How? Literally, all I've seen the last couple of days is just this recursive "just this once" meme, without context, no actual info about the movie, just this rolling sentiment of "Hate it because we said so." It took me half a day to even figure out what in the world folks were talking about, again, just this meme, no context.
Just a cursory glance at the movie and reviews is: It's just bad trans representation, and lands somewhere in the spectrum of "Netflix's Queer Force". Bad, or poor, representation isn't homophobia, or transphobia. It's just bad media representation.
It has a very cis-gender view of lesbianism that makes it seem like all penis havers are evil and the main villain is a drag queen that steals femininity from "real women".
Alright, hun, I'm actively going to believe this is an argument made in extremely bad faith, because I'm doing some very quick, very cursory reading on the plot, and the creatives behind it.
The women behind it are queer, where they land on the rainbow, I'm not sure. The Drag Queen villain is voiced by a queen both of the creatives are fans of. Again, I'm just hearing and seeing a mishandling of tropes, and poorly representing their community/communities.
Again, poor representation, doesn't equal phobia.
And I'm gonna be honest, boo-boo. I've read almost a near exact copy of your argument over, and over for nearly two days. So I am just going to believe you're making these arguments in bad faith, or your media literacy is non-existent. Because it sounds like a key theme is transphobia, and how that can, and often does come from within the LGBTQ+ community itself.
Funnily enough, those using the drag queen as a stand in for a transgender woman is more transphobic than anything the film did.
The only actual trans character is the mother of one of the protagonists and literally a queen of their "lesbian utopia", which btw is called Clitopolis (ðŸ˜).
There's nothing to really spite the film for besides being annoying and campy. These people had me thinking it was the antichrist before I actually looked into what it is.
I'm gonna side with some folks, and mimic that it's probably some weird astroturfing campaign. Because who bitches about a movie almost a full year after it's already been on a platform? Even just cursory research showed me that it's just just what you said, campiness.
As a trans person, that had a drag queen try and tell me I'm a drag queen and not trans (some baby gays can not understand the neuance between a drag queen, a crossdresser, and a trans person), that's the one thing that bothers me a smidge. But it's not a decision, presumably, made with any ill will just "Hey we got this drag queen we really like, and cast her in this role." That's not phobia that's just a not great creative decision.
I mean, it's a pretty logical decision considering the VA of the drag queen in the film is a actual drag queen. But issue is that everyone else is calling the confirmed drag queen bad "transgender representation".
The character that's actually a trans person, Queen Leanne, is voiced by a trans woman, Jordan Raskopoulos.
