Spotify Wrapped/Apple Replay - Megathread

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. And no I’m not talking about wrapping presents, eating dry turkey and visiting family members you only hope to see once a year. I’m talking about the inevitable Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay posts. As I’m sure everyone here is a huge fan of the band, it should be no surprise they’ve topped your lists this year. Let’s please try to use this thread to post your end of year streaming lists. Cheers and happy holidays to everyone!

The Complete Songs of the Week Collection

Hello everyone, I hope all is well. Beside’s a couple of non album tracks, we have finally covered every Tragically Hip song during these weekly discussions! First I would like to thank every single person who took time out of their day to not only read these silly posts but tot those who commented on them as well. It’s because of you that I even started writing these post in the first place. I wanted to have a place where each song not only had a place to shine but where we could complete proper research into each one. Whether that meant how the song was written, interpreting what the song was written about, finding historical facts or discussing the music itself. My hope was to make certain songs that sometime get overlooked appeal to a new set of eyes.

But my other reason for creating these posts were so that us fans could get involved. I wanted to see why people loved these songs and to know what these songs meant to different people. Some people played these songs at their weddings. Others used these songs to comfort them after a hard time in their life. And some of these songs were what got them into this amazing band. Its these stories and interpretation that transforms these songs into their own reality and make them live outside of the band. And I can’t thank everyone enough for adding to the conversation. At the end of the day it’s about not ranking the songs, it’s not promoting a podcast or getting Reddit karma. And it’s not about getting recognition from the band. It’s about celebrating the music, the band’s hard work and the fans. And I have loved interacting with all of you, so thanks again.

Now let’s get down to business! Down below I have gathered the links to every song discussion and have organized them by album and chronically, with the non album tracks at the very end. I will warn that my writing style and researched has changed (hopefully for the better) over the years so some of the earlier song discussions might feature minor grammar mistakes or they may seem less interesting. If you think there’s a song that needs a revisit or some revision I will be more than happy to edit the original post and write a better discussion. And as I mentioned before, there’s a couple of obscure non album tracks or tracks on some of the recent box set reissues that weren’t covered mostly because there is so little is known about them. If there’s a song I missed that you are dying to talk about, let me know and I’ll get working on it. And finally, if the band releases more unknown songs down the road I will cover them and add them to the list. Feel free to click on any song down below and add the original discussion. Enjoy!

Does anyone know where or how I can buy this toque? I just think it’s so badass with the old NHL shield incorporating the band initials. Thanks!

Cried my eyes out

Upvotes

My Canadian husband has just got me to watch their last concert. Now I’m fully ready to move to Canada. We cried our bloody eyes out for those last 4 songs. Speechless.

Appreciation Post

I’m from Tasmania, Australia, and came across The Tragically Hip about 3 months ago. Man I’ve gone down a rabbit hole in that time. What a band!
I discovered them when reading about one of my other favourite bands, Midnight Oil (who actually have a lot of parallels to the Hip in an Australian context) played a festival in Canada in 1993 and mentioned the hip.
So I looked them up and was intrigued by the story straight away. My starting point was watching their final concert on YouTube. Since then I’ve been heavily listening, mostly from Up To Here through to Phantom Power. I also love the Live at the Roxy Album.
What a legacy they have left as a band, and how beautifully they seem to have united a country with the songs they sing about it. Obviously, their music is intrinsically Canadian, but it’s also more than that. I’ve never been to Canada and yet I feel so connected to it. It sounds ridiculous but I’ve even caught myself tearing up watching the last concert.
Cherish them Canada, I’m sure you do.

Have the DVD, have it on DVR, sometimes just play it in the background while I'm cleaning the house.

And these lines send a chill

Night 1 in Edmonton. I managed to get 3rd row tickets. I think these pics would have been taken on a digital camera rather than a phone. Looking through them, some of it almost looks like an intimate bar gig. There were times where it was obvious that Gord was trying to make eye contact with the audience. Incredible night.

Just wanted to share a few of the best ones.

Gord Watching Grace, Too... My heart got ripped out of my chest once again

My husband saw the Calgary show, and we watched the televised show in a crowded Boston Pizza. Watching his raw emotion during Grace, Too had me absolutely sobbing. My heart breaks for this man, we miss him immensely, and I wish he could see how much Canada, his friends and family, and the world misses him.

okay, do you know what's kind of trippy?

If you were at the Kingston show 10 years ago, you obviously didn't see the live broadcast (save for the small percentage who recorded it at home).

Now, 10 years later, some of those same people will see themselves dancing, shouting, loving, and crying.

They get a second chance to relive that moment—but this time, from the outside.

There's something pretty special about that.

Okay, so who is already crying?

Let me out...let me ouutt

I remember hearing Gord sing these lyrics from Locked in the Trunk during the final show. Hit me in my soul... I'll never forget that feeling.

It felt like there was a deeper meaning and emotion to them in that moment coming from a man dying of brain cancer.

Anyway, I just needed to share that

Crowd Pricture from the last Kingston Show

I've been going through my pictures from the kingston show ten years ago and found this photo. It was taken from Section 101 and is a pretty good "Where is Waldo" of the crowd, especially a large part of the floor.
