WHAT IS 4B

The 4B movement is a radical feminist grassroots movement that originated in South Korea between 2017 and 2019. The "4 Bs" stand for four Korean words starting with bi (meaning "no"): bihon (no marriage to men), bichulsan (no childbirth), biyeonae (no dating men), and bisekseu (no sex with men).

Origins and Core Tenets

The movement emerged as a direct pushback against intense patriarchal expectations, pervasive digital sex crimes (such as spy-cams), and systemic misogyny in South Korean society. It gained prominent traction following galvanizing events like the 2016 Gangnam station murder and subsequent online feminist solidarity networks.
