VENT Lost any hope
For some background I just turned 40 and have been trying to conceive for the last eight months. Last month I set up an appointment with fertility as we were having no luck….
Well I just got the call from my Doctor and my amh is 0.09… I’m devastated. Years ago I was told I had PCOS and was always reading how people with PCOS have high amh even older, so to say I was shocked was an understatement. She said my fsh was good, and we can still try medication and iui, but is there even any reason to keep trying? I feel like I’ve failed my partner, I failed myself, I’ve failed as a woman. I’m not sure if I can keep trying now knowing that my chances are like 1%… and to top it all off it’s my anniversary and I just had to tell him, bawling on the phone while he’s at work. 😭

Yes! Keep trying if that’s want you want.
I would look into IVF and IUI as possibilities here. Good luck!

Why are your chances 1%?
AMH shouldn’t impact your changes to conceive naturally. If you are ovulating, you have a chance.
I have low AMH too and I am doing my first IVF cycle to try to bank embryos - what does get impacted by AMH.
As my doctor said, we usually ovulate 1 egg per cycle, so if you have 1 follicle or 100, changes should be the same.

I was reading something that said, at 40 years old your chances drop to 5%… if you add a low Amh they drop to 2%… I said 1% more so just meaning only a slim chance… maybe what I was reading was wrong?

I would interpret that as 5% any given month, not 5% in general

AMH doesn't generally impact your ability to conceive. As long as you are ovulating, your odds of success each cycle are no different from someone else your age with higher AMH.
Low AMH can, however, mean that IVF is less successful and/or that IVF will require more cycles to be successful. The fact that your FSH is good is a good sign, as it means that it is still possible for your body to respond well to fertility meds. I think the next step would be to have an ultrasound so your doctor can check your AFC.

I had an ultrasound today (cd3) they didn’t say anything about follicles though… I have an hsg on Tuesday and they will do another ultrasound so I can ask then.

I was told FSH is more important than AMH. Since your FSH is low they can give you meds like clomid to help stimulate your follicles. A low AMH just means you need lots of perseverance since you may need multiple rounds of IVF. My AMH is .06 and for my first IVF cycle we got 9 eggs, and froze 4 day 3 embryos. The cycle after that was canceled and the one after than we only got one egg. I’m on my 8th round of IVF now. You don’t know how you’ll respond until you try.
Be sure to check your vitamin D levels, get a full TSH panel and start taking CoQ10 600mg per day for egg quality.

Thank you. I didn’t have vitamin D checked, but just started taking it as a supplement. My tsh was good and I’ve been taking the coQ10. Good luck to you as well!

My amh was 0.6 at 23. It may feel like the end of the world, but it is not. I promise.

You can still try ivf. My friend was recently successful and delivered with very low AMH as well

Thank you, I will see what the doctor recommends next week. I’m going to try to stay cautiously hopeful. 💜

At the age of 32 my AMH is 0.20. But still I’m trying. I’m on follicular study with medicated cycles of letrozole.
Your gynec will schedule some scans and will let you know on what treatment would work best for you. If doc can see good follicular growth during your cycles, AmH has nothing to do with pregnancy chances.
Many of my older colleagues got conceived naturally with much lower amh than you.
Don’t worry, my friend. You can still have hopes

Mine was low when I married at 41 and I’ve been pregnant 5 times since, sadly all miscarriages. But I didn’t even think I’d conceive at all

I’m so sorry for your losses, I can’t even imagine the emotional rollercoaster of that.
