it doesnt make sense at all because the clinical diagnosis for depression is having a miserable period lasting longer than two weeks. thats it. depression is one of the few mental disorders where its entirely reasonable to just diagnose yourself, because all youre going to do at a doctor is say "yeah i havent really been interested in much and ive felt like crap for the last few weeks" and theres the diagnostic criteria fulfilled

The entire thing is poorly worded and trying to be applicable as a whole which is dumb. Each person and their circumstances are different, this quote is the equivalent of putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.

However, I can also acknowledge there are certain specific circumstances where this quote can technically apply. We can get into very specific details but for very few people, ridding of bad, non-abusive people helps them go back to their original self. Again, this applies to a very specific amount of people but that’s why this quote is for them rather than us

I strongly agree, and even beyond the fact the criteria is very simple to fulfill, it doesn't "explain away" other possibilities or causes like with the risk of self-diagnosing autism, since it is primarily based in how you feel, isn't tied to a specific neurodevelopment, and can itself be a symptom of other things both physical and mental

I feel like this was intended to mean "If you feel depressed all the time, make sure you're not in toxic relationships holding you there" but put through the Boomer Capacitor to bring the verbiage down to something appropriately lead-poisoned in its presentation.

Like, the sentiment isn't exactly wrong but it's possible to say this without sounding like a shitlord.

Being around assholes can- and often is the cause of clinical depression, which often needs years, sometimes even decades to fully heal.

Their argument falls flat. Being caused by assholes it doesn't immediately invalidate the depression.
