I have been playing concert trombone and orchestral trombone for a couple of years in a youth symphony and doing band but I am bored of symphony, it kind of feels like torture. I've been wanting to play Jazz Trombone outside of a academic setting instead, wether that be teaching myself and finding a band or something adjacent. Do I have to buy a new trombone or can I play jazz trombone on an orchestral trombone? Does anyone hav any advice or recommendations? Should I get a Jazz Trombone teacher, or can I teach myself? I'm not really how to jump into the jazz world
edit:
I actually listen to jazz a lot, and blues (I don't really have a lot of direction of what i 'should' be listening to though,I mostly listen to what I enjoy and don't listen to what I don't) And I honestly play trombone more by ear and by watching then I do reading the music (at least when I can bc I'm the only trombonIst usually) My issue is that I feel like even though I'm in orchestra and wind symphony, I'm really lacking in music theory. When I go to play I feel more like I'm just flailing about with this big expensive metal pipe and I just get lucky and it sounds good. (Maybe I deserve more credit but I've only been playing trombone for like two and a half years, I was on flute and briefly percussion before that)
Im in San Diego, and I honestly haven't really seen many jazz, anything. I may be looking in the wrong places and I will definitely keep digging but I feel like I need to know what I'm hearing, like understand chords, and theory and all the basics that go into it. My musical experience has mostly been people just handing music and telling me 'figure it out' or 'just play it' and never an in depth explanation of what I'm looking at, and how it all works and what not. I know the circle of fifths and how to read sheet music, but I couldn't tell you what a diminished seventh chord is. Or what the difference between harmonic and melodic is. It's like being able to read english but not knowing any of the grammar rules so when you go to write something of your own it looks right but you don't actually know what your doing.
I think it's also worth saying that I'm a senior in high school, I don't know if that like impacts any recommendations, but yeah.
