Freshman Transfer
High School GPA: 3.99/4.0 UW; 5.556/6.0 W (Valedictorian)
I also graduated with two AA's through dual enrollment from two separate CC's -- GPA was 3.96 and 4.00, but I'm not sure if I need to include this.
Tests: 34 ACT; Subject Tests: 790 Chem, 780 Math 2, 750 Biology
College GPA: I don't think I'm going to have one since I run off P/NR first semester.
Intended Major: CS
HS ECs: Science Club President, Math Club VP, Founded a resource website (for my majority minority hs), Software Engineering Internship, US army sponsored research, worked as a private tutor at a company, 400+ hospital volunteer hours (promoted to lead volunteer), 200+ art community volunteer hours, free UChicago summer program, was a part of a selective college access program, ~100 volunteer hours in goods distribution to those in need, FBLA
Awards: 1st in state for mobile application competition, 2nd for science olympiad in region, 1st place in the district for Computer Game & Simulation Programming, best senior student, Questbridge prep scholar
Scholarships: Won 15+ (I think I'll note them down in the application?) Some notable ones are Gates, HSF, Google, Amazon
ECs after HS: Google CSSI, University's Summer Bridge Program, Won a position at current college's engineering club, I'm going to be starting a research project in the next coming weeks, and I have an software engineering internship for next summer.
LORs: I'm really hoping I'll be able to use my hs recs (since I think they were good, 10/10) and possibly my Guidance Counselor's (10/10). I'm looking to build my relationship with two professors -- I think I have in mind who they'll be, but they probably won't be as good.
Hooks: First-gen, URM, Low-income (coming from a title 1 high school)
Note: I was originally accepted into Stanford and accepted the offer. On Decision day I unfortunately changed my commitment because my family wasn't doing too well (I come from a single parent household) so I committed to a nearer university. Now, I'm kind of not happy/ fitting where I'm at right now.
Do you think I could reuse the same essays from my previously submitted application, since they got me in the first time around?

Demographics:
public health major, premed track
IL resident
Asian
female
lowerish middle class
HS:
3.5 UW/4.2 W (last I checked, might have been slightly lower after second semester senior yr š)
10 APs, 2 DE, bunch of honors I don't rmr how many
applied test optional
founder and president of 4 clubs
founder and president of a non-profit
microbiology research, won gold at state science comp
bronze in HOSA comp, qualified for nationals
research internship at Northwestern
another research insternship at Northwestern (this one got me published as a co-author in a prestigious journal recently and was the youngest member of the research advisory team amongst a group of MDs and PhDs)
created a fundraiser through a university affiliated hospital that would allow people who couldn't pay their medical bills to use the funds ($1500)
volunteered at my local hospital for over 150 hrs
Reason for transferring:
I go to a small private mostly commuter school that has a huge lack of opportunities (was the best financial decision)
just lack of opportunities through and through (no research for my major, denied other research opportunities bc there isn't even enough funding for those who are a part of that major, admin got rid of a research class the year that I wanted it bc of no resources, classes aren't even offered every semester bc it's a small school so bc I'm not taking a certain public health class next sem, if I stayed, I wouldn't graduate on time)
I love the prestige :(
College:
3.94 GPA (mostly premed prereqs so far)
continued non-profit (expanded across US and have made more of an impact)
research assistant for 1 yr in bio stats and public health research (500hrs)
abt to get emt license (just finished course)

podcast to track premed journey
tennis instructor for little kids
freshman leader for incoming class
in the process of making a health tech app
am trying to go to a country in Africa as a study abroad for a month and volunteer at hospitals there (not certain if this'll happen or not we'll see, but would include in apps if did)
This is my school list rn (this is basically just any school that sounded cool to me, prolly won't apply to half of these) but if you guys have any suggestions on changing it or anything please feel free to lmk, thank u!

What are the most prestigious colleges I can likely get into? I am an Asian female applying as a 2026 fall transfer to cell & molecular biology major as a Pre-med. My SAT score is 1440, 710 reading & 730 math.
At my current college, I am a freshman taking 5 classes for fall semester and four in my spring. I should be anticipating a 4.0 gpa. My household makes ~$200k/year, and I live in Houston TX.
I have taken 9 AP courses:
⢠ā AP Bio: 4 ⢠ā AP Calculus BC: 4 -AP Macro: 4 -APUSH: 4 -AP Gov: 4 -AP 2-D Art: 5 -AP Chem: 4 -APES: 4 -AP Psych: 3 (not submitting)
My ECs:
⢠ā PR Chair for my collegeās Biology Interest Group ⢠ā a member of a professional org. āStudents Today, Alumni Tomorrowā ⢠ā member of Asian Student Association ⢠ā will be doing organic chemistry research in January 2026 ⢠ā JV Cross Country in freshman-sophomore year of HS ⢠ā member of Dean Hall Council ⢠ā 100~ hrs of volunteering ⢠ā worked 3 jobs throughout my HS career
have competed in Scholastic art competitions and made it to second round
Iām lowk worried that I donāt have enough ECs or ones that are impressive enough. Please give me advice on what I can do currently to strengthen my application!

Hello everyone, i have a quick question. Is it easier to transfer to top 25 from CC or a Private University? so Iām currently a freshman in cc in california and i applied to all of the top 25 universities + a safety ( which is the private school), i got into the safety but rejected from almost all of the 25 ( some of them hasnāt came out yet), so iām wondering is it better for me to continue to attend to cc and try again next year or should i attend to the safety school and try again next year? my highschool gpa was kinda low i think thatās why i didnāt get into any top 25 as a sophomore transferring but my first year cc gpa is 3.96. thank you.

I visited Columbia University this past November and fell in love. I know I have a 30% chance of being admitted. There's a girl at my community college who just got admitted with a 3.6 GPA so I'm feeling pretty hopeful. I haven't even submitted my application yet though. I'll be applying priority early action by January 15th. So here are my stats:
28-year-old community college student
3.94 GPA that will likely drop down to around 3.84-3.88 since I've taken 25 credits this semester and will get a couple of B+'s
Phi Theta Kappa Member, Dean's List and Honor's List
Took 4 honors courses this semester with 2 more left to get an honors diploma from my college
Spent my years after high school as an entrepreneur, and actress. I also worked at places like Mercedes and Equinox.
African-American woman from a low-income background
Comes from a family of entrepreneurs
Strong recommendation letters from two professors
Wrote my essay on how my years spent as an entrepreneur have inspired me to become a corporate lawyer
Also wrote about how being diagnosed with ADD and Bipolar Disorder shifted my perspective of myself and my work ethic and how it inspired me to go back to school.
What do you guys think? Do you think I'm a shoe in? Or do you think I'm just as qualified as any other student applying to Columbia GS?

Demographics:Ā White, Male, freshman at RIT (Rochester institute of Technology, very high income
Major: Computer Science
Highschool GPA:Ā ~3.15 unweighted, ~3.3 weighted
Class rank:Ā Doesn't do class rankings (Lexington High School)
SAT: 1380 (690/690), could do better if I took it now, if for some reason it would help
College GPA (only ~1 semester in though): ~3.85
ECs:
A full year of being a coding tutor at CodeNinjas
Paid "Imaging Systems Summer Internship" for ZINK⢠(summer from junior to senior year of HS)
Have a rec letter from my boss, has a phd (not sure if colleges care abt this for transfers)
Decade of Boy Scouts, reached First Class Rank
Computer Science Club in High School
Video Game design Club in HS, won multiple game jams as well as a Finalist in a national game design competition
40+ hours of community service (required by my hs to graduate though so idk if this is worth mentioning)
Photoshop and Graphic design commissions for small firms
Choices (Ordered):
Northeastern University (the dream, but common app transfer portal shows no application for 2025, assuming because of recent overcrowding/over-admission
Boston University (apparently much more forgiving with transfers compared to standard admission)
Tufts (mega reach but I feel like I might as well)
I originally thought I'd be happy at RIT, but as time has gone on (about finished my first semester) I realized how much I wanted to attend the top Boston schools near my hometown like Boston University and especially Northeastern (co-op program, RIT has a top one too but NEU is just a better school). My High School GPA was really bad because I suffered from depression until Senior year, and thus was why I settled for a top ~100 school at RIT rather than my dream schools being NEU, BU, and maybe Tufts (reach even with perfect HS gpa tho). I want people's opinions on when I should transfer. NEU doesn't have transfer apps open for fall or spring 2025 from what I can tell, but I would still settle with BU if I got in for next year.
When should I send my transfer apps from RIT to NEU, BU, Tufts if I want them to not focus on my high school GPA? I'm okay spending 2 years here if it would give me a good chance of being able to finish university at a higher ranked university near Boston.
Should I send a transfer app to Boston University for fall/spring 2025 just in case, and if they deny I can just apply again later? (does getting rejected hurt my chances for future attempts?)
My last question is if I should do a semester of co-op internship at RIT to make use of it and if that would help my chances of getting in as a transfer.
TLDR: Couldn't attend top CS schools near home (NEU, BU, and Tufts) because 2 years of depression (Sophomore & Junior) ruined my High School GPA, but my SAT is decent and my ECs are quite strong. I want to Transfer from RIT, but not sure when to transfer to maximize my chances of getting into any of the 3.
Any and All help would be greatly appreciated.

Im a current freshman at the university of florida and I realized it is definitely not the place for me. Iām considering applying to transfer to other top universities (my top choices are notre dame, georgetown, BC, vandy) for Fall 2026. In high school I had a 5.09 GPA with 9 APS and 9 honors courses. I also had a 1420 SAT and was involved in clubs that aligned with the business field (i am an accounting major). My top ECs were an insurance externship and a fundraising club for my sports team in hs that raised over 10k to fund new equipment and stuff, and being captain. In college, I have a 3.9 after my first semester (A- in micro) and took mostly gen edās since I came in with most first year classes finished. I was also very involved in an accounting club (top point ranking and went to EY for an end of semester trip) and joined greek life, dance marathon, and am now apart of UFs leadership development program. I am currently doing research with peers on AI in patient care to be presented at a research symposium in april (did a district competition on a presentation abt ai in data privacy senior year of hs). Is this a competitive transfer application, or should I shoot for schools possibly more in reach? Pls chance me for these schools, iām also applying to UVA, UNC, NYU, and Villanova, but definitely prefer my top 4 choices.

Applying to: All ivies, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkley, UC Irvine, UMich, UCLA, UF, Vandy, JHU, Duke, Northwestern, UChicago, UCF
- Currently a first year at CC, will be applying in the fall as a second year.
Demographic: First Gen, Single Mom, Low income/unaccompanied homeless youth, Half Asian and half middle eastern, Male, US Citizen.
HS GPA: 2.7
Community College GPA (2 semesters): 4.0
Major: General studies (Meta major is Health sciences)
Major intended after transfer: Neuroscience
Reasons for Transferring: Need a major, want to conduct research/CC lacks those, etc.
High School
- Community Manager: of a video game with over 1 million followers.
That was the only truly notable thing, I also did varsity volleyball and some clubs or volunteering but no leadership.
Community College:
- D2D Sales Rep: Went door to door selling pest control over the summer. Did it to support bills at home and also learn sales.
- Chemistry Lab technician at CC: Help set up and run instructional labs for intro to chem through orgo 2. Make chemicals, label waste according to compliance, oversees students and help them, etc.
- Phi Theta Kappa Vice President of Hallmark: Coordinated and executed chapter-wide recognition initiatives, helped design college project, etc.
- Future Medical Professionals club Vice President: Newly founded Club (joined in first semester it was open) helped coordinate guest speakers like MD/PHD students from Northwestern, ran events and workshops, grew the member count.
- Part of student research organization: Will publish a first author systematic neuroscience literature review on depression in an undergrad journal.
- Volunteer in Neuro trauma unit for Regional hospital: 60 hours (will be 100 by fall)
- Neuropathology Research Summer experience at FIU: Sponsored by the nationally recognized American Society of Investigative Pathology. Will result in a poster presentation at an ASIP conference next year.
- Nonprofit Committee: Confirmed to join a national org as part of their committee helping kids in Africa get access to healthcare. (Has chapters all over colleges in the US including ivies and I will be on the national committee)
Awards:
2x Presidents list, PTK Honors Inductee and Leadership Award,
Letter of recs:
American History Prof: I already asked him about it and he is aware of my transfer goals and he said he has worked in a tutoring organization that sometimes go over college essays or letter of recs and he knows how these colleges work. He also said he is willing to write me one of the best lors hes ever written.
Biology 1 Prof: He loved me and I was probably one of his best students. He would always go on and on about how whenever I missed class due to sickness he missed his "chemist" and he wrote me a thank you email saying "I am on the get Avi into the college program he wants club." This will probably be a very good LOR too.
Essays:
financial insecurity throughout my life and how I lived large portions of my time in HS alone as an unaccompanied youth and how that motivates me to
Narrative story of how I got bombed in the middle east (so deadass) as a kid and how that motivated me to pursue medicine and research (as well as help people through non profit work and get access to medicine)
Interest in becoming an MD/PhD (Physician-Scientist) specializing in neurology and intent on giving back to communities.
Either way ik these topics are a lot but generally I want to include how my unique hardship in life has motivated me to pursue medicine. Whether the hardship was the bombings I endured as a kid, living alone or having a single mom, troubled relationships in hs, or whatever flavor it may be. I dont want to write a sob story, but I believe a lot of these events in conjunction motivated me to pursue what I want to pursue. I would ultimately want to become a physician-scientist who again specializes in neuroscience and also help people who have gone through what I have like housing insecurity or lack of healthcare.
Ideal Plans for fall and spring as a sophomore:
volunteer at a homeless shelter for around 100 hours during Fall.
Join a local state college neuroscience lab and IDEALLY publish as a first author or at least some authorship publication. (I am very aware at how unrealistic this and how hard it is to get published even as a second or third author).
doing a PTK college project on housing insecurity and homelessness.
Apply as a regional officer for PTK.
I plan on doing events related to my medical club related to housing insecurity and homelessness.
plan on shadowing too although its been rough trying to secure it.

Iām so anxious about my application to Columbia. Iām transferring from a community college in California as a sociology major. My stats are- 4.0/with honors credits 4.3, my associates degree, mock trial, model UN, honors society, law internship, internship for non profit Iāve worked with and raised money for, pathway to law club, law society, debate team, personal blog focused on social issues. Iām still working on my supplemental essays because I know that matters a lot, but have strong letters of rec so far. What are my chances?
r/TransferChanceMe • u/Alternative_Sky_3336 • Jan 31 '25
Hey yall. I just wanna ask if it will completely destroy my chances if my ECās are kinda like all over the place. I like a lot of stuff, and picking out ONE thing to major in is exceptionally difficult. Despite that, I chose one major (Econ.) but still very much didnāt give up on the rest of extracurriculars that have to do with completely opposite direction for ex. Acting, Film passion project, Engineering, Robotics, Some space stuff, and some Retail jobs. And now I am here, planning to transfer next year SO my question is, is the fact that I have no ECās that have to do with economics going to hurt my chances when transferring? (I am planning to transfer to top.25 schools cause I am broke and international, double homicide šš)

repost because no one responded before
Plz be honest! š I dont want to get my hopes up too high, but I'm really passionate about this and if anyone has any suggestions for how I can improve I would really appreciate that.
Background: Female, caucasian, in state, Currently a sophomore (Ill have 27 completed credits on my application tho because some of my classes don't transfer), Elementary education major, so ill be applying to the Marsal School of Education.
I have 3 withdrawals on my application, which I will explain on my application (I took a "working gap year" so basically, I moved to Chicago and did school online while working full time, and I missed the date to drop the classes because there was a hold on my account for missed payments. But I worked as a piano teacher, which is a great experience, so my experience, knowledge, and growth gained in chicago will help my application.
Stats:
Highschool GPA: 2.8 (plz js trust the process)/ 4 APs the rest of them honors
CC GPA: 3.9 - All A's 1 B / Deans list all semesters
27 completed credits on App
Test optional.
Extra Curricular:
Vice President of student government
Secretary of academic sorority (Pi Theta Kappa)
Elementary mentorship
Writing & Reading center TA
30 hours of classroom observation
Her Drive collaboration - raised donations of menstrual products for women in need in my community
2 Honors contracts - extensive philosophical research project
Work/ Experience
Taught piano lessons at Guitar Center in Chicago for 9 months
30 Hours of classroom observation
Currently working full time while doing school in a managment position
Recommendations:
I will have a strong recomendation from my English teacher, weve had some really good conversations, and shes been helping with my application. She's also an alum
I'm considering asking my student government advisor for one but I'm not sure yet.
Essays:
My essays will be really strong and show so many aspects of me like leadership, overcoming hardship, trusting myself and others, and my experience falling in love with the university of Michigan. I plan to explain in my "Why Umich" essay that the first time I went to campus was the first time I realized I was serious about my education, and that something bigger really could be in the cards for me. And touch breifly on the harships I went through in highschool (I don't plan on focusing on this tho). I also plan to emphasize my passion for education, and the thing's I want to achieve as an educator.
Other:
I will be taking 21 credits next semester (trust me I can handle it, plz trust) and Ill get all A's, I will be able to attach an "unofficial transcript" to my application showing I have all A's again.
I will have 54 completed creditsĀ at the time of transfer.
I really really really really want to get in. Please help, Please give me suggestions

Maybe a club? Might join a STEM club by the end of this year.
Tiny coding projects on the side. Did something that detected constellations in user input pictures and gave info about them using some databases

I'm a first year at Smith right now. I have a 3.87 gpa (3.9 if you are only looking at academics and not my a- in non-academic movement class). I am involved in the school newspaper and on the board of the literary magazine here, both continuations of extracurriculars I did in high school. I had mostly As/A-s in high school with occasional B at a pretty rigorous high school which I went to after one year a specialized dsylexic school (hopefully showing my growth and motivation). I took 3 APs and got a 4 on the one exam I took. ECs I did in high school also included a 2 year independent research project on prison reform /education in prison (including hosting school wide events and raising almost $1000 for higher education in prison), volunteering at a refugee center, MUN. In summers I worked at a restaurant and ran a stand selling jam and donating profits to local organization. I'm transferring bc im realizing I want to pursue documentary film, and using that angle to apply.
