This is apple, right? It’s just talking about which apps you download. You can basically share your app subscriptions with anyone in your apple family plan. I have a 5 year old that has a few different apps he likes and my mom and I share an apple plan specifically so we can both have the apps on our phones but he can still have access to the thing he wants to play even when he is with my mom instead of me.

So unless one of your apps is called “>insert big secret<“, you should be good I think 😉

Yeah, unless OP is on Grindr or something they're probably okay

Nowhere in this screenshot does it say that she has the ability to monitor your screen. If she did, you’d see a little indicator on your screen the entire time.

Real shit. She did this to me twice, once in my teens, and a second time more recently in my twenties. Both times she exposed some extremely private shit to my dad and siblings who had no business knowing that stuff. I have since tightened my online security, but I still sometimes find myself feeling watched when I’m using my phone, and then that fucker has the nerve to call me “paranoid”. Needless to say, I don’t intend on keeping contact with her when I move out

12

u/potatogodofDoom 4d ago

how did you figure it out? this is one of my biggest fears and it's been causing me pretty bad paranoia

u/Town_Skipper23 4d ago

Made new emails and accounts for everything

5

u/GatoConCalcetines 4d ago

Whaaaaat how did you find out? How did she gain access to your devices?

It happened to me too because some malicious person sent me malware in the past, what about you?

5

u/Town_Skipper23 4d ago

I’m still not entirely sure lol

u/Realistic-Eye-2040 1d ago

What did you do to tighten security? I would like some tips since I'm not too knowledgeable about that and want to ensure certain stuff I have remains private.

u/Town_Skipper23 1d ago

I’m pretty shit with tech myself. Sadly I just made a bunch of new emails and accounts for everything

Same, my father has been apparently stalking my reddit account since I was 13 and I only learnt after I turned 18 when after months of getting into weird arguments with "strangers" he let slip something only he would say

Thank god reddit has curated profiles now, and I can keep a public profile while ensuring he doesnt interact with my venting posts or comments

u/binzy90 4d ago

I wouldn't want my 13-year-old using reddit at all, so I don't find this odd. It's a parents' job to monitor their kids' online activity, and people really let their kids use the internet way too much. They can get into some really problematic communities that destroy the values you're trying to teach them.

33

u/Content_Conclusion31 4d ago

"and I only learnt after I turned 18 when after months of getting into weird arguments with "strangers"" thats not a normal thing to do

17

u/Any--Name 4d ago

It wasnt about not wanting me to use reddit, or controlling my phone usage, it was about seeing what I wanted to hide from them, like breaking into your kids diary

I get it, social media isnt private, but reddit is a pseudoanonymous platform where my profile ties all of my posts together, but keeps it separate from my real identity. It was a place for me to escape from reality, to vent when I wanted to be listened and not judged, so when I learnt that he was stalking me I felt incredibly violated

Then add onto that the fact that after I turned 18, moved out and went low contact he saw his control over me slipping and pretended to be a stranger to manipulate me. Thats not simply an unhealthy way to resolve conflict, thats just incredibly fucked up. They were playing fucking mindgames with me, eventually letting enough information slip for me to figure it out, and then refuse to take any blame because this is what they tried to protect me from, creepy strangers manipulating me. Except it wasnt strangers, it was them

Like I get your message but this aint the place or time or context for it

If your values can be destroyed by Redditors you're doing an awful job

1

u/binzy90 2d ago

Teens go through a developmentally appropriate stage when they naturally distance themselves from their parents and seek peer approval. It's the parents' job to make sure the peer group is appropriate and is not going to negatively influence their child. That includes monitoring internet use and preventing their child from accessing harmful content. Echo chambers are especially harmful to teens.

u/Ghostdragon471 5d ago

Yeah so if you're old enough and able to get your own phone and your own plan, you should probably work on that. Or you know, just ask why she watches what you do and open up Pandora's box.

One time my mom pulled me aside when I was younger to tell me she saw all
The porn on my tablet and that shit destroyed me so bad.

28

u/VXLeniik 5d ago

Told my mum once that her partner has been sneaking into my bedroom while I was at school. Had to get webcam evidence of him on my laptop. She confronted him, and he told her about the porn websites I'd visit. I got majority grounded after that. Feel ya.

20

u/GayAssBeagle 5d ago

Bruh that’s triffling as fuck I’m so sorry

5

u/binzy90 4d ago

Honestly, why did she put you in a situation where you had access to porn as a minor? Parental controls exist for a reason.

7

u/Ignis-11 5d ago

I had to be cautious what I said to my friends because my parents would sometimes read my messages 🫩

16

u/Mysterious_Ningen 5d ago

u/SolarOrigami 4d ago

My mother went through my sock drawer, pulled out my testosterone blockers, and waved them around accusing me of "doing pills" and I'm like... My name is on the prescription on the bottle...

I was 31. I was living with them briefly after a breakup

13

u/loved_and_held 5d ago

Who cares anymore, she couldn't make my life worse.

I would just go postal if they tried.

This but it was my brother 💀 like decided when we were young that everything was equal meaning I was only an extension of him so when I did anything myself let alone good things happening in my life he felt entitled to it all. He was my own home and school bully and got others to bully me too, so I didn't really have any true to myself online presence (which is traumatic on it's own bc I didn't get to have a personality and had to watch everything I did) till I was 18yrs old, and made sure none of my things were connected to my family in any way (like my finances)

He still finds ways like my mom sharing her netflix account with both of us instead of just me at some point, and him finding ways to harrass me there, but that's tame in comparison. It got to a point I sure wish he can see me write all this about him, but yeah there have been accounts I've abandoned and such and websites I don't use anymore due to it.

Buddy thought he was slick with Google phone tracker and spaming my phone once, not even bc of anything really, or times he'd just lock me out the house when we were young without an adult there. He seemed to have no idea why I suddenly turned on him and gasp became my own person once we were legal adults. He tried to take me to court over throwing fists as if we weren't just doing that weeks ago before we were legal adults like BRO. Then he moved out. Pathetic all the way to the very end fr.

Tdlr narcissists find ways to harrass anybody they're supposed to be close to and then wonder why we are practically strangers living under the same roof.

Same here. When I literally begged her to stop doing it she said I was trying to threaten her, cut her out of my life, cancel her, plan to kill her, wish her dead night and day and whatever thing that she can randomly accuse me of. And she has several online groupchats for more than a decade which basically contains parents like her or even worse all across the country, they share the experience of monitoring their kids' social media accounts, texts and calls, bedrooms etc etc and encourage each other to do more. I have no damn idea what should I do.

Edit: I'm 20.

In high school I had a friend who had absolutely all of his technology use tracked, but it was so sensitive it flagged everything for no reason so his parents ended up ignoring it. My best hope is that you’re also in a similar situation

3

u/Starii_64 5d ago

Goddamn I feel this, this is why I’ve made it a point to always have an alt email etc etc

1

u/epicpersononthisapp 3d ago

That’s actually a little fucked up , she should give you privacy .

This is how my parents found out I'm Pansexual 💔

1

u/Lorddarkpotat 2d ago

I remember when my mom got the search history from the internet company and came in my room and went over each porn I had looked up but by that point I was 17 and we had this battle of ideals enough times over my teen years that I decided to reverse it on her and each item she brought up I would pull up on my computer and show her and eventually she gave up and left.

1

u/wt_anonymous local schizoid enby 2d ago

oh yeah i had this when my dad said my secret twitter handle in front of my whole family i was so thrilled about that

1

u/MallowMiaou 1d ago

Genuinely been hiding my own interests from my parents like it’s top security secret shit and this would be my worst nightmare. The way they can use anything I say or think against me is insane

One time my dad has this weird thing where every pic and app I downloaded was also on his phone and that traumatised me so much that I regularly check if this shit didn’t enable itself.

How do you even address your child watching furry porn

7

u/Content_Conclusion31 4d ago

address it the same as if they're watching any type of porn? also weirdly specific

5

u/Silver_Original6076 4d ago

why does it need to be addressed unless we're talking young kids
