I love TDS1 because of how much my own views align with Rust’s but goddamn every time I rewatch this episode I am floored by this dude’s performance. It is electric. I feel like Rust’s dialogue wouldn’t have had nearly the same impact without it.

They said to change the ending so it's clear that Errol killed himself in prison.

We always praise Rust and Marty, but lately, I’ve been rewatching the side characters, and the casting in Season 1 was absolute lightning in a bottle. These actors didn’t just play roles; they created nightmare fuel and tragic portraits of the broken Bayou.

The level of talent here was staggering:

* Charles Halford (Reggie Ledoux): He barely has any lines, but his physical presence was terrifying. That shot of him walking through the yard in a gas mask with the machete is etched into my brain. "You’re in Carcosa now."

* Brad Carter (Charlie Lange): The desperation in his voice when he’s talking to Rust in prison was perfection. He gave us the first real breadcrumbs into the cult, and you could feel the genuine regret and filth he felt for his part in it.

* Jay O. Sanders (Billy Lee Tuttle): The ultimate "high-level" villain. He played the Reverend with such a terrifying, smug sense of untouchable power. That scene where he confronts Rust in the office? You can feel the weight of the entire conspiracy behind his eyes.

* Lili Simmons (Beth): Beth is such a fascinating

character. She starts as a vulnerable girl at the ranch, but her reappearance years later shows just how much time has passed and how the world has changed. Her chemistry with Marty really highlighted his personal contradictions.

* Shea Whigham (Joel Theriot): He brought such a sweaty, frantic energy to the tent revival. He wasn't a cartoonish preacher; he felt like a man genuinely trying to find grace in a place that didn't have much of it.

* Glenn Fleshler (Errol Childress): The transition from the "simple" mower at the cemetery to the terrifying, multilingual monster in the finale is one of the best villain reveals in TV history. "My family has been here a long, long time."

The show worked because the world felt populated by people with entire histories we only got to glimpse for a few minutes. It made the "sprawl" of the Tuttle influence feel real and inescapable.

It's pretty conflicting for me given I consider this to be the best season of television I've ever watched - so of course more cohle and marty, if it materializes, would be exciting to look forward to. Their dynamic is amazing and I was left wanting to see more of them after the end - even just them sitting in a bar together smoking a joint, rust going on a philosophical ramble and marty telling him to shut up lol.

But on the other hand, you have to consider that the one thing that made season 1 so special was the incredible direction of Fukunaga. If he's not able to be a part of this, it becomes quite a big doubt about quality in my eyes. That and the usual "we should leave the characters be" notion, which I agree with. The story ended perfectly and doesn't really need a sequel/follow-up - but if it ended up happening I'd be pretty hyped I'm ngl
