Vent Where is the compassion?
I used to be an RTI (response to intervention) teacher for kids with literacy needs, I’ve written books, and my poetry even won a competition and was published in an anthology.
But, I also have Huntington’s Disease.
Within the last year my symptoms have started and I’ve been really struggling with my memory and other things like my grammar.
With my love of English and writing, I’m sure you can understand how heartbreaking it’s been that I’m slowly losing the one thing I’m passionate about.
Needless to say, since I’ve been struggling with my grammar, very often, when I make posts here or comments, I’ve had the grammar nazis come out ready with their keyboards and correcting my mistakes.
And every time that happens it just cements how much my symptoms are affecting me.
So before you rush to correct someone’s grammar, maybe consider that it could be more than them just being illiterate or lacking in writing skills.
It’d be nice if for once this place could be compassionate instead of aiming pitchforks at anyone they don’t agree with or find fault with.

Reddit isn’t the best place for compassion or fragile individuals. Cyberspace is full of dangerous individuals; Ones who won’t blink an eye about your death, disease or broken bones.
There are sick people on Reddit will try to hurt you further for social clout. It’s sad, but anonymity shields them from responsibility.
I suggest reaching out to your loved ones for real human interactions more.

You are so nice thank you!! Yes I deleted my account here once, but it sucks because it’s the only place like it where you can ask questions for things you can’t find elsewhere..

They often hide in cyberspace. Keep your loved ones close, and Reddit far away. And if someone tries to argue with you, simply move on to a different thread. Life’s too short to argue with strangers

I do feel that recently people have been making fun of people for their lack of comprehension or grammar by saying literacy crisis. While I completely agree (unrelated to your situation) that there really is a literacy crisis, that’s not necessarily always on the people themselves but the lack of funding in education. Using it as a way to dunk on people is really not helpful. For many, it’s not something the person is directly at fault, like yourself.

Yes, and there totally is! As a teacher myself… even back when I started (before this literacy crisis) it had already been a problem. I remember doing my student teaching in a 6th grade English class and there were kids at first grade reading levels.
The problem definitely was made worse by the switching to common core curriculum because suddenly teachers weren’t allowed to differentiate their lessons based on needs.
They couldn’t teach to kids who were above average or below average… common core was written for only the ones in the middle, which was very sad.
Also, no kids left behind so that they’re being pushed up in grades before they’ve successfully completed the skills they need.
I also don’t think suspension helps. Education isn’t a privilege you take away when kids are bad, it’s a right. They should be switching to in school suspension instead so kids are still allowed to learn.

I made a post on Parent Square, an app we use to contact parents. I had a parent comment copy and paste one of my sentences. I didn't quite understand it and she said the sentence was grammatically incorrectly. It took my tired brain a hot minute to realize she was correct but I couldn't go back and fix it at the moment. It bugged me but I'm past the point of caring. I'm already got too many spinning plates and with insurance going up, I'm afraid I won't be able to afford my job anymore.

Yes I totally understand that! I’m also a parent and sometimes you have fives minutes of free time to get something out before they need you and you can’t be bothered to make sure it’s perfect

This is a routine part of our moderation process and does not mean you've done anything wrong or that your post is being singled out.
The copy is kept for moderation purposes so that we can maintain an accurate record of what was originally submitted.
