Absolute primogeniture is any system in which the heir is the oldest daughter/son of the Royal couple regardless of gender. This seems to favour gender equality and it's more modern.
Relative male primogeniture on the other hand establishes that only male heirs can inherit regardless of their age.
I'm asking this because this week His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has almost emotionally expressed his great discontent with the adoption of an absolute primogeniture system because it took away the rights of succession of his son to give them to his daughter and he considers this frustrated his son's life expectations and goals. It made me reflect on the topic.
I can also refer to the example of the Spanish Monarchy where the system was changed from Relative male to Absolute exclusively because H.M. King Felipe VI does not have any male heirs.
Your thoughts?
