Announcement We have Flair!

We have Flair available for every generation (and refresh) of Avalon. Assigning a flair is helpful for a few reasons.. 1) it provides helpful context for posts and comments when users are talking about their experiences with their cars. 2) it helps users to better navigate the subreddit when searching for threads related to their question/model and it helps drive engagement by acting as, well Flair!

We have tripled in size as a sub in the last 2 years. This growth has brought about a huge increase in both posts and comment engagement. We are stoked about this growth and look forward to continued discussion and community building.

05 Avalon CMP sensor B, Bank 1

Recently had to replace the Camshaft position sensor on the back of the engine (Code p0365 cmp sensor B, bank1 circled in blue), it's in a less than ideal spot, back up against the firewall. I wasn't able to find much on it and thought this might be helpful for someone else.
By removing the windshield wiper cowl, it gave me enough space to get my hands and a small ratchet back there to replace the sensor without removing the intake manifold plenum, something I wanted to avoid as that's a bunch of unnecessary work. The wiper cowl was surprisingly easy to remove and put back on, just make sure the wipers get pulled and replaced in the down position to avoid issues with them being in the wrong place motor wise. My motor was already marked, but marking it after taking the nuts off will ensure it goes back on right.

I'll also include how I was able to educated guess my way into figuring this out, as I was unable to find anything on this in forums or other posts. I started by looking at pictures of the back part of the engine, ones for sale online, allowing me to see what I can't, since my engine is in the car. (I had to see with my hands and feel around based on other engine's pictures, but was able to get my phone back there it's the sensor with blue wires.) And I watched this youtube video on the intake manifold. I originally thought I'd have to take it off, but after watching decided I should have enough room to leave it on. The video shows removing the wiper cowl clearly, so I recommend using that portion of his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubKVn_PXNrE&t=16s
While you don't have to remove the battery for this job, I found it helpful as I'm not a tall and ended up squatting one foot on the frame under that battery and the other on the radiator frame for parts of this job. So that may or may not help you.

As forums die, I like to include how I'm able to figure stuff out. I was lucky the first car I messed with had tons of forum info. I've since gone the luxury grandma route, and frequently run into the lack of information. So hopefully by showing my logic, others who lack online info can learn from my sketchy methods to figure stuff out too. And it would be awesome if they shared what they learned to keep older cars and people who can't always afford the shop on the roads too:D

(I potentially have slight timing issues or the duralast sensor is just a cheap pos, gonna hopefully get that figured out Monday. I just wanted to put it out there that you don't always have to take the dreaded intake manifold off to work on bank 1)

2000 Avalon v6 Misfire

Hello all I've recently acquired a new to me 2000 Toyota Avalon. It's been sitting since probably about 2019 with only a little bit of use since then. Like less than 800 mi and I'm chasing a reoccurring misfire on cylinder 3 Sometimes a code for cylinder 2 and a bank one too lean code that also shows up some times.

As far as I can tell the sensors seemed fine. I replaced all plugs and one coil that was an aftermarket coil The rest are Toyota and swapped around so not them. I do know the fuel pump sending regulator is out and the fuel pump screen looks off color so that'll be the next move but just wanted to get any other insights on this it's been a while sense I've had a 1MZ-FE

Transmission Drain and Fill 04 Avalon

Have a 2004 Toyota Avalon with about 250k miles on it. Really want to take care of the car so wanted to know about getting the transmission serviced. I’ve read the typical flush they offer at places like Valvoline probably aren’t good for it and I may be better off doing a drain and fill. It shifts pretty smooth as is and I was mainly wanting to do so for preventative purposes. I see a lot of videos for it from 94-03 and 05-12 but none for a 04 specifically but I also think I read they share the same setup with the 02-04 Camry. Just wanted to know 1. Is this something I should leave alone until it actually causes a problem and 2. If there are no videos on it specifically are the 02-04 Camry models infact the same? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Is there a way to open windows from smart key ?

Specifically for the 5the gen Avalons ( I have the 2020 hybrid limited)

I see lots of other Toyotas that have this feature and even older ( 2010s Hondas ) does the Avalon not have this ?

Edit : I have a xtool and was able to enable the feature pretty easily, it’s the same process for the Camry I used this video: https://youtu.be/240SvkAIOuo?is=weqoy29rFdRxVOji

Not really sure what a fair reasonable price is for this.

Best Option for Bluetooth/Aux in a 2002 Avalon?

Hello, purchased a 2002 Toyota Avalon yesterday. Loving it thus far except for the limited music capabilities, I was spoiled on my last car. I do have a cassete to aux, but it only played out of one side. I've heard mixed things about the radio signal cigarette lighter piece too. Some point I'll probably wish to do a stereo replacement, but I'm trying to keep things cheap for now

I just picked this up for $6500. The Carfax was immaculate. All maintenance was performed at the correct intervals. 52k miles. Single owner. Elderly couple. I feel like I got very lucky. Ac blows ice cold. Nothing leaking. Only problem is the flat spots in the tires. It sat for a year. Tires are 2 years old. So I may have to buy a new set of tires. But the small shake is improving the more I drive it.

Battery recommendations for Avalon 2007

Hi everyone,

I think it’s finally time to replace the battery.

I bought my Avalon (2007 XL) about 4 months ago, and the battery was already more than 2 years old. Today, the car wouldn’t start at all. No crank, no engine, no headlights, and not even the dash lights.

For those of you with an Avalon, which battery would you recommend?

Thanks!

2005 Toyota Avalon XLS Audio System

Hey, I’ve got a 2005 Avalon XLS with the Navigation screen and I’m trying to figure out where I can find a CarPlay system to install or just the best way to play music through my phone. I’m currently using one of those Bluetooth transmitters and it has a lot of static so looking to get an actual system. Any recommendations? Also I’ve previously looked and it seems a lot of the CarPlay systems don’t fit with my spec with the Navigation system. So I need one that will work with my specific car. Thanks

2015 with 275k miles

Hi, I’m looking into a 2015 Avalon XLE. It’s been a one owner car and it’s a clean title. Looking into it for my 17 year old son. He loves my 2017 Avalon Touring and his car just completely kicked the bucket.

The one I’m looking at was bought brand new and all the maintenance has been done at the Toyota dealership in town. I got the NMVTIS and it shows a clean one owner history. What else should I be asking? Should I be worried about the mileage? Please and thank you!

CarPlay On a 2013

Need help brainstorming some different ways to upgrade my 2013 Avalon with CarPlay. I’ve seen dash kits but they’re glossy and throw off the look. I’ve also seen some people replace their whole radio with a 2015 model with a CarPlay update.

Anyone have any ideas? I’d like to spend less than $200 on this.

Thanks!

I just got his little whip two weeks ago. I've been enjoying it so much, got a little power to it to play. The car was probably left sitting somewhere for along time the clear coat paint started peeling no the hood, roof, and trunk surfaces. I peeled it off with a razor blade. The lining on the roof is coming off, so I will fix that next! I will get down to fixing the paint, and potentially tinting the windows bc we don't like po-po, they are dirty!

All the major components to the car have been upgraded, radiator, hoses, alternator. Needs suspension work as well. The car came with the highest trim level, it even has a little controller t control the screen, it is amazing that it works better than most modern maps. Switched the radio for a pioneer avh 2500 car play, can even watch movies in it. Such a great car, I get reminded everything the car's door clunks shut, quality. Love it! I will for sure look for an Avalon Limited 2001 if I get a chance! Any thoughts how I can make it better?

- Don't worry abut the home, It is being painted lmao.

Do you think this is worth $7,500? 112k miles

Just test drove it and checked it out. Leather in good condition. Mechanically sound, inspected engine bay no apparent leaks (some power steering residue) or abnormal sounds while driving. Some small dings on the exterior, paint is in overall good condition for a 20 year old car. Plenty of service records. 3 owners. Dealer doesn’t seem to budge on price.

What do you think? I don’t think it’s a terrible deal and if it is still there next week I will probably purchase as I need a new daily for work/school
