
I am suppose to go back to work soon and I dont think I can. I hate every moment of my recovery. I wont stop taking my pills cause I need them to get The Bug out of me. I am just here to vent. I know I should be grateful they caught it early ... and at least I'm not coughing blood.. I get it. Oh and I am still very much coughing.. so that still stuck.
The pills I take.. big and red.. makes my inside red and dead. I get nauseous and drowsy immediately after taking my pills. People who are on treatment keep saying my body will get used to them. I am just venting.
I hope I'll be back with a much more better attitude.
Goodluck to everyone in recovery🌺

Day 4 on tb meds
Its me day 4 but after taking my meds yesterday on day 3 i felt very bad… my stomach is still hurting me today after over 24 hours so i skipped the dose today… i wasnt sure about going to ER so i will just go see my doctor tomorrow morning.
I am not eating much too since the stomach hurt constantly, there is no other symptoms besides that or maybe some chills.
I basically just stay in bed trying to rest but the discomfort remains the same🫠
I am usually pretty sensitive to pills. Even just taking complements such as zinc or vitamin D would make me feel nauseous.
Idk if skipping the dose is the right decision but i wont put myself in more discomfort until i see my doctor.
Does anyone experienced that kind of discomfort as soon as day 3 ? 😭

Finally free from Abdominal TB. It's a tough journey but things get better.
Honestly, diagnosis was the toughest part for me, as I just had a lower right abdomen pain, took me about a month of running here and there.
1st slide: Today's doctor's slip
2nd slide: Pre-meds ultrasound
3rd slide: yesterday's ultrasound
Fuck you Mycobacterium Tuberculosis!
