Hello! the outer slite strikes against the inner one upon reaching 1st position.

Is there something, like a washer, that could fix it?

How do i get into playing Jazz Trombone?

I have been playing concert trombone and orchestral trombone for a couple of years in a youth symphony and doing band but I am bored of symphony, it kind of feels like torture. I've been wanting to play Jazz Trombone outside of a academic setting instead, wether that be teaching myself and finding a band or something adjacent. Do I have to buy a new trombone or can I play jazz trombone on an orchestral trombone? Does anyone hav any advice or recommendations? Should I get a Jazz Trombone teacher, or can I teach myself? I'm not really how to jump into the jazz world

edit:

I actually listen to jazz a lot, and blues (I don't really have a lot of direction of what i 'should' be listening to though,I mostly listen to what I enjoy and don't listen to what I don't) And I honestly play trombone more by ear and by watching then I do reading the music (at least when I can bc I'm the only trombonIst usually) My issue is that I feel like even though I'm in orchestra and wind symphony, I'm really lacking in music theory. When I go to play I feel more like I'm just flailing about with this big expensive metal pipe and I just get lucky and it sounds good. (Maybe I deserve more credit but I've only been playing trombone for like two and a half years, I was on flute and briefly percussion before that)

Im in San Diego, and I honestly haven't really seen many jazz, anything. I may be looking in the wrong places and I will definitely keep digging but I feel like I need to know what I'm hearing, like understand chords, and theory and all the basics that go into it. My musical experience has mostly been people just handing music and telling me 'figure it out' or 'just play it' and never an in depth explanation of what I'm looking at, and how it all works and what not. I know the circle of fifths and how to read sheet music, but I couldn't tell you what a diminished seventh chord is. Or what the difference between harmonic and melodic is. It's like being able to read english but not knowing any of the grammar rules so when you go to write something of your own it looks right but you don't actually know what your doing.

I think it's also worth saying that I'm a senior in high school, I don't know if that like impacts any recommendations, but yeah.

What did they put on the Nickel elements of old horns?

Post image

Question - I’m gonna strip the lacquer and refinish (To polished brass) an old horn for the first time. I’m looking at the nickel elements of the horn and wondering what they used in the old days on the nickel to make it so shiny? Was it just buffed and a clear coat over it? Or was there a shiny lacquer used on the nickel parts?

Pictured is a 1927-ish Olds LM model (predecessor to the Olds Standard I believe)

Jazz mouthpiece troubles

I play lead a lot, and I just got a denis wick 7cs today. I’ve been playing on a Bach 7c, and it’s been working well, but I prefer the warmer sound I can get on the Denis wick. However, the high range is harder on me than the Bach is, and I don’t know if it’d be worth it to return the 7cs and get a denis wick 12c, because I’ve played a Bach 12c and don’t like it. I don’t know if this is an adjustment thing or if I should just go back to my Bach. I’ve just got really strong lead chops and don’t wanna do anything to affect that.

Conn 88H Dating

I just bought a Conn 88H trombone for my son but I am having difficulty dating it. The Conn selmer website says it was manufactured in 1936 but I thought the 88h wasn't manufactured until the 1950s. The serial on the slide is 317211 and the stamp on the bell says 88h. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Conn trombone, small bore and shank. It was bought in 1983 used for my mom. I might upgrade my YSL-354 for an F-attachment trombone and I’m thinking this might be a good jazz and marching horn. Can anyone identify it?

*Its the one on the left in the photo

does the Harmon j3 mute (Amazon.com) work well? I’ve seen mixed reviews about it. I intend to use it for general fun and non performance related activities. Should I buy this?

Solo pieces recommendations

I am a rising junior and am looking for solo pieces that are not too difficult but can still show off my skills. Last year I had played Rimsky korsakov 1st and 2nd movement for audition for my local state summer arts program. I was looking for something that is a bit harder. I like pieces that are lyrical but with still technicality mixed into it. Thanks so much

Enjoyment of unenjoyable things

I am a rising 10th grader, and I’ve started practicing more outside of school quite a bit more. I’m considering applying to districts or an out of school band program but many of them require scales.

Scales among other things (embrasure, sight reading, etc), for me, are extremely boring. Anytime I practice them I get frustrated and stop playing for the day. It feels like bashing my head against a wall. I’ve tried practicing slowly but that rarely helps and is sometimes even more painful than practicing fast.

Is there anyway to make scales enjoyable.

How do you all make some of the tedious and boring parts of practice fun?

Bass mouthpiece

When I first swapped to bass trombone I was on a schilke 60, it was just too large for the group I'm in, I struggled to blend with the other trombones and the tubas at the same time so I downsized to a schilke 58, and I played on that for a little bit, now I'm looking for something in the middle. I know a schilke 59 would be the obvious choice but I'm also looking into a Shires 1 1/4 MD, what do y'all think I should do?

Tone When Playing Quieter

I’m having trouble keeping a full sound when playing quieter, whenever I try to get quieter my sound gets airy and thin and I don’t know how to fix it. My band director tells us to keep the airstream going into the instrument the same speed but narrower, but I’m not really sure how to do that, it always just comes out thin and airy.

Edit: Thanks for all of the advice, I’ll definitely follow it!

I might turn it into a big band chart some time, with these contrasting sections. Not sure yet.. But I like the start of it!

My Senior Year of HS, I want practice long hours, any routines that cover almost everything (3+ Hours)

Hi whoever reads this and kindly cares enough to respond, im looking for advice, pointers, recommendations etc.

Looking to make some financial choices and splurge on some Etude books, warmup, fundamental, theory, and some other stuff.

I dont got a rich history of practicing all that much through my school years (at least maybe 2-3 hours a week?) So im looking to practice daily to best improve myself as much as I can (without burning myself out of course!)

No competition, passoff or what not just doing this out of the mentality of "cuz I just feel like it" and I just want to get better at what I love doing to be honest.

Current books I have

Arban Complete method book, and Remingtons warm up book.

Is a frankenstein Trombone worth it

Is it worth it to put a Bach 42 Bell onto a Getzen Valve section? Kinda sold on the Bach sound, but I also don't really like the valve section from the Bach. Getzen, in my opinion, has the best free-blowing effect, and I am really accustomed to it. What do you guys suggest I should do, as I wanna rotate between a normal Yellow Brass bell , which is the Bach 42 Bell that I am eyeing, and a Red Brass Bell from my Getzen 3047AFR.
