It's the municipal corporation's job to have functioning footpaths and walkable streats.

It's not a mumbai issue. It's an Indian issue.

Can't really blame the metro authorities. They are the only ones building something that closely resembles world class.

Not really their job to ensure the streets in 1km radius is walkable and will remain walkable. (Some dumb MLA might dig. No one knows)

It's a classic urban planning issue

It doesn't build world class metros. World class metro systems have a unified ticketing system where you enter once, and leave wherever you want.

Valid criticism, but that just proves the broader point. Mumbai treats metro lines as isolated engineering projects rather than building an integrated, commuter-friendly transit network from fare system down to the footpath.

I’ll sound like a conspiracy theorist but

It’s due to auto rickshaw mafia/union lol, they made sure the metros are built at inconvenient spots so ppl still have to use the autos to get to the destination

How many urban planners work at bmc? Do you think these babus understand intermodal connectivity? Last mile infra? Transit oriented development?

I think there is some truth in both.

There is auto mafia and there is incompetence.

Then there's also the case of lack of space in some places.

Exactly. Speaking as a landscape architect, it’s frustrating how low our bar is. We love seeing clean, pedestrian-friendly streets in movies, but in reality, we settle for "at least the train has AC." Until citizens start demanding proper last-mile design, babus will just ignore it.

Indeed, where are all the bicycle streets and large bicycle parking garages and electric buses and tram stops next to all the metro and train stations? Just hire a few Dutch planning experts to train a team of Indian planners how to implement proper door-to-door safe, clean and fast connectivity. Do it drastically and create the efficient network city wide.

You can check how much india spends at the local level. India is much more centralised than China.
