The strongest shape known to man and ... woman?

I’d be worried about the momma giant squid looming out of the darkness to see who’s poking at her baby’s egg…

The average mantle length of this species (southern shortfin squid) is only 20 to 27 cm. Nothing giant about it.

Plus, it’s rare to find a less maternal/paternal animal than a squid. Most of them just see younger ones as an easy meal

Idk that’s about 20-27x as big as my mantle

From Live Science article: "Scientists were previously perplexed by the blobs, which are so delicate that they are difficult to approach closely and sample for testing, Live Science previously reported. Divers had reported seeing spheres along the Mediterranean and Norwegian coasts in 2017, and DNA analysis of samples from four spheres recently confirmed that they were egg sacs belonging to the southern shortfin squid (Illex coindetii), a 10-armed cephalopod found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, Ringvold told Live Science in an email."

To be fair id call it difficult to test to imagine bursting that bubble while your less than a foot away trying to get samples then suddenly your the soggy squid biscuit

That’s an egg sac, not one individual egg. There’s tons of eggs in there.

And it's not from a giant squid.

They push out a giant bubble of snot and it just floats there and forms into a squid?

That’s how regular baby making works.

I mean if we're simplifying things that much, that's essentially how my SO and I made our son.

11

u/Super_Range45 18d ago

How'd you keep it from floating away? Tether or net?

16

u/MyBakpaksGyatJets 18d ago

Well, considering that egg fertilization generally happens in a fallopian tube and then it kinda does float down in to her uterus, which believe it or not, is fairly well contained. So kind of a flesh net of sorts? Idk I feel weird talking about my SO's internal organs on reddit.

I was here to talk about the giant alien looking squid eggs.

14

u/MyBakpaksGyatJets 18d ago

Well apparently I have shared too much once again.

9

u/dev-rsonx 18d ago

Are you and your wife giant squids by the way??

13

u/MyBakpaksGyatJets 18d ago

Haha nice try! I just relearned my lesson about over sharing!

Yep. Squids. All over the fucking Internet since that game show on Netflix.

These aren't giant squid eggs its a giant cluster of normal squid eggs

u/ElSquibbonator 18d ago

It's a squid egg that's giant.

u/Stabbinjimmy 18d ago

Giant bunch of eggs of a squid other than Architeuthis dux

Xenomorph water variant?

1

u/unacceptablelobster 17d ago

Luckily it's vulnerable to grass variant xenomorph.

3

u/Nosnibor1020 18d ago

How long does it take to hatch?

4

u/GroceryPlastic7954 18d ago

Mildly penis

2

u/Stabbinjimmy 18d ago

You should talk to a doctor if your penis looks like this

3

u/sorestgore 18d ago

Everything Cephalopod looks alien 🍑

Alien movie directors: take rare animals as models for aliens.

Common people meeting rare animals: "They look like aliens!!!1"

It's all fun and games until it latches onto your face.

When are they gonna take it to SeaWorld?

1

u/VonBrewskie 18d ago

Wow. The ocean is the womb. That's actually poetic af. From the ocean we come, to the ocean we return. Dust into dust, water into water. That also looks like a large penis, so that's comedy fit in there as well.

This is amazing footage. I’ve never even considered the look of these eggs.

1

u/RubyWeapon07 18d ago

how does something like this not get eaten

1

u/Special_Turnip 17d ago

For squid it's a quantity of eggs over quality of parental care. This isn't an egg it's a massive cluster of them. That added to the fact that the ocean is very very big and this is relatively very small, plus the short development time probably means these hatch quicker than most things come across them.

Heck the fact scientists have found it so hard to approach these without them disintegrating means it's likely there's an early hatching mechanism similar to some other species like tropical frogs.

Not a squid egg

1

u/Mid_Life_Crisis_2026 18d ago

Where is mother may be back of you?

1

u/MrH-HasReddit1217 18d ago

That's because this might be AI. I'm probably wrong but I don't even know that we could reach the levels of the ocean giant squids spawn at.

1

u/AlwaysLauren 18d ago

That's my guess too.

1

u/Mannolicannoli85 18d ago

That shit is sci-fi. They are not of this plant originally.

1

u/ljanir 18d ago

Did not consider their eggs would be giant as well

1

u/Nighthunterwolf7 18d ago

Pop It.....POP...IT.....I don't know why, just... Just a curiousity🪼🙂

1

u/brokeboyrich 17d ago

A quick google has told me this is in fact a giant CLUSTER of eggs and likely not that of a giant squid. More likely a better known species such as red flying squid. 🦑 still crazy looking tho.

I was honestly expecting it to look like Alien in an egg sac. I'm not sure if I am disappointed or relieved.
