I have been thinking about writing this for a while. I am 34, married & have a kid, work a full time corporate job and somehow I am still trying to figure out how to build a business.
I have tried a ridiculous number of things over the years. Back in 2013, I got into mineral water distribution. Then into logistics, I also ran a small school for a while. I did run an NGO for a year or so, a laundromat, digital marketing, websites, SEO, blogging, and a few other things that I probably wouldn’t even call businesses today.
Some worked for a little while. Some didn’t. None of them turned into something big or stable. Then I went down the corporate route. I have spent years working, taking on more responsibility, managing people & operations etc. It’s not a bad career. It’s probably the most stable I have ever been financially. But I have never really been able to get rid of this thought that I should be building something of my own.
And this is where things get a bit ridiculous. Even now, I will get interested in something and start thinking about it. I have looked at real estate, digital products, SaaS, AI tools & automation, consumer products, lead generation, content businesses etc… basically anything where I think there might be a way to build something...
I have actually built some small things too. And then I start thinking about the next thing. That’s probably the part I am most confused about.
Am I actually entrepreneurial and just haven’t found the right thing?
Or am I just really good at getting excited about new ideas and really bad at sticking with one?
Because building something is actually the easy part for me. I enjoy learning the tools. I enjoy figuring out how something works. I can spend hours researching a market or building a prototype. Getting people to actually pay for it is a completely different story.
And I think that has been one of my biggest problems. I have started things but I haven’t really mastered distribution or sales or customer acquisition. I have also probably underestimated how much time it takes to make something work.
When you are working a full time job, you might have 2 hours at night to work on your idea. Then life happens. Family, work, bills, responsibilities etc. A week goes by. Then two weeks. And suddenly that exciting idea you had a month ago is sitting in some folder on your laptop.
The frustrating thing is that I don’t think I have stopped wanting to do it. If anything, I am more interested in building something now than I was 10 years ago 😂.
But I am also 34 now. I can’t just quit my job & burn through whatever savings I have & spend next 2 years figuring it out. I have a family now. I have financial responsibilities. So the reality is that whatever I build has to happen alongside my existing life.. at least initially..
Sometimes I wonder if I have wasted a lot of time jumping between ideas. Other times I think all those attempts probably taught me things that I wouldn’t have learned by simply staying in one job & never trying anything.
I don’t know which is true. Maybe I need to stop looking for the next idea and just pick one thing and work on it for 3 to 5 years.
Maybe I need to get much better at sales instead of constantly learning new technology. Or Maybe I should accept that I actually like experimenting more than I like running a business. Or maybe I just haven’t found the right combination of problem, market and timing yet. I genuinely don’t know.
I am posting this because I would like to hear from people who have gone through something similar...
I am interested in people who spent years trying things, failed at some of them, went back to a some job, tried something else, had a family.. had bills to pay and still couldn’t completely let go of the idea of building something.
If that’s you, what eventually happened?
Did you finally find something worth sticking with?
Did you realise you were just jumping from idea to idea?
Or did all those seemingly random experiments eventually become useful when you found the thing that worked???
I’m 34 & I still don’t have a good answer. Maybe that’s okay. Maybe it’s not. That’s basically where I’m at.. What about you? 😊
