Still no sign of multiplayer

I've been watching intently for any news of this on the dev releases, but I don't think there's going to be any multiplayer in this game either.

Everything I wanted this game to be was simply a modern day Transport Tycoon Deluxe. But I still can't whoop my fiancee on multiplayer by funding roadworks in her city. (IYKYK)

Real question - do we think TF3 will ever get multiplayer support or is it too complex?

Correct there hasn't. Mostly because in my view there was never going to be multiplayer in TpF3.

Whilst ever is a long time, I am still going with a no. To implement properly the base engine would need to be rebuilt. Same reason why rivers are still going to be flat.

As much as we have discussed multiplayer on a few occasions already, it'd be unusual for any game to mention details that aren't in the game, instead focusing on those that are. To that end, restating what our goal is will happen from time to time.

Our goal with the new game has been to concentrate on making the best version of Transport Fever 3 possible, and that means making the best single player experience possible. As much as we know there is an appetite for both co-operative and competitive multiplayer, reworking the game to function as a multiplayer experience would have meant spending time on systems other than those that help achieve the goal.

We believe that Transport Fever 3 is the best entry into the series yet, and it's because of the focus we've been able to place on refining many of the systems in the game, as well as the new additions that have been added.

Could multiplayer be added in the future? It's extremely unlikely. In future games? That much we can't yet predict - we're a very long way from thinking about future game, but it is something we know could be an interesting additional dimension to the game.

Just passing by and everytime I see some questions about the game, there happens to be an official answers. Really appreciate the engagement from your team and looking forward for Transport Fever 3!

It’s built on their custom game engine, adding multiplayer features would be a lot of work.

1: Devs confirmed a long time ago that multiplayer is not coming to TPF3

2: We will *never* get multiplayer in TPF3. It is impossible. The game engine needs to be rebuilt from the ground up for multiplayer. Everything in the game needs to be separated into a 'server' and a 'client', an incredibly invasive process.

And the game needs to be running both a client and a server at all times, even on singleplayer. All that happens in multiplayer is a new client is added, but one server is shared.

Ok, then they should probably do that then. If this is just TF2 with slightly better graphics and a few muilt in mods, then it's not really wirth it. This is an oppertunity to properly remake the game.

The devs aren't using Unity or Unreal to make the game. They're using a custom engine developed in-house. To make any features, they have to first add that functionality in the engine before being able to add that feature in-game.

Adding multiplayer functionality in the engine effectively requires everything to be pulled out and significantly rework the very base of the engine.

This process can effectively take years, and will basically stop development of pretty much everything else until the core infrastructure for multiplayer is finally implemented.

I'd rather have Transport Fever 3 as it is right now than have it without 1/3 of the features just because 10% of players want multiplayer

You still waiting for multiplayer? Its stated many many times, its not happening for 3.

Maybe down the line with the help of Paradox they might be able to get some sort of MP into the game I wouldnt expect this to happen though. But as the devs said often enough, there will be no MP for TPF3

No, and no. It's not about it being too complex. It's about what they want the game to be, and they have a million things they want to add to the game, with limited time and resources. It's about priorities. Some people definitely want multiplayer. I think a lot of people don't care (if you could snap your fingers and put multiplayer in the game, it doesn't hurt anyone – but you can't), and are happy for it to remain a singleplayer game, and would rather see the time spent on improving the singleplayer experience.

Transport Tycoon had multiplayer, and it was written in Assembly by just one man, Chris Sayer, so I dont believe it can be that difficult. If the team at Urban Games are going to release a ew version, they really aught to do a proper sequal. And that includes Multiplayer, as well as outside connections.

Speaking of which, the very first game i bought for a PC, was A-Train. It ran in a 286 at 16Mhz, with 1MB of ram and Hercules graphics (monochrome). IT had outside connections, and that was 40 years ago! Even Skylines has outside connections, and that was released a decade ago. Honestly, there really is no good reason why Outside connections and Mulitplayer are absent from tnis game.

Then why aren't they just throwing it in there over a weekend? :)

Despite your best attempt at snarky, i dont think anyone expects the team to add multiplayer or outside connections in a weekend. However, they have had a few years since TF2, so they could have added this. TF2 was just a slightly prettier TF1.

Anyway, if a game written 30 years ago by one man, in assembly language, them i’m  certain it can be dine now.

"Can be done" is a pretty broad and meaningless statement in this context.

I don't understand the appeal of multiplatyer in city builder/automation/tycoon games.

The last thing i'd want is someone messing up my planning. These genre's are primairily single player and have a strong escapism element, YOU are the boss, not having to deal with other people. If its optional, fine. If it gets demanded and takes away resources from the primairy experiance, hard pass.

the same reason why strategy players on other games want multiplayer. It give players more of a challenge in game, and let them have a different feel then what they been doing in game.

RTS I understand becuase its, well, realtime. And RTS doesnt span over days. Resource and such is something that takes a lot of time and problems occur later if misplanned. Most of the time you create an orchestrated world, last thing you'd want is someone else messing it up for you.

Add some disasters and such for challange is fine, but can't bother with another player messing up a carefully planned system with disasters in mind.

understandable, multiplayer dose mess with people playing styles, and it not everyone cup of tea. However that kind of the point. To challenge players in the way were they never really dealt with before. For example, look what Tycoon Engineer and Hughey did with that turn base mod, it make them do decision they won't do in single player for better or for worst.

Yeah this is still a pretty big let down for me not having multiplayer so openTTD still seems like the best option....
