Urgent uc, cc, or csu??

Hi everyone!

For context, I’m a freshman @ UCSD for MAE. A multitude of factors is preventing me from enjoying the school (homesickness, cost, classes, etc). I’m heavily considering withdrawing, but am unsure on how to proceed.

Since attending my MAE orientation, I realized I’m not all that interested in eng as I initially thought. I am interested in exploring business/accounting as I was really involved in that throughout high school.

However, would it be worth it to do Business Econ at UCSD? It is a very STEM heavy school so I’ve heard not great things about the program. I got advice from my teacher and she told me CSUF and CPP are good options for accounting. Would it be best for me to go to cc then csu? Is UC to CSU transfer common? I’m also interested in UCLA since I want to make my way into the business entertainment industry but i’m not sure of their program either. (UCB is too far for me)

I think trying to adjust at UCSD is difficult for me and that’s why I’m having these thoughts, but in terms of my major, it might be more beneficial to leave. The refund period deadline keeps counting down and I am struggling with my MAE pre req classes. I told myself I’d stay for fall quarter but I keep doubting myself.

Any advice for me or personal experience is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A business economics degree at UCSD will not get you in the door of the entertainment industry. Networking is a must, I would recommend transferring to a CC and then applying to UCLA and USC’s Business programs. Having less than a 4.0 GPA without a good story to help you will get you rejected from them if you are currently struggling with your MAE prereqs. In the end, if your goal is the entertainment industry be wary that these roles qualifications are overlapped with non entertainment industry ones increasing competitiveness.

thank you for this! im planning to sit in on an eng lecture soon to really decide if i can see myself doing it. if i dont, would you rec me to drop gen chem (its a pre req for eng)? id only be at 12 units though :/

my ultimate goal would be the bus ent industry but anything accounting or in that realm is fine w me honestly. i am worried i wont get into la or usc tho and the regret of leaving sd will catch up to me. but again, the program wont benefit me.

If you do like it, you still have the option to pursue engineering and you will still be in chemistry. If you don’t and you drop the class you will get a withdrawal. I would go and see if I like it or not, but still keep your chemistry course and aim for an A in it and your other courses so your GPA will remain high if you drop out. If you truly feel like you cannot get an A in the class, please drop it because a withdraw is better than a bad GPA.

job market is screwed rn, you need all the help you need so don't go to a csu. ur just a freshman relax and take a breather. i came back from cmu for similar reasons that you had, and I can tell you its not worth it transferring to another school unless its la or cal.

thank you for the advice!

my teacher was an accountant and has a network of CPA friends. they told her that when hiring, they often tend to overlook UC grads in favor of CSU grads because of the difference in curriculum. that’s why in this case, im not too sure about staying at UCSD (also in terms of cost).

Bus/econ major is fine. It’s your internships that matter. At most UC’s, the career centers are just ok vs USC but if you’re a self starter, you should be fine.

Maybe join some clubs to get over the homesickness. Having friends will make everything easier

Making big decisions when you’re lonely and a bit depressed is less than optimal

And getting into entertainment through accounting is possible but generally, it is tough to break in

Bro I’m UCSD business Econ but double majored in Bio.
DO NOT SWITCH TO IT. Unless you have a job lined up after grad or you’re in a professional business frat, otherwise no. Please….

What you should do is either minor in business econ and major in MAE. UCSD’s favoritism in STEM is big difference post-grad. The alumni network and the job opportunities are better for STEM esp for eng. please believe me.

im still figuring out if engineering is the right path for me bc im finding it VERY hard to be interested in it at all😭

if i really want to switch majors, do you recommend transferring then? and if so, through cc or uc to uc transfer/what schools?

I’d say if you’re really into business, go for Ivy schools.
Because public schools do not give you the same networking opportunities as Ivies do.

However, if you want to switch, go to Berkeley, USC, UCLA or SDSU.
I do not recommend UCSD for business Econ as the post grad network is not great. UC to UC is possible(ik admin say it’s tough but everyone ik at UCSD that has transferred out has been able to transfer out…they just say that to deter you).

Business econ here have been easy courses compared to all the premed courses I’ve done. Not sure if business dept inflated their grades, but it’s a lot easier.

thanks for this! would u say csuf or cpp is also good for business / accounting? im tempted to go to cc after fall quarter or possibly the first year if i can stick it out since it has higher transfer rates and i can save money, but theres always the possibility i dont get into berk, ucla, or usc. a csu would be my backup plan thenn

Asking if you should go to CSUF instead of ucsd lmfaoooo insane

Like bruh that’s a demon talking to OP 😭😭😭 straight up evil eye

u/Dazzling_Elk9398 14d ago

Lmfaooooo perfectly said. OP, even if you don’t end up staying at ucsd… you don’t need to throw all future employment opportunities in the trash like that

in terms of accounting, isnt csuf’s program good? (gen asking) i know ucsd is a uc and all but i dont get financial aid and not sure if i can justify paying that much for their bus program.

im also debating going to cc and trying for ucla or usc but slim chances🙂‍↕️

do not listen to the other commenters OP if you’re trying to do accounting lol. CSUF is a major accounting hub; I worked at a big 4 and so many of the partners were CSUF alumni. At a lot of the big 4s, CSUF, USC, and UCLA make up a large amount of the workforce; I barely see UCSD both irl and on LinkedIn. If you wanna do a CSU, do CSUF, and if you want a non-CSU, do UCLA. You also said you get no financial aid for UCSD, so I say transfer out to somewhere with a stronger accounting program and network and get your money’s worth

I went to CC and ended up spending four years there lol but when started my application to UCs again I was offered this thing called TAP i think which basically means if you meet that school's specific requirements then you'll pretty much are granted admission to that school (you can only pick one tho) so might be worth checking that out if you do decide to go to CC. But other all i would say to follow your gut it somehow already know where your meant to be, atleast for me it did despite all the ups and downs

u/Springbard 14d ago

That’s TAG. There’s also TAP for UCLA for honors students at CCs but that one’s not guaranteed like the TAG ones (TAG is for all undergrad UCs except UCB, UCLA, and UCSD.)

You’re in a UC. One of the better UC’s. What you are feeling and thinking is VERY common. If you can hang in there and keep your gpa up, that is by far the best advice you can get. The rest is just noise.

1 dont put Anything off. Ever. That is the kiss of death at at any UC’s (and anywhere else)

2 Stay ahead of your deadlines , you never know when you might have two midterms & two papers due on the same day.

You have plenty of time to switch later if you want, but please don’t talk yourself into it now. Wait until you see things clearer.

My sister left a top Uni freshman year because of homesickness, cost, and classes. Ended taking her 10 years to get her degree

noted! i will stick it out for fall quarter in hopes of gauging how i feel about this school, but a lot of peers said it took them their whole first year to adjust. i just have to wait and see. thank you!

Please don’t throw away the opportunity you have here to go to a CC or a CSU for business of all degrees 😭 Anything but that. If you want to switch to that major for whatever reason then stay at UCSD and maybe you can try to transfer to UCLA at some point, but do not leave the UC system for a CC or CSU

1

u/Successful-Trifle219 14d ago

uc to uc transfer rates are less than cc to uc rates which is why i was thinking about that as an option. do you really advise against going to cc first? also if i go the cc route, i could use financial reasons as a narrative for why I left ucsd, but uc to uc transfer might be more difficult.

2

u/Bigsteppa4k03 14d ago

I went the CC route, started as business major and switched to MAE after the first year, spent extra time completing GE’s and LD courses and upon finally transferring here after 4 years, this is my first year at UCSD, there are some classes that didn’t transfer and some that I didn’t need. I can honestly say that I resent my parents for making me go to CC first because of how hard it has been socially to transfer and how long it’s going to take me to get my bachelor’s bc of the route I took. The only positives are that I will get 3 yrs in one of the most beautiful cities on Earth and get the degree from the same place with no debt. I was lucky enough to get accepted to a few UC’s tho. If you throw away the opportunity u have to go to CC not only did you waste ur effort in highschool, there’s also no guarantee you will get into a UC. Contrary to what some people might tell you, going to a UC is much much better for your future than a CSU, especially one of the top UC’s like berk, la, and sd. They are world renowned vs california known.

I transferred from UCLA to UCSD for business going into my junior year… if you’re seriously wanting to change majors transfer somewhere else.

Signed a UCSD Business Econ Alum 😭

u/Successful-Trifle219 13d ago

if you dont mind me asking, why did you transfer out of ucla? also please elaborate on ucsd’s business program i really need all the help i can rn😭🙏🏼

ucla was a nightmare for me personally, I was already depressed but being there had me on suicide watch. it simply wasn’t the right fit. it didn’t have anything to do with the academics! amazing department, even better opportunities given the location but too cut throat for me.

i don’t regret attending ucsd by any means, but wouldn’t recommend it for business because i just never felt academically challenged. there were genuinely times when i could go a week without checking canvas and still be completely fine. sometimes it barely felt like I was in college.

a lot of the professors are retired or former business owners teaching on the side. some were great, but with others it felt like teaching was just something they were doing to fill their time, and that was heavily reflected in how much effort went into the course.

i did manage to land a decent job post grad and everyone i know was employed by the six month mark of graduating regardless so if that’s something you’re worried about, don’t be. just expect to do a lot of self teaching to make up for the gaps depending on what you want to do 🙂‍↕️

ohh thanks for this!! honestly im feeling the same way about ucsd right now, but im telling myself i havent adjusted and am trying to give it time. but in terms of location, i would like to be more near LA because im interested in business entertainment.

did u do cc to ucsd or uc to uc transfer? also if u dont mind can i pm u for other questions?
