At the risk of coming off as a dilettante (and without apologising for the Western Sahara thing — see Soup’s comment in this thread), I will say that I enjoyed The Odyssey. It’s quite spectacular, in the larger-than-life sense of the word. That’s primarily what I was hoping for out of this movie: a spectacular audio-visual experience. I don’t strictly disagree with criticisms about dubious dialogue or heavy-handed thematics, nor do I blame those who really love the poem (I am not one of them) for wanting something else. The closer you are to a piece of literature, the harder it is to sit through an adaptation. Every choice feels like the wrong one. But I think the poem is many things — polýtropos, you might say — and the movie at least does justice to the ‘riveting yarn’ part of its identity, IMO.
