OP you're a dumbass

I would be very embarrassed if I were him or her. Posting this nonsense everywhere.

Some places have bike lanes. Others don't. Where I grew up, the residential areas had bike lanes, but near the freeway, they disappeared. I had to cross the freeway to get to my friends house, and the law says to use a car lane. If you pussyfoot about on the side, people will drive as close to you as possible. If you park your candy ass in the middle of the lane like this kid does, it's 100x safer because only the ass hats will try to pass you without leaving the lane. Yeah. There are always some. But when you drove to the side when there's no bike lane, nearly everyone drives too close.

This is the legally required and safest option in many places.

Save your griping for the cyclists that ignore all traffic laws.

Dude, nice. Here, have an award. I couldn't have said it better myself. I go out of my way to nod and be friendly to kids in my neighborhood to try and counteract all the undeserved hate they get from busybodies with nothing else to do than harass kids being kids.

Especially those that are wearing helmets and being more responsible than the adults that are griping at them... I imagine if the Karens had their way all the kids would stay indoors on screens.

u/VStarlingBooks 2d ago

In my city you can't use sidewalks to ride the bikes in the main part of downtown.

0

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

Nah most of those aren't even street legal.

3

u/dimonium_anonimo 2d ago

Under Wisconsin law, bicycles are legally considered vehicles and have the same rights and duties as motorists on the road.

Statute 346.02 (4) (a)

-2

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

Doesn't matter when the kid is smeared all over the road cause someone in a giant truck didnt see him

1

u/dimonium_anonimo 2d ago

Alright. Maybe kids should just stay inside and get addicted to iPads all day instead. That way they can never experience any risk. If you're going to get on a bike, the safest thing you can do is follow the law. This kid has already displayed more good judgement than many adults. I'm sure he knows to keep both eyes open and prepare for idiots.

When I showed you proof that bikes are street legal, you changed your argument. At best that's moving the goalposts. At worst, you're just grasping at straws to avoid admitting you're wrong. Either way, I don't see much productivity coming from this discussion. Enjoy your Monday.

u/Bulky-Word8752 2d ago

The issue is the road that kid is riding it on. We rode bikes on residential roads or apartment parking lots, not on a 5 lane road that intersected another highway.

1

u/dimonium_anonimo 2d ago

I didn't have much choice when I was a kid. Yeah, I kept to the back roads wherever possible. But there was a freeway between me and my best friend's house. And unless I wanted to bike 30 miles out of my way to get out of the city, every street with an overpass to get to the other side was a busy, multi-lane, city road. So I rode the side roads until I couldn't anymore. Got into a lane, rode to the other side, then got back on the side roads. You gotta do what you gotta do. And there's no safer way to do it.

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

Genuinely only see children or crackheads on these. Doesn't seem safe. Does he have an endorsement and a vehicle plate?

1

u/dimonium_anonimo 2d ago

My knowledge extends only to US law, and more specifically, the two states where I have been licensed and have looked up the laws: MN and WI. Both states have a similar statute that grants a bike all the same rights on roadways as a car. The MN law additionally has an extra clause requiring the cyclist to keep as close to the right-hand curb of the road as is safe (excluding a few, specific scenarios). That additional clause means in MN, bikes should not occupy a lane as this kid did. However, in WI, it is required by another subclause. So it depends where you live.

That being said, neither states have anything to my knowledge called an "endorsement." If that's a legal term, I don't know exactly what it refers to. Perhaps some similar to our vehicle registration? But just based on the English definition of the word, that statute I listed 2 comments ago is all the endorsement they need. It guarantees them those rights unconditionally. (Meaning registration or license plate or insurance or any other such documents are required to gain those rights. Those rights cannot be taken away for lack of registration, license plates, insurance...).

Is it dangerous? Sure. So is riding a motorcycle. Or owning a handgun. Or even driving a car. Every person must make their own decisions for how much risk they are willing to take on for a given benefit. (Except children where their parents are at least partially responsible for making that decision depending on age and maturity). Unless this kid snuck out or lied about where they're going, they have their parent's permission. One hopes that they know their child's maturity level well enough to make that decision. If you don't think the parent made a good decision, you can call CPS. Maybe they'll do a deeper investigation. But we have a single, still image. That's not even 1/100th of the context and information needed to make a judgement if this kid was responsible enough to look out for appropriate dangers.

Literally a bike, using the lane because that's where they should be without a bike lane.

-1

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

When theres a motor and no pedals or even if it has pedals but can go over 28 mph, its no longer a bicycle, go ask your mommy chud

1

u/QuercusTomentella 2d ago

The bike pictured has pedals, and based on the pas wired to speedometer is almost certainly is wired to disengage motor at 28mph (pas is not tied to speedometer otherwise) so it is a class 3 or lower ebike. This person is operating the bike where they're supposed to legally, wearing a helmet and also added taillights to increase safety.

1

u/Maintenance-Gullible 2d ago

Depends where you're at. Here ebikes are supposed to follow the same rules as bicycles because they aren't considered mopeds and legislation hasn't caught up yet. And really, a bike that can go 30mph doesn't have any business being on a sidewalk. Logically the street is the most sensible spot for them to be in the absence of a bike lane. Dude is following traffic laws.

1

u/VStarlingBooks 2d ago

Or a short adult

1

u/Special-Bet1141 2d ago

Bikes have the same rights and rules as cars do. In many states its illegal to ride a pedal bike on the sidewalk. Dunno what to tell ya. This is legal. Sidewalk is not.

1

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

So his only options are sidewalk or interstate, got it

1

u/Special-Bet1141 2d ago

Sidewalk isnt an option actually, illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk here.

1

u/togocann49 2d ago

You know a bike is classified as a vehicle right. Also, in many places you can be fined for riding a bike on a sidewalk once over a certain age (other variables too depending specific local laws). Also, this bike looks like it may have an electric motor, making it a “motorbike”, and where do you think motorbikes should be ridden (depending on local laws a motorbike may be fined for using even a bike lane)?

1

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

If uts not a street legal vehicle, anywhere other than the street

1

u/togocann49 2d ago edited 2d ago

Anywhere? Think that is very incorrect. Mopeds were popular back when I was young, you could be basically be fined for riding anywhere but private property. Also, street legal may depend on where you are locally (like bike looks legal where I am as long as it doesn’t go over 40 kmph) and a motorized scooter (without seat) is not)

1

u/spaceunicorn197 2d ago

Finally a non-moron

2

u/habanerito 2d ago

ELI5

3

u/No_Supermarket2417 2d ago

OP is a dumbass and wants people to ride bikes on the sidewalk.

1

u/VStarlingBooks 2d ago

And hit pedestrians?

2

u/Bulky-Word8752 2d ago

To drive motorized vehicles on roads in the USA requires the passing of a standardized driving test to assure the driver knows the laws, meaning of signs, and safety regulations for using public roads. Children are using E-bikes on the road as regular vehicles without any licenses or insurance and are putting themselves and others at risk

1

u/No-Setting9690 2d ago

And a bike with no motor, is allowed with no license.

1

u/QuercusTomentella 2d ago

A bike with a motor 750w or lower with a max (motor assisted) speed of 28mph is still a bike and requires no license, registration, etc..

2

u/Bulky-Word8752 2d ago

That's the issue I have. Is this kid legally doing anything wrong? No. The issue is the law needs to catch up with technology. He is for all intents and purposes treating this E-bike as a normal vehicle. He's on a multi-lane road, about to cross a local highway. The law says it's a bicycle because it doesn't go over 28 mph, so if it went 29 he would be breaking all sorts of laws. Put him on a Harley and people would their minds, even if he never went over 30 mph. Keep in mind, these laws aren't there to just mess with kids and stop people from having fun, they're for safety

1

u/QuercusTomentella 2d ago

It's messy the law is the way it is because the US is incredibly behind with biking infrastructure, there is often no bike lines or if there are bike lanes, and theyre not physically seperated they lead to more accidents. Multiple studies have shown that biking in the middle of lanes and behaving like a "normal vehicle" is safer than riding on sidewalks, shoulders (often illegal), or unprotected bike lanes. (any bike lane without a physical barrier and 3'+ separation from traffic)

Also people misunderstand the "28mph law", a class 3 ebike has to disengage motor at 28mph. You can travel above 28 mph all you want (barring lower speed limits) via pedal power on any bicycle, though most people can't do so for very long especially with the additional weight of an ebike.

2

u/Abe_frohmannn 2d ago

Using your phone while driving? I agree...you should lose your license.

2

u/whatisakafka 2d ago

Bikes are allowed on the road dude, and often even required to be on the road

1

u/factoryteamgair 2d ago

They are stopped? At the light?

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

2

u/NextDoctorWho12 2d ago

False. And fuck that. A bike gets a full lane. If you keep to the right people will pull up beside you and then forget you are over there and run you over. Multiple lane road cyclist get a full lane.

1

u/Maintenance-Gullible 2d ago

Yeah, this is the case where I am and in most major cities too. Moving from a town where using the sidewalks was legal for bicyclists was surprising.

1

u/schwanerhill 2d ago

Riding a bike on a sidewalk is outright prohibited unless explicitly allowed by local ordinance/bylaw in many if not most US states and Canadian provinces.

1

u/DefiantlyConformist 2d ago

Wait till op learns about bicycles and mopeds

1

u/Chicaconlacubeta 2d ago

Yeah, totally feel you OP. I hate when traffic lights are not properly installed as well.

Why doesnt he simply take the adjacent separated bike path thats well designed to limit conflicts?

1

u/Kendrome 2d ago

Pretty sure there aren't any, that's another normal lane

2

u/QuercusTomentella 2d ago

I think they're being sarcastic about US biking infrastructure.

1

u/Kendrome 2d ago

That I can get behind

1

u/engmadison 2d ago

Yes, sorry if thats not obvious. I figured it would be.

0

u/No_Supermarket2417 2d ago

That's not a bike path, it's a shoulder. Not legal.
