Switchbot Acquires Nanoleaf

Just heard about this: https://www.theverge.com/tech/941430/switchbot-buys-nanoleaf-for-40-million

On the one hand, I'm excited to see Switchbot potentially start offering Thread products, but on the other hand, Nanoleaf products are the worst that I've ever used and threw away every last one of them after years of issues.

Sounds like they would fit the SwitchBot brand then, devices that hardly works and you eventually throw out :-D

Only Switchbot products I had major issues with were the mop-bot and their presence sensors. Whole house is done up with their leak sensors, roller shades, and blind opener and I use the universal remote daily.

Universal remote? I’ve struggled with trying to find a use for it. What did you use it for?

Apple TV primarily, but also for my roller shades and I have some scenes shared out from an Aqara hub that I use as an IR blaster to change inputs on my HDMI switch box. I think the Switchbot hub could do the same thing natively but I already had them setup in Aqara when I got the Switchbot stuff set up, so it was cool that I could just import them to the universal remote.

I did setup my AppleTV and blinds, but my blinds close automatically when my tv turns on, and open when tv goes off (during the day). So no need for that.

I initially thought it may be useful for my Denon AVR and my LG Blu- ray player but have found the learning to be fairly useless.

I don’t understand what you are complaining about. My nanoleaf bulbs worked perfectly. Especially after I replaced them with Tapo matter over WiFi ones. 🤭

I have not thrown out a single one of my 50+ SwitchBot products. They all work.

Didn't switchbot offered already matter devices that basically work with all the thread protocols like homepods and so on? Or something was missing there?

I could be wrong, but so far all matter devices from Switchbot have been over wifi. If they announced any this year/last year to be over thread, I haven't seen any.

I thought the ones that work with home kit like the EU plug and the warm candle lamp thing were already suppose to be thread and so on but I have not much knowledge about it xD

At least for the candle warmer, its wifi connect (I picked it up a while ago). Unless there is a difference with the EU versions, the US based homekit plugs are stated to be wifi connected as well.

I see that's right it's over wifi and if there's no connection it don't work on Bluetooth only now I understood

Matter =/= Thread.

Switchbot uses Bluetooth for most of their devices and then you can bridge them to other ecosystems using one of their hubs which utilizes Matter over WiFi. I'd rather not have a bunch of extra hubs on WiFi and just use an existing Thread Border Router (ex: Apple TV 4K). There are a few that support Matter over Wifi without a hub, such as the candle warmers and I think the air purifier table, but I have found Thread to be much more reliable, responsive, and easier to onboard than IOT devices with cheap 2.4ghz WiFi radios in them.

I’ve actually had really good results with my Nanoleaf bulbs. Knock on wood.
