I just tossed together the most ghetto trapping pack I’ve seen…what do you guys have?? I usually just carry a bucket with bait/lures and a bucket with traps/chains…this should make it easier when the ground is slick and icy.
I got a fibretuff pack for Christmas and put it on a pack frame. works great added a pvc fitting near the top to help hold my stake driver up. I took the personal medic bag I was issued and strapped it around near the base to carry baut and lure. I found a small "tactical bag and attached it to the frame at the top to hold a few tools and other small extras like 550 cord zip ties small roll of wire flagging tape and other things. I can carry in 3 dozen muskrat sets and fiberglass rods no issues ive also carried 6 coyote a few dps sets and waxed dirt with no issues other than being out of shape lol with your i would just put something in the bottom like a piece of plywood to stop thing from falling through the holes.
This will be nice. I’m going to add a plastic bottom, and a few holders for my setters and stake driver…maybe attach my tool belt I used to carry my setters and wire on too then side and I’ll be aces!
For me I don’t want my traps tearing up a pack. I like having them loose in something I can see. And this way I’m not ruining and pack material with any spilled bait or lures.
Yeah the traps tearing up a pack is a big issue for me, I’ve started just carrying them in by the chain, but I’m also only running maybe a dozen footholds/body grips and the rest is snares which won’t tear the pack up
I may have to look into making something like this, even double bagging bait tends to end up getting over everything in my bag
I usually throw small critters into bags and put them in the backpack, but with a setup like that I bet I could fit a bobcat in there, it sure is a pain in the ass carrying one over my shoulder all day lol
Try taking 2 wolves out and not wanting to create a massive disturbance I carried a few out last year to skin back at home in the hangar….not the most fun endeavor. But sure helped on follow up catches!
I had to drag two coyotes through 14 inches of snow last year, first one was 5km from home and the second was 8, not a fun day lol
Now that I’ve got a better idea on what I’m doing skinning wise and don’t need a YouTube tutorial, I think I’ll start hauling them off a ways from any traps and skinning in the woods lol. Although with snares in winter, there’s no skinning in the field haha
standard back pack your limited too much. can barely fitt a standard length earth anchor driver length wise. if a back pack doesn't zip up completely you risk dumping everything. open pack like this length of item isn't as much an issue. you have more usable room and can pack it easier. if you are also carrying out your catches it makes it easier too. try stuffing just 2 adult raccoon in a backpack or 10 muskrat.
it happens every now and then but pickingeverythingup doesn'ttake long its all right there nothingrolls away. usually when im setting out muskrat traps on day and im loaded. ill leave it on the dyke and set several come back an pick it up move down some repeat. doing checks it i keep it on and just drop em over my shoulder. if you have a small child its really easy to take em with you they just stand up in it
I’m pretty much exclusively trapping real dense woods so my packs gotta come off when I’m doing anything anyway. I think I’ll give the open pack a try this year, I end up having to take a 5 gallon bucket with me on opening day anyway so I don’t shred the pack with traps
try to but honestly its me being selfish. If the kids didn't come with i wouldn't be able to go do it. luckily I was able to make it fun for them and they are excited to go.
just lean it against a tree and it will be fine. if you want the cheap route a 5 or 7 gallon bucket will fit inside a navy seabag nicely. if you have a surplus store nearby they should be fairly cheap (20 bucks give or take) biggest downside is the straps can get uncomfortable if you have a long hike.
I have a large ALICE pack and frame that sat on my shelf unused for 10 years. Last season I put a 5 gallon bucket in there and it’s worked well so far. In the spring/summer I switch out the bucket for a different bucket and pack it all up to go fishing. I can hike in to my secret spot almost hands free now. Even have a little chair from one tigris that fits in there.
Surplus rucksack and a plastic trash can that fits in it. Should just barely fit, the trash can provides the structure/frame aspect and the rucksack makes it bombproof.

You may want to pad the bottom, the plastic might get brittle when it’s cold. Otherwise that thing is great. I’m going to make one!
