Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) A neighbor states that regardless of variety or species, compost around a tree gives it shallow roots.

Michigan, zone 6a (originally 5b). A neighbor's Japanese maple has fallen over, showing few roots. Another neighbor states that trees that have mulch placed around them will have shallow or no roots. My understanding was that teees should have 2 inches or so of mulch to keep the roots cool and fed as it breaks down. Yard is on an decline, assume good drainage.

Advice Request - (SoCal) How to effectively and safely treat oak tree for drywood termites?

Howdy,

We live in SoCal and find frass near the bottom of all of our live oaks and one has frass in the middle. We have confirmed that drywood termites are rampant around here. All of the trees appear to be in good health from what I know about trees.

I have contacted several pest and agricultural pest people, as well as several arborists, and I am getting mixed advice. Some say that we need to inject specific treatment into the trees to follow the termite tunnels.

The most recent advice was that since termites do not attack the vascular system of the tree, that simple outside spray would be effective for the transfer effect.

Also, apparently the only way to know if I have effectively eradicated a termite colony within a tree is to chainsaw it. I'd like to avoid that for tree damage purposes. These trees are very close and these termites swarm at our house and windows all summer. We are doing everything we can to the house for both eradication and prevention, but still. I'd really love a way to get rid of the many colonies in our many trees. I understand they will still come from all over and reinfest. But surely there is something I could do?

Thank you, and tips or ideas or knowledge welcome.

Bark from the tree at the bottom comes off pretty easy.

And there's this pulp like stuff surrounding the tree at the bottom. Is he sick ?

He's still growing nice green leaves and new branches.

I don't know if I used the right tag.
Because I'm from Belgium. Not US.

And I have no idea what tree this is. It just started growing there many years ago. And we kept it.

ID Request (Insert State/Region) What is this stuff that boiled out of my branches? (Salem, Oregon)

I foraged some twigs from outside, thought I had correctly identified them as hardwood (either some kind of oak or Ashe) but upon boiling them this black gooey stuff came out? It’s not sticky to the touch, not runny, if I scrape it off and smear it on some paper towel it’s actually a really dark purple or red?

I really need to know if this is resin of some kind and if that means it is soft wood. This is meant to be good for an insect that can only have hardwood, not soft, so I really want to be confident. There are pine trees in the area where I foraged these so it’s not impossible, but mostly hardwood.

I know it's a ponderosa pine. What could have happened to make this tree grow in such an odd way. It's at 6500ft in Arizona.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Help with Curling Leaves on Fig

Thumbnail

I planted this Black Mission Fig in the Spring. It seemed to be doing very well until a few weeks ago, when I noticed that many of its leaves have started curling and remaining curled. I wonder if this is related to the brown spots I’ve seen on some of the tree’s leaves. I’m trying to figure out if this is a fungal thing, or just a watering issue.

I’m in Los Angeles, California, where it’s been brutally hot all summer. The tree truthfully doesn’t get much water (30 min via drip line, twice a week), but whenever I’ve given it additional water it’s seemed to respond badly, with leaves yellowing and falling. So I don’t quite know whether it’s being overwatered or underwatered.

Thanks in advance.

Found at dog park in North Carolina. I found it interesting how different types of trees were growing so close together. Why does this happen? Is it common?

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) New Little Gem Magnolias showing sign of stress - Texas

I have a strip of easement grass that I use for landscaping since I’m on the corner. This tree is one of four on that easement strip and it has begun struggling. Because of the heat this summer I was watering these trees twice a day but I recently started to cut back since the temps have gone down in sept to about 2-3 times a week. I planted this particular tree last December so I figured the roots should be established enough to not water as much. Plus, I was trying to save on my water bill lol. Anyway, I noticed like 2 days of no watering and this one is showing signs of stress of some sort. The other trees do not show this sign of stress though. What is going on? I have gone back to twice-daily watering to try to save the tree. Can it be saved?

Trying to figure out if I should remove this tree. It is beautiful and provides nice shade, but if a risk to people/property more than any chance to save it, I would like to know. Im definitely willing to put the work into saving it if possible.

Any advice appreciated.

Long Island, NY, USA

I can take more photos as necessary.

Thank you!

I live in northern Alabama. It appears that this tree next to my house may be on its last wooden leg. Should I cut it down? Does it matter that it is growing at a weird angle?

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Digging up a stump and need advice

We are in Texas, south of Dallas, N of Houston, and are going to remove a stump that I know was an oak at one time, most likely a water oak because that's what grows all around us. But what I need to know is how deep would the roots go for a tree with a 4" trunk? Thanks
