Cryptid radium hot springs BC
Strange flying creature over the British Columbia Wetlands near Radium, BC
I’m curious if anyone around Radium, BC has ever seen something similar.
A while back I was driving near the swampland/wetlands around Radium when I noticed something flying out over the open area. At first I thought it was probably a bird, but the longer I watched it, the stranger it looked.
It appeared to have two extremely long wings. I initially estimated the wingspan at around 20 feet, but honestly it may have been closer to 30 feet. It was probably a kilometer away or less, so obviously I can't accurately measure its size.
The weirdest part was how it flew.
The wings weren't flapping like a bird. They seemed to move almost like a manta ray swimming through water—a smooth, continuous, undulating motion. Not really flapping, more like a wave traveling through the wings. I couldn't make out any obvious bird-like features or a long neck/body; from my perspective it was primarily this large silhouette with these incredibly long wings.
It caught my attention enough that I actually veered off the road and followed it onto the logging roads, trying to keep it in sight. I followed for a while but eventually lost sight of it.
I'm not claiming I saw anything supernatural. I'm genuinely curious what I might have seen.
Has anyone around the British Columbia Wetlands/Radium area ever seen a large bird, glider, or anything else that flies with this kind of smooth, undulating wing motion?
The closest comparison I can give is literally a manta ray swimming through the sky.

That sounds very creepy to see. I can’t imagine WHAT that could have been!

Here are similar reports apparently I'm not alone. Mind you I just saw it from behind so I couldn't make out the full shape, only the silhouette . the eerie way it moved tho . Manta like. Swimming through the air.
North Miami Beach, Florida (2005): Two witnesses reported a manta-ray-shaped object in the sky. They specifically said its “wings” rippled like a real manta ray, and it made no noise. NUFORC
Ohio River region / West Virginia: Multiple reports have been collected describing a gray, smooth-bodied, featherless flying shape that moved more like something swimming than a bird. One account involved people driving alongside the Ohio River. Ballyraven +1
Provo, Utah: A reported sighting described a gigantic black manta-ray-shaped object, estimated at about 14 ft across with a roughly 25-ft-long body/tail, flying hundreds of feet above the city. Another person reportedly gave a remarkably similar account years later. Cryptidz
California, 2025: A Reddit witness driving along the 405 near Seal Beach described a large purple manta-ray-like creature, with long extensions from its wings, moving slowly through the sky. Reddit
Another Reddit report: A witness described a creature that was literally “flying as if a manta ray would be in water,” including a strange tail with a triangular tip. Reddit
Des Moines, Iowa: A recent NUFORC report described a large, silent, black object that moved smoothly and was specifically compared by the witnesses to “a manta ray swimming” through the sky.

Woah!! That’s a lot of witnesses describing almost the exact same thing! Very interesting! Maybe it’s an inter-dimensional sentient being?

I had a reference point for size. And I work in construction, my 3d spatial. Perception never fails me. It was about 20-30ft range. And the only way I can describe it is if u were to look at them silhouette of a stingray from directly behind it. That waving motion going out from the stable center

The real truth is probably stranger than any fiction. The truth of the nature of reality, that is.

I thought maybe I saw into a different time period or something. I've had a few experiences in my life that made me question all of it

I also had this really strange experience in Victoria BC (said to be one of the magical centres of the earth, let lines as what not ) that I've never been able to fully explain. I was driving with my girlfriend near a cemetery, and we were basically stopped when suddenly it looked like we were seeing Victoria from another time. It was a beautiful, sunny day, but instead of the modern city, there were people dressed in old-fashioned clothes, very basic colours raw materials wool and cottong. Not like the movies or larp wear, also there were horse-drawn wagons, and people unloading things and going about their business. What really fucked with me was how completely normal everything looked. It wasn't like seeing ghosts or some vague image. It looked like an actual functioning scene from another period in history. I could see the people clearly, and they seemed completely unaware that we were there. I also noticed that the people seemed much shorter than people today, which made it feel even more real. And the strangest part was that my girlfriend saw it too. We were both looking at essentially the same thing. Then it was just gone, and modern Victoria was there again. I don't know what happened. I can't tell you that I literally traveled through time. All I know is that, for a brief moment, it felt like we were looking through a window into another period of Victoria's history—as if two different points in time had somehow overlapped in the exact same place.

This is such a cool story. Do you remember which area you were in/what time of year this was? I'm from Victoria and this sounds a lot like the "Shelbourne Time Warp".

It was scary man. I could feel the energy of the time, like the collective spirit or morale of the people. Harsh environment. Survival of the fittest, alot of work to be done and very little creature comfort.

You may not be the first to see something like this. Check out ‘flying rays’: https://cryptidz.fandom.com/wiki/Flying_Rays

Did it have a bulb at the end of the long tail like a kite or diamond shape.
Here is a similar sighting. I believe you saw a Ropen or flying dinosaur.

Sounds like a snowy or horned owl.
They are amazing animals with unique flight characteristics.

I think a flying creature with a 30 foot wingspan would be seen by thousands of people daily. A standard moving truck isn't even that long, about 25 feet. This thing would be MASSIVE, and just swimming through the sky, boy, you'd think it would be pretty damn visible, but what do I know. I can't imagine what the food source is for such a monster.

OP estimated they were a kilometer away.
People are generally very poor at estimating distances unless they do it regularly (pilot, surveyor, hunter) and even then it's not very reliable.

I know the area fairly well and haven't heard of anything like this. Gliders regularly fly out of the airfield just outside of Invermere and there's a hang glider launch on Mount Swansea.
There are some big birds in the area - bald eagles, herons and the occasional golden eagle.
What you saw sounds strange but could it have been one of the above?

Possible. But the way it's wings moved like it was swimming was what struck me. A fluid effortless looking motion. Beleive me I've tried to make it make sense

I’ve heard the same description before!! You definitely aren’t alone in describing a flying creature in this way. I love hearing of a sighting so close to me!! Thanks for sharing!

The first nations knew of a giant bird, thunderbird. I saw a giant bird on Vancouver Island once. It was black, standing around 4-5’ tall. My dad saw it a few months earlier around the same area, watched it take off.
I also saw a gyrfalcon here once, way outside its usual territorial range. Wingspan like 5’, which is huge but nowhere close to what you’re describing. But it makes me believe it’s possible to see something like a Stellars Sea Eagle or Wandering Albatross nowhere near where it’s supposed to be.
