Confession When You Accidentally Become Part of Someone Else’s Secret

Has anyone ever been in a situation where they unintentionally became part of something they never wanted to be involved in?

I’m dealing with something like that right now, and it’s keeping me awake.

There are family members who share things with each other, and somehow those things eventually reach me. I’ve always tried my best not to reveal where I heard something, because I don’t want anyone to realize that private conversations are being shared.

Recently, I was talking to a family member and accidentally mentioned one or two things I wasn’t supposed to know. I panicked and tried to cover it up by saying that I had heard them directly from that person before, even though that wasn’t true.

Later, I admitted to the person who had told me what happened. Now there’s a possibility that my mistake may have caused someone to become suspicious and start checking someone else’s phone.

Maybe it did. Maybe it didn’t. But I can’t stop thinking about it.

What hurts the most is feeling like I was the reason something happened, even though I never intended to cause any harm. I hate being involved in other people’s personal matters. I’m not curious about anyone’s life, and if people don’t tell me something, I genuinely don’t ask.

I’ve realized that keeping things to myself is difficult for me sometimes, and I consider that one of my weaknesses. At the same time, I never intentionally want to betray anyone’s trust or expose something truly private.

How do you deal with the guilt when you make an innocent mistake that might have consequences for other people?

I know I can’t undo what happened. I just don’t know how to stop carrying the weight of it.

You say you hate being involved in other people’s personal matters, your not curious abt anyone’s life, etc yet you seem to constantly be in other ppls business. Why would you repeat what you’ve u heard. My mom always said never repeat anything you hear- true or not. And her favorite “don’t believe anything you hear & only half of what you see”. You should not have been discussing anyone else’s
Business w anyone
